Holden, one of my favorites, made so many good films, Westerns and otherwise. Streets of Laredo and Alvarez Kelly are fun but his performance in The Wild Bunch, with a unbelievable cast, is top notch. The Horse Soldiers remains a film I will watch just about any time. Later in life, he said he regretted spending his life on something as frivolous as acting, ended up running a safari ranch in Africa in his last years as I understand it.
@@famouspeople63The ending is the same for every human being.Which is sad depends on your perspective. Is it better when. it comes after long sufferings or after lived last years indecrepitude? At least Holden passed away reading scripts he was planning to film and about to travel to Africa to marry his longtime friend Pat Sttauffer.
There are three actors who never did a Western I disliked. Gary Cooper, Alan Ladd and William Holden. Obviously The Wild Bunch is on a short list of the best westerns ever made. But Escape From Fort Bravo is in my personal Top 10 list.
Regarding The Wild Bunch, at the time it was released, movie reviewers, except for a young journalist from Chicago, hated it. The exception, Roger Ebert, got it right, calling the film ‘a masterpiece.’
My mom used to tell me she'd never have married my dad if he hadn't looked so much like William Holden --- why is it then I've turned out resembling Elmer Fudd?
Much as I love it as one of my favourite films I still regret that Lee Marvin turned down the Wild Bunch reportedly because he'd just done the Professionals

Strange how Horse Soldiers didn't do well?
@@famouspeople63As Holden's character in SOB says it's impossible to predict if a film will be successful or not.

Interesting vid. Left out “Arizona” 1940, with Jean Arthur.
Thanks

The film became bigger than any individual involved in it's making
