A rugby "try" is when you ground the ball over your opponent's line, and it's called that because doing so gave you the chance to TRY a kick at goal. For this reason, a try wasn't worth any points originally, and you only scored points if the subsequent kick at goal was successful. The kick at goal is called a "conversion", because it was how you CONVERTED your try into points. Nowadays, a Rugby Union try is worth 5 points, with or without the conversion, and you get an extra 2 points if the conversion is successful.

6:10 and also 11:16 That, ladies, is the late great Jonah Lomu. He is the Tom Brady of Rugby, if Tom Brady's superpower was running through/over people, stepping them (you would call it juking) and plain having higher acceleration and top speed. Taken too soon through illness, this man is in Rugby heaven. Watch some Jonah Lomu videos (he was a walking highlight reel), you will enjoy them.

The All Blacks no 11 you were asking about is Jonah Lomu, one of the all time rugby greats. When he first came on the scene, nobody knew how to deal with him, because he was 6 ft 5,and incredibly fast and strong. He was only 19 when he played in the 1995 World Cup.Unfortunately,he suffered with a rare kidney disease, and had to retire from rugby in 2007,and sadly he passed away in November 2015 from a heart attack brought on by his kidney problem. He was only 40 .An absolute legend as a player, and also as a human being. You should react to a video about him.

The best thing about rugby and the thing people miss on compilation videos over watching a full game is just how much effort goes in….the constant 40 minute half’s of running up and down,, the same players running back and making tackles then having the ball bursting forward being tackled, love watching international rugby things like the six nations or World Cup

17:00 That was a huge moment….Japan, a comparative minnow in rugby, had been giving South Africa, who are one of the top teams historically, really hard game. They had been in front and SA dragged themselves back and at the 80minute mark were 32-29 up and it looked like a huge upset have been avoided. Then Japan got the ball and played some of the hardest 3-4mins of rugby you will see resulting in this. It was a massive thing at a World Cup, their first win at a World Cup since 91 and announced Japans step up from the minnow category. In Rugby you have to pass it backwards even accidentally knocking it forward is illegal with your hands so they kick it forward but the receiver has to be behind whether it's passed backward or kicked forward when it last touched by the passer, they go on there chest as you have to literally touch it on the floor for it to be a try, after a try worth 5 points they kick it over the posts for a further 2 points called a conversion which is taken on the line up the pitch from where you touch down not always in the middle and for a penalty(Foul) which is too complicated too explain you get 3 when you kick it over. 2 halfs of 40 mins each stopped on the tv screen unlike football(soccer) for referee disciplinary reasons Etc but not all stop start like American Football, when the clock reaches 40 and 80 mins though it's one more play after that unless deliberate foul then you get another I think. That's why you see them kick it out at the end of the game sometimes if they are winning to end the game. Hope you understand that. Ps the Lions in red are a touring team every four years they play New Zealand, Australia or South Africa so each team every 12 years and there full name is The British and Irish Lions.

    Hey Ladies
Natasha to answer your question. The goal posts are there for 3 reasons. You get the chance after scoring to add extra points by kicking the ball through the posts and above the bar in the same way you do in NFL. That gets you 2 extra points in Rugby Union. You can kick a penalty if the ref says your player has been fouled. That's 3 points. And lastly at anytime during the match you can kick the ball through the opposition's post and get 1 point.
Just to be clear and confuse you guys further there are 2 versions of Rugby. This video is Rugby Union. This is mainly a Southern England game and international with Australia, New Zealand, South Africa as well as a number of European nations.
Rugby League is a Northern England and some international countries game. It is more akin to NFL in that you have 6 tackles to try and score before handing the ball over to your opponent.

    • @norom4544
      @norom4544 2 роки тому +6

In Rugby Union there is no 1 point kick. A drop goal (dropping the ball in front of you and kicking it on the bounce over the posts) is worth 3 points.

A quick rundown of the "International" colours...
New Zealand --- All Black ( Thus the name "All Blacks")
South Africa -- Dark Green Jerseys with gold trimmings and numbers, white shorts
Australia -- Gold Jerseys, Dark green shorts
Japan -- Red-and-white hooped jerseys, white shorts
England -- White jerseys, white shorts (maybe they should be called the "All Whites"??)
Scotland -- Navy blue jerseys white shorts
Ireland -- Green Jerseys (lighter than South Africa), white shorts
Wales -- Red jerseys, black shorts
British Lions (a combination of the 4 Home unions, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales) -- Red jerseys (representing Wales), white shorts (representing England), navy-blue (main body) socks (representing Scotland), green sock-tops (representing Ireland)
Argentina -- Light-blue and white broad-hooped jerseys, white shorts
France -- Blue Jerseys, white shorts.
A quick "aside" regarding colours... I think it was an "unwritten convention" that, if a team used "stripes", the rugby team jerseys would carry horizontal stripes (hoops), and the soccer team jerseys would carry vertical stripes (Argentina being a case in point)....

In a lot of countries where it's played we just absorb it from an early age so we don't get that lightbulb moment where we suddenly realise how good it is. Having scored a try (originally to get a ‘try at goal’) for 5 points you get a chance to kick a goal through the posts for 2 extra points, if awarded a penalty you can opt to try and kick through the posts for 3 points, the final way of scoring through the posts is a ‘drop goal’ which is where you kick the ball in open play (must be dropped from the hands and the ball must touch the ground before you kick it) for 3 points.
As for the throwing the ball, in rugby the ball must go backwards (if it goes forwards it’s a ‘forward pass’ or a ‘knock-on’).

The shirt numbers in Rugby denote playing position in the team. So #1, #2 and #3 are the 'front-row' forwards are the rally strong, powerful guys in a scrum (you'll get that later). #4 and #5 are the taller 'second-row' forwards who are dominant in the 'line-outs' (you'll get that later as well). #6, #7 and #8 are the back-row forwards; they usually cover more ground than any other players in a game; I'm not sure of the NFL equivalent, but they are strong, with some pace and aggressive, destructive tacklers to shut down opposition moves.
Then you come to #9 and #10; these are the 'half backs (9= scrum-half, 10=fly-half) they are lighter, faster, and creative play makers who link the forwards to the backs.
Then you have the centres (full name; centre three-quarters); #12 and #13; fast, powerful runners who are vital in defence and attack depending on field position and match situation (this is where I used to play). Then we move to #11 and 14# these are the left and right wings, the greyhounds of the team; fast, skilful, good hands, tactical kickers, and good tacklers in defence; they generally score more tries than anyone else.
Finally you have #15, the full back; the last line of defence but someone who can become an extra attacker as well; needs great hands for catching the ball, pace, bravery under pressure, and really good kicking from hand.

Great reaction ladies.Rugby players enjoy watching Grid Iron too especially with all the gear they have to carry and still run very fast and their tackling is just insane. Some of those guys are huge.Yes rugby players wear some protective gear such as padded head gear to lessen the risk of concussion and shoulder pads, mouth guards etc. However the protection is too a minimum as not to be an advantage during game play but still enables some protection. Womens rugby is great and womens 7s rugby.USA are doing quite well in mens and womens 7s rugby.American rugby players were/are lethal tacklers and are great to watch.Yes belly diving is just for better security of the ball when scoring a try. This prevents possible knocking forward or dropping the ball when placing on the ground when scoring. When you do drop the ball etc its embarassing and try is disallowed.Watch Rugby Haka which are a ritual in Rugby NZ prior to playing e.g .Best Allblack Haka.Watch We belong by beats dre and this gives you an incite into what haka is about. I haven't seen all comments yet, the "hats" are scrum caps, worn by the players who make up the "scrum". In scrums clashes of heads happen, ears get knocked and the caps offer a little protect to clashes and reduce the risk of "cauliflower ears". Not all wear them, some go for headbands or tape to hold the ears.
A try is when the ball is "touched down to the ground with positive pressure" over the line in what you would call the "end zone".
Also, look at some of the videos of rugby referees (notably Nigel Owen, but there are other great refs now he has retired) and the level of respect they get from the players.
I'm sure others will recommend great players it's worth checking out from all teams.
Do check some of the womens games, maybe not quite as bulky, but don't think they play soft, they play with as much passion and skill and dedication.
The sport is growing, in recent times the Japanese have come on in leaps and bound and are now well respected, the US team is doing well.
A game of 2 halves (as someone once said, but they were I think talking of football (soccer) but true of rugby). Two halves of 40 minutes of near continuous play, of running, physical contact, of giving their all. And at the end, the to sides applaude each other off the pitch and probably end up in a pub or bar having drinks. Respect is a core value of true players and officials.

The goals are used for drop goals - ie running towards post you can kick it over the bar and between the sticks. Secondly after every try you get a conversion attempt for additional points. Scoring is different in Rugby League. There are also penalty kicks over the bar for points.

The word 'try' is a hangup from many years ago when grounding the ball over the try line gave you the chance (a try) to kick a goal, but didn't itself score any points. Nowadays a try scores 5 points, the kick at goal following a try (a conversion) scores 2 points. A penalty kick (following a infringement) scores 3 points, and a drop goal (where the ball is bounced on the ground and the player kicks it on the rebound) also scores 3 points.
To score a try the ball must be grounded with 'controlled downward force'. It's no good just crossing over the line like in American football. The conversion has to be taken from a point 90 degrees from where the ball was grounded, so if you score in the corner, it's a much harder conversion kick than if you score under the posts.
When you saw the player being lifted into the air by his team mates that was a lineout, which is given if the ball goes out of play on the sidelines (called into touch).

I think you would love a full game, but a warning to Natasha - there aren't many breaks in play, it's pretty much full on for the whole game time. Also there are 2 unusual restart methods. The line out ( the one you saw with the players being lifted) and the scrum, where they both teams huddle together. There are also 2 mixed teams. The international British and Irish Lions, and the Barbarians, who I like for 2 reasons. Their nickname is the Baa- Baas, and although the Jersey is black and white hoops, they all wear their own club socks! And scrum caps are to keep their ears pretty! 😉😁

A few answers (did quickly check through the comments first) from an American Football fan and former Rugby player in the UK 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
Australian Rules is a different sport, there’s also another form of Rugby called Rugby League which plays quite differently - it’s also another sport but still closely related.
Things to remember is that in Rugby you can only pass backwards (there’s no Quarterback although the Fly Half has a similar role in some ways - no 10 jersey - all players in a position wear a specific jersey unlike Football)
You have to put the ball down with pressure to score, you can’t just break the plane with the ball
And for conversion kicks (PAT) they are always taken in line with where the Try (touchdown) was scored, that’s why you see them run behind the goal posts if they can to get a direct kick afterwards
The cloth helmets are scrum caps, mostly to protect the ears in the scrum - players are divided into two categories (there’s some remnants of this left in Football), Forwards and Backs and generally the Forwards are the bigger, stronger guys that play in the Scrum (contesting the ball) and Backs are smaller, faster guys that will often be scoring the tries - this is not always the case though but broadly speaking. I was a Winger (so a Back) from the age of 11. Left Wing is number 11 on the jersey, Right Wing is 14. I played both. It’s roughly equivalent to a Wide Receiver although that’s not necessarily a helpful comparison
Oh and another thing to mention,
there is no separate offence, defence or special teams - just one team of 15 with a maximum of 8 substitutions (some competition rules allow fewer) and these are permanent, when a player is substituted out they won’t play for the rest of the entire game

Love your reactions to this, it's great to see someone fall in love with Rugby! A few notes for you, a "try" in rugby is synonymous with "touchdown", so greatest try's is greatest scores basically. Second, the reason that most of them dive when they score is because you have to touch the ball down over the try line. This used to be the case in early American Football as well (hence it was called a "touch" "down") but rugby kept the rule where you have to touch the ball to the turf and have downward force for it to count. I'm an American and love watching the Eagles when I can, but I lived in New Zealand and definitely endorse the All Blacks as my second home team!

The goal posts are used for conversion after a try. The try is worth 5 points ,a converted try is worth 7 points meaning a conversion is 2 points. They can be used for penalties on fouls as well which are worth 3 points. Whatever they have on their heads is a head gear and its used to cushion their heads or protect ears from friction during scrums. Scrums are when the 8 forwards from either side come together to contest the ball after a knock on or a forward pass. A knock on is when you fumble and drop the ball infront of you and as you know the ball can only travel backwards unless its a kicked ball. They lift each other during line outs which happen when a ball is kicked into touch. Here the forwards again from both teams come together again to contest for the ball and the act of lifting a jumper up is called hoisting. And yes the forwards are the engine of the team mostly doing the set pieces and the backs are tasked with most of the plays, number 1 to 8 are the forwards then 9 to 15 the backs. As rough as it looks, the sport has so many laws/ rules (21) and for you to watch a full game and enjoy all of it youll need to know the rules otherwise youll just be anxious waiting for the part you understand whats going on.

The reason why most players dive in for a try is because the player must have control of the ball when he places it in the try zone. There is too much chance chance of an opposition player spoiling a try if it is placed down by a player when under pressure.

the history of the sport is pretty interesting and the sheer scale of it is also fairly immense, as i said in my live chat comment i would strongly recommend you watch videos and content surrounding Rugby League, as it's the 'easier' version of Rugby, it's also got a lot in common with American football and as such you might understand it easier than trying to jump into the Rugby Union rabbit hole which is a lot more complex and involved.
i used to play Rugby (union) before injury forced me to quit (used to play scrum half), it was an amazing time and honestly it's a true gentleman's sport.
to answer a few points you brought up:
the famous #11 from New Zealand was the late Jonah Lomu, widely regarded as the best Rugby player of all time.
the head equipment worn is a 'scrum cap' used to protect the ears of players involved in scrummages and to help prevent 'cauliflower ear', it's not a mandatory piece of equipment but most players who are involved in the scrum tend to wear them now, and with more medical research being done into head injury and the lasting effects of head trauma in sport certain things are becoming more and more common in terms of safety, so while currently it's an optional piece of gear you can wear i wouldn't be surprised if in a few years time it becomes a mandatory thing for all players to wear.

The full name of the game includes the words "Union" (the Code 15 a side, etc...), "Rugby" ( the place (a school) the code was invented) and "Football". Kicking is the way to move the ball forward other than carrying it. It remains football as the ball can be kicked at any time, more likely when handling conditions are adverse (rain or snow) or when sides are mismatched ( most Rugby is an Amateur Game,is not on TV).
Drop Kicks (ball touches ground before kick) start the game, restart after conversion or when the ball crosses Dead ball line (end of pitch)as a 22m drop. It can be used to score a goal in play (like a Field Goal).
Formal Place Kicks ( ball on the ground) are taken for attempts at goal for a penalty or Conversion of a try, these kicks are taken from where the offence happened ( any dissent adds 10m)or in line with where the Try was touched down ( hence the reason to run between the posts).
The ball can be kicked along the ground like Association Football or be kicked forward and caught again by the kicker (or another player who was behind the line of the kicker when kicked). The ball can also be kicked out of play " kicked into touch" off the side of the pitch.

To answer your question about the goalposts. When a try is scored (a try is the equivalent to a touchdown but a try isn't scored until the ball touches the ground in the goal area) the kicker attempts a kick for another 2 points in much the same way in football except that the kick is from a kicking tee directly in line from where the ball was put down.

To address some of your questions.
The 'try' is scored when a players places the ball on the ground in what you call an End Zone. They must place downward pressure on the ball and must have control of the ball. That scores 5 points. To answer a later question, the goal posts are used for penalty kicks and after a try is scored. It's not shown in the videos you watched but a player must place kick the ball from the ground over the cross bar and between the upright posts to score extra points.
The All Blacks player with the number 11 you kept asking about is Jonah Lomu. He is the biggest star the sport has ever had. He was a giant of a man, fast and powerful.
SOme of the players you asked abotu are wearing head gear, a tiny amount of padding over their head. It has no relevance to position, skill or role. It is just a personal choice of the player.
The green team near the end, green shirts, white shorts was Ireland.
The 'Lions' team you asked about is the British and Irish Lions. Every four years a special team is made up of the top players from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. They call them the Lions. They then tour either Australia, New Zealand or South Africa and play a series against one of those teams. It's a big deal because those three south hemisphere teams only get to play the Lions once every 12 years!

No. 11 For the All Blacks is Jonah Lomu probably the GOAT in that position. As you would have read in other comments he had a rare kidney disease that eventually brought on a heart attack and his untimely death. Such a beautiful human being inside and out. Sorely missed.

The try scored by the "Gas man" (Takudzwa Ngwenya) at 12:00 was for the USA against South Africa in the World Cup. The player he scorched past was Bryan Habana, regarded as one of the quickest wings in World rugby. Despite the great try the USA went on to lose 64-15.

My late husband played rugby union for 25 years (from the age of 15) as a front row prop (either number 1 or 2) and was very proud he never ended up with ‘cauliflower ears’ and used to tell me stories about the ‘dark arts’ lol
