- Weapons Load Crew from the 34th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron Unit arm a B-1B Lancer bomber with GBU-31 munitions (JDAMS) before taking-off on a combat mission at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, on September 8, 2018. GBU-31 is a 2000 lb version of the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) which can be launched from approximately 15 miles from a target and each is independently guided.

I was a weapons loading crew member in the USAF from 1963-67. Boy, how times, aircraft and munitions have changed since then. I enjoyed it but not enough to make a career of it. I loaded B-58's in SAC, B-57's in Vietnam and F-4's in Arizona. The only "high tech" weapons I loaded back then were all nuclear. A salute to all my brothers and sisters carrying on this work now. The obvious question- why not simply have a swappable pre-loaded rotary carousel?
Too heavy. Imagine at least 6 bombs each weighs in at almost 1 metric ton, along with the carrier they are attached to. Not to mention they don't always need to equip the same ordnance in the bay.

usually 10mm is missing along with the 1/2 and 9/16. and the short extension
usually have a shitload of oddballs that never get used like 9/32 or 9mm

how long does it takes to re-arm a B-1B? 24 1000kg JDAM on full bomb load could takes a few hours ?
i imagine you'd have multiple trollies going at one time if it was required to turn around the aircraft fast

@@ikepaul4536 No weapons are designed to withstand such a accidents some of them (not all) are designed in a way that they arm only when some signal is sent, they are dropped from the plane and so on - in some cases even if the fuse goes off unless the weapon was properly armed it cannot set it off. No-one wants to destroy utterly expensive plane its crew and ground crew (bot also extremely valuable) and set of the expensive ordnance just because i.e. mounting point fails.
But when facing officer in charge afterwards I bet they would pray that it could explode ... he/she is not going to shake their hands with pride :-)
If it drops then we follow an emergency vaccination procedure, based on what type of munition it is there is a time frame before anything happens.
