If I were her I would have been totally unapologetic. She had nothing to be sorry for, it was a good song and wasn't offensive to normal gays like myself, it was the tumblr snowflakes that tried to make it offensive and that's not fair on Billie.
I'm gay and while this doesn't offend me, I find the concept pretty lame and its not surprising it got some peoples backs up. If would be very surprised if they didn't see this criticism coming. May have even been seeking the press for it who knows - gives Billie the opportunity to speak out and look like a good guy (I think she's fine btw). Just my cynical two cents
from what i've seen people mostly don't like the "i use your orientation to make myself feel better, because you being gay would mean i'm not the one who's unattractive, all girls are" and i wouldn't say that's necessarily offensive, but i get why ppl are mad about it
I don't know what happened but there you go, people. She has explained the meaning of her song and there is nothing offensive about it. As long as everyone's okay.
What I got from the song was that when someone gets rejected by their crush they don’t want to be rejected because of something like “their looks” or “their personality” but it would feel a bit more comforting to be told “I don’t want to be with you because I’m gay” and you know it’s not something they can’t control.
Ngl would have been a better song (and better received) if that's what it was. The feedback Little Miss Perfect-a song somewhat along those lines-got was great.
While I never really cared much, I still understand why people got upset with the song. What I don’t understand, however, is everyone in this comments section (as well as others) insulting people who got offended with the song. You say that they’re “too sensitive” and “so dumb” yet, the minute someone even minorly critiques Billie, you’re all up in arms. Smh
thanks! ngl i don't really like this song 'cause it does feel like "i wish you were gay 'cause that would mean i'm not the one who's unattractive, it means all girls are" just using someone's orientation to make yourself feel better and that's just...yikes on the other hand i see how she didn't mean it too seriously and i'm pretty sure she sees that it's a bit problematic, nothing against her
I've heard her songs plenty of times but never listen to them on my own accord except for this song and I love it so damn much because it's so relatable
I am part of the LGBT community and I do not understand how this song may seem offensive to someone, in fact I loved it. This small group of people who get angry about everything does not represent
I'm a gay girl and I totally understand Billie. It doesn't offend me in the slightest bit because I loved a girl who was a friend of mine for 3 years. A year into me having feelings for her, I decided to just rip the band-aid off, just in case there was a chance. She said she was straight. And of course, being rejected doesn't feel good but I was so relieved she was straight. Because I didn't have to deal with her telling me that she just doesn't like me because she doesn't like me. Her being straight made everything easier to get over. So yeah, I definitely get what Billie means. People just get touchy when they see the word "gay"
The thing is that she’s a teenager and she’s still figuring out love and life and it’s literally her explaining how every teenager probably feels at some point in their teen-hood.
Oh my god, some people just want to be outraged about something, anything. She is brilliant and that is such a fantastic way to describe a feeling we’ve all had. Just shut up and let her create.
I really like that she did this. People these days are too afraid others will jump down their throats even when there is nothing offensive, and it’s probably even worse that they make something not offensive offensive because it takes away from the stuff that really matters with shallow stuff. Someone will always be crying just to cry and not realize the negative impact of not thinking their attacks through. By hiding - we are giving power to the wrong people. And when it really matters, it will be too jumbled at that point to even matter.
How could people be too sensitive? Or they just try to misunderstand??? She doesn't mean to wish him or her gay, just say that and nothing else. It's a good song to me ♥♥♥ JUST CHILL GUYS omg
i literally once, to get over a crush, convinced myself the guy i liked was a closeted gay who didn’t want to come to terms with his gayness and that’s why the boy didn’t wanna give me the time of day but did to other girls 🤷🏻♀️
Tbh as an lgbt person, this song isn’t as problematic as people say it is. Yes, it could be taken the wrong way at first but just listen to this and boom. Also it’s a bop and it’s freaking poetic af
It’s a simple ass concept I actually can’t believe people hate the song because they think it’s “offensive” thats pretty absurd🤧 and people need to grow up
Maybe I know why people misunderstood this song maybe it is because People were thinking that if someone doesn’t like you you’re just going to be like” oh he’s gay then “ But that’s not what the song is about. The statement “I wish you were gay” is more about saying “ I wish him/her (person who rejected me) told me he/she didn’t like me because he/she is gay ,so I can understand his/her reason and move on with life instead of crying over him/her and letting my insecurities get to me.
I don’t think it’s necessarily offensive but I think this girl struggles a lot with trying to be edgy and in effect she just shows her age a lot lol. Everyone is constantly telling her she’s so mature for her age which overall she does seem to be but like when you really listen to her talk and look at the shit she does on social media it’s very very 16 year old struggling to come off as deep as possible lmao. it’s apart of growing up I suppose
The text is great she wishes they didn't like her because they don't fall for her gender, not because they just don't like HER If you listen in the song she explains it perfectly
So I actually JUST discovered this song a couple weeks before she released it while listening to a bunch of unreleased songs done by her and when I saw that one I was like “oh she would never/could never release that bc it’d be too controversial” and I was RIGHT but she did it anyway and people are just too sensitive
idk if it’s bc I’m bi but I interpreted it as what she said like “damn you’re not interested in me, I wish you were gay so there’d be a reason” but also “damn you’re not interested in me because you’re straight, I wish you were gay” idk it works both ways
I swear people get so offended over everything and locals wanna assume shes gay after just seeing the title of the song....OBVIOUSLY SHES EXPLAINED THE MEANING A THOUSAND TIMES AND THAT'S NOT WHAT IT MEANS! same, i'm bi too - kinda helped me through getting over this girl in my year at school (except she's straight) but the "unrequited love" part of it was relatable for me. i didn't find any offense with it and i thought it was rly good
ew
it’s literally abt billie liking someone who doesn’t like her back because of her... she wants the reason to be because he was gay not because he just doesn’t like her YALL CALM DOWN HOW IS IT EVEN “OFFENSIVE”
@@plutodile it is not. For the last time, it is not. 😑😑
@@plutodile How is it queerbaiting? It's about her unrequited love for this guy she hopes doesn't like her because he's gay (instead of just not liking her). She's not gay, and she's not hinting at possibly being gay. So like???
My baby girl 😍
I love when Billie just talks. I mean her music is heavenly too but just listen to her talk. It's so nice to hear.
If I were her I would have been totally unapologetic. She had nothing to be sorry for, it was a good song and wasn't offensive to normal gays like myself, it was the tumblr snowflakes that tried to make it offensive and that's not fair on Billie.
Basically shes saying that, she wants a better reason than "I dont like u."
Like, they're gay, gay men dont like women
the thing billie said about i wish u were straight is literally what i went through and that song helped me through it i’m-
I'm gay and while this doesn't offend me, I find the concept pretty lame and its not surprising it got some peoples backs up. If would be very surprised if they didn't see this criticism coming. May have even been seeking the press for it who knows - gives Billie the opportunity to speak out and look like a good guy (I think she's fine btw). Just my cynical two cents
I’m gay and I understood it 😭
How many times will she have to explain this, I really don’t understand how u can find this offensive or insulting?
@@plutodile wrong
from what i've seen people mostly don't like the "i use your orientation to make myself feel better, because you being gay would mean i'm not the one who's unattractive, all girls are" and i wouldn't say that's necessarily offensive, but i get why ppl are mad about it
I don't know what happened but there you go, people. She has explained the meaning of her song and there is nothing offensive about it. As long as everyone's okay.
honestly the gays are chill with it. it’s the snowflake “allies” who are freaking out. calm down. if us gays aren’t offended, you shouldn’t be either.
What I got from the song was that when someone gets rejected by their crush they don’t want to be rejected because of something like “their looks” or “their personality” but it would feel a bit more comforting to be told “I don’t want to be with you because I’m gay” and you know it’s not something they can’t control.
Absolutely thought it was about a girl that didn’t like her back... 🤷🏻♀️
Smh
thanks! ngl i don't really like this song 'cause it does feel like "i wish you were gay 'cause that would mean i'm not the one who's unattractive, it means all girls are"
just using someone's orientation to make yourself feel better and that's just...yikes
on the other hand i see how she didn't mean it too seriously and i'm pretty sure she sees that it's a bit problematic, nothing against her
I've heard her songs plenty of times but never listen to them on my own accord except for this song and I love it so damn much because it's so relatable
I am part of the LGBT community and I do not understand how this song may seem offensive to someone, in fact I loved it. This small group of people who get angry about everything does not represent
Love billie and she did *not* deserve the backlash
Her voice is so smooth 😍❤️
She’s THE best omg
people love to hate her & idk why. she's an angel
Billie's explanation sounded so confusing 😂
I know right 😂
its seriously not hard to understand 😂
She was just speaking in Eilishegese. Totally normal
@@justanotherbluebelt2691 lolz🤣
Okay seriously Scarlett this is becoming a problem (btw hello old friend)
shes so beautiful
its a bop. periodt
i didn’t like the song at first but now i feel much better and im glad she didn’t just ignore the backlash
its my favorite song by her...
I WANTED MOREEEEE
I really like that she did this. People these days are too afraid others will jump down their throats even when there is nothing offensive, and it’s probably even worse that they make something not offensive offensive because it takes away from the stuff that really matters with shallow stuff. Someone will always be crying just to cry and not realize the negative impact of not thinking their attacks through.
By hiding - we are giving power to the wrong people. And when it really matters, it will be too jumbled at that point to even matter.
almost perfectly explained, quick and simple.
IT'S SUCH A MASTERPIECE
Ok but Billie seems so happy lately😍
Ppl gonna be offended no matter what girl keep thriving
How could people be too sensitive? Or they just try to misunderstand??? She doesn't mean to wish him or her gay, just say that and nothing else. It's a good song to me ♥♥♥ JUST CHILL GUYS omg
She looks so😍😍 in this interview
i literally once, to get over a crush, convinced myself the guy i liked was a closeted gay who didn’t want to come to terms with his gayness and that’s why the boy didn’t wanna give me the time of day but did to other girls 🤷🏻♀️
Billie I LOVE YOU
She shouldn't have to apologize , se did nothing 🙁💙
i'm lgbtq+ and this is really not offensive lol
Tbh as an lgbt person, this song isn’t as problematic as people say it is. Yes, it could be taken the wrong way at first but just listen to this and boom. Also it’s a bop and it’s freaking poetic af
It’s a simple ass concept I actually can’t believe people hate the song because they think it’s “offensive” thats pretty absurd🤧 and people need to grow up
shes so pretty
Maybe I know why people misunderstood this song maybe it is because People were thinking that if someone doesn’t like you you’re just going to be like” oh he’s gay then “ But that’s not what the song is about. The statement “I wish you were gay” is more about saying “ I wish him/her (person who rejected me) told me he/she didn’t like me because he/she is gay ,so I can understand his/her reason and move on with life instead of crying over him/her and letting my insecurities get to me.
I dont see why people are offended
in love with the jacket
she’s so pretty.
Billie is the best ever ❤❤
seriously we have more important things to worry about... the girl is talented and she wrote a bomb ass song!!
"Wish You Were Straight" Mdrr im done
Billie is AweSoMe 👏
The text is great she wishes they didn't like her because they don't fall for her gender, not because they just don't like HER
If you listen in the song she explains it perfectly
I understood it before it was released because I watched her live insta video...
i love her
*-totally understood what she said-*
It wasn't even confusing 😂
I'm not an intellect like her
@@bliant3877 omfg I understood that sksks thankss
As a fellow gay, the first time I listened to it i cried so hard I love you bbbb
0:57 She's talking about my life
This song has been stuck in my head all week (the livestream version).
Also I can't really related because the girl I have a crush on is gay!
So I actually JUST discovered this song a couple weeks before she released it while listening to a bunch of unreleased songs done by her and when I saw that one I was like “oh she would never/could never release that bc it’d be too controversial” and I was RIGHT but she did it anyway and people are just too sensitive
I love the song sm
I relate to this song so muchhhhhhhhhhh
What microphone did they use for this??? I really love the sound of it and I want to see If I can save up for it...
Baby, don't apologize, you did nothing wrong. This generation is way too sensitive that's all.
@@plutodile if you are implying that billie was queerbaiting or being homophobic, you missed the whole point of her song.
i love her 💕✨👼
idk if it’s bc I’m bi but I interpreted it as what she said like “damn you’re not interested in me, I wish you were gay so there’d be a reason” but also “damn you’re not interested in me because you’re straight, I wish you were gay” idk it works both ways
Yeah. It's one of those songs that ended up having double meanings.
I swear people get so offended over everything and locals wanna assume shes gay after just seeing the title of the song....OBVIOUSLY SHES EXPLAINED THE MEANING A THOUSAND TIMES AND THAT'S NOT WHAT IT MEANS! ITS NOT HER WISHING A GIRL WAS GAY, AND ITS NOT MEANT TO BE OFFENSIVE!...thank you for your time.
It's funny how it's straight people who are getting offended
She's really awesome i like her
Her explanation is exactly how I got the song. Nothing offensive
I love billie ❤️
As a gay girl, I totally loved the song and the "wish you were straight" part she talks about here is exactly what I thought of. People need to chill.
