  • Today we are back with this 1976 Jeep CJ5 but this time we came prepared! Now that we have a starter hopefully we'll be able to bring this CJ back to life and drive it 150 miles back to the shop!
It definitely has some problems, such as a misaligned axle, non-responsive starter solenoid, and uncooperative engine, but thats nothing that rebuild rescue can't handle! Will a new starter, fresh gas, and some old school rebuild rescue ingenuity be enough to get this 45 year old vehicle back to the shop? Find out in this episode!

Watching this, I keep screaming to no one, "You got fuel." "You are turning the engine over." "Now check for spark!" "Take off that distributor cap." File the point gap if needed. Fuel and spark are always the first two checks.

He's been driving me nuts for two videos. I'm thinking it's pretty basic: Fuel, Spark, Compression! Oh! and that starter won't turn until the stuck Bendix pulls in and allows the field switch to make. The alternator bearing only costs like $3.00. Wasted money and effort.

    I have owned three CJ's from that era, 75 CJ5, 77 CJ7 golden eagle, and a 79 CJ7. The 77 CJ7 Golden Eagle, with the 304 was my favorite.
They all had sloppy steering boxes, and the bigger the tires, and the more mudding you did with them, the sloppier they got.
I miss every one of them now though.

You should always turn the engine over without spark plugs installed after filling cylinder with oil, it allows engine to rotate freely without compression reducing risk of bent or broken parts

LOL...everytime you jumped the selinoid I wondered if you had the switch on, but I figured your cameraman must have turned it on, but you never checked for spark so I figured you knew if it was on.
Then my ass cheeks were scrunchin' seat, knowin' that springpack bolt top was prolly sheared and the axle was crooked, on top of the Worn Out manual steering box!
My '82 CJ5 had the same box and we put a stock 350 Chevy in it.
When I stomped the gas in 2nd gear on a dirt road, it swapped ends ditch to ditch several times, with alternate brake And gas pedals before I got her straightened back out!!
The steering wheel would almost go full circle each way...lol
So I can't Imagine drivin' it 150 miles with the axle crooked, and possibly moving forward and back.
Well, now you might know why the guy Rolled it!
Puttin' new cylinder heads on mine, and watchin' yur vid during breaks was entertainin' tho.
      Keep 'er sideways!!

If all else fails hook a log chain to the front end and have someone pull you and pop the clutch on it to fire it off in like 3rd gear and just have them keep pulling until she fires off from brute force :) Back when I was "between starters" I always made sure to park on a hill so I could start mine by rolling down hill and popping the clutch. Mine just had points & condenser (capacitor). Mine had 4 on the floor too, but 1st gear in mine was Granny gear and I generally always took off in 2nd and only used 1st if I was doing something like pulling a buddy out of a ditch or my Brother's VW Beetle out of a muddy cornfield, both of which seemed to happen a lot more often than you'd think. And yes, that 4 in the floor has a long throw pattern. Mine was my 1st stick shift vehicle except for our old John Deere "A" , our old '66 Chevy dump truck and our 1959 Ford "D" school bus, so I always just assumed all stick shifts had long throws, LOL!

Strange, but it seems there is one trick you might not know. If you have any spray can, you can spray into the carb and the engine will fire on it, even without or with old fuel. Of course, what is in the can should not damage the engine (like paint, for example). And obviously, if there are sparks flying around, you have a working flame thrower.
Apart from that, it works flawlessly! ;-)

Keep doing what you do, I like to see the mistakes bad calls all of it, the last thing utube needs is another fully edited perfect run,
When you dropped the spark plug trying to hand screw them back in I got a huge burst of deja vu, of me and my dad working on his crappy car trying to get it to start so he could drive to work.
Iv still got some of his spanners (wrenches) all the imperial ones in inches lol all mine are metric, its such a pain but yet I still keep them.

FYI, if you have a hard time finding the solenoid or the price is outrageous, grab a starter relay for a 70s Ford, the mounting holes might be slightly different and need to be oblonged, but it will work.

I love this channel! I really wish I had the time and money to do this as I love working on projects and bringing stuff back to life! Unfortunately it's a bit harder and more expensive to do this in the UK because you can't just find an old car that's been sat for 20 years and drive it on the roads legally, you have to book it in for an MOT to get a certificate of roadworthiness before you can drive it!
Loving the 401 project as well and can't wait to see the finished result but rest up that leg brother otherwise you'll do yourself more damage and be off it for longer.

Finally subscribed. The CJ pulled me in. I have a 78 CJ5 I'm just starting to dismantle for a rebuild. No motor in my carcass and I don't know what to put in. I'm leaning towards a 300 Ford 6 just for the fun factor and cool old exhaust burble. A friend has several typical 305/350 motors. I'm not a snowflake, but seeing you pour gas in the carb and make sparks right above the throat made me cringe. I've has gas blow up on me on a fire and a friend was scorched when she lit a burn pile and didn't know her husband had dumped old gas on it. Be careful and I hope to see this one running.

I mistyped the year. It was a 1980 CJ5 that I purchased new in Nov 1979. My only true complaint with it was the darn quarter-round piece of metal on the rear of the door opening. Every time I would drag my fat butt out of the driver seat the back pocket on my Levi's would snag on it. Eventually I managed to tear out the rear pocket seam on every pair of jeans I owned. The CJ7 has nice big rectangular door opening and didn't have that issue.

ATF and a bit of acetone works wonders for freeing up cylinders and rings. It's a lot thinner and the acetone helps pull the ATF into the ring lands and down the cylinder.
Those remote starter relays should be plentiful, they're super generic and used in many applications. Power in, power out and a signal from your ignition switch

Just some advice . Use a good penetrating oil in cylinders or trans fluid with some acetone added or if bad rusted or stuck bad use vinuger . But don't let the vinuger sit in cylinders for more than week or two . Can eat into things . We use it in old tractors .

One of the reasons you're all over the road are those big tires. They're fine for off road use but for highway driving, just put a set of all season small truck radials or even car radials on it and it will handle a LOT better on the highway (past experience) and that loud hum of the tires will disappear too. Not saying that's your only problem but it can be significant and the ride quality on roads will improve too with car/light truck tires.

    • @rebuildrescue

Sounds like its turning over faster all the time. And yes it helps if your having the ignition key in the correct on position it works a lot better LOL I would have never been that honest had I did that LOL It would have been my secret.
