careful with saigon cinnamon, I think Dr Gregor mentioned something about liver damage if you regularly eat it. Switch to ceylon cinnamon instead

Ceylon cinnamon has neglible coumarin content, compared to the other cinnamon types. While coumarin is generally safe in small amounts, high doses can be toxic, particularly to the liver and kidneys. So yes, switch to Ceylon!

I just had a thought - there was actually little chance that you could have accomplished the daily dozen because the recommendations are for the average human which most of the time is a man. I think women don't need to eat as much, especially if we are not hungry and are full. I enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing your experience and take aways!

1/4 cup dried jumbo oats makes 1/2 cup cooked for 1 tick on the whole grains. Coconut milk isn't recommended by Dr Greger because of the saturated fat content. Try blended cashews instead. Drop salt as someone else commented. Add black pepper when adding turmeric especially in the curry.

Indians put sugar in curry to balamce the acidity of tomatoes. They don't put brown sugar in Lentils with garam masala. If you like the flavor, go for it. You did great with the daily dozen. We should consider it a guideline and not stress about it. Ultimate goal is to eat a balanced and healthy diet.

There’s no perfect diet but the daily dozen is a good benchmark. I would suggest that the coconut milk in your dal should be removed. Coconut milk is high in saturated fat and encourages the body to produce cholesterol. An alternative might be oat milk, much healthier.

  • @JosiahMcCarthy
    @JosiahMcCarthy 10 місяців тому +14

I will say, having tried this myself for many days in a row, it just strikes me as so much easier for a man. Like, getting those items in on a serving-by-serving basis is much easier when every meal is like, twice the size of your meals here. I also walk 30 minutes each way to get to work 5 days a week, so that's another easy one for me.
Pro tip, unrelated: water sauteing is certainly healthier than using oil, but it doesn't extract nearly as much flavor out of spices, so I recommend mixing any natural nut butter with a lot of ground spices (3/4 C. cashew butter with 1/4 C. garam masala for example) and after it's sat for a couple days, then you have a really great spice paste that's easy to use and it adds richness to something like this dal without being refined. It is caloric, and you can watch some Dr Greger videos about how it's possible that nut butters are less healthy than whole nuts, and he recommends unroasted, which is harder to find and usually an expensive health food brand, but I don't like to pretend that "it's just as good" or that "I don't even notice the difference" of oil sauteing vs water sauteing, when I actually find it makes a massive difference in flavor. Other top use case: chili. Huge difference in flavor, especially if you're trying to eat the chili in the same day you're making it.

I really like following the Daily Dozen app. I find it fun and challenging. I do not meet all the goals. Also, I am 5'3 and about 120 pounds, the recommended portion sizes are way too much, if I eat that many vegetables in a day I get an upset stomach, and same with the beans. So I kind of created my own portion sizes. A good tip to get in the 90 minutes of exercise---adopt a dog lol I have a pug puppy and he forces me to walk so much everyday, all I have to do is add in 20 minutes of yoga and I have easily reached 90 or more minutes a day. =)

It is just crazy that Doctors do not get nutrition training in Medical schools.
Every doctor visit should include some nutrition discussion. The majority of the population is over weight or obese leading to high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. Schools and hospital cafeterias should be leading the way to good health by setting the example of what is a healthy meal and teaching people what to eat and why.. Every person in the hospital for heart disease should have a nutrition class before being checked out from the hospital with follow up education and training in nutrition. Medicare and Medicaid should require patient nutrition education as part of their standard of care. Nutrition information should be run on the hospital TV channel.

Heart disease is the number one killer of people today and cancer is number two.
Being over weight is the number one factor leading to an early death.
People who are over weight have higher risks for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
Even children today have signs of artery disease. Fast foods and sugary drinks have long term consequences.
There is an obesity epidemic today where over 60% of the population is overweight or obese.
What is common today and "NORMAL" is not healthy. The average person today is not healthy and is taking medications.
Heart attacks were once only common in people over 65. Today people in their 40 are having heart attacks.
Add more plants and vegetables to your diet and less junk and overly processed foods

Depending on how you structure your Daily Dozen of course, but when I ran it through Cronometer with the things I like to eat that also check off the boxes I came up to just about 1,300 calories.
I can see why, for some, it can be quite filling, especially the more low calorie dense foods you use.
I messed around with my breakfast smoothie and got it down to checking about 3/4 of the boxes. Makes the rest of the meals something I don't think about anymore and the rest of the boxes are almost always covered. I get about 80% or more calories from whole plants so getting the boxes checked happens most of the time. The only reason why I miss somedays is just checking off more boxes from a category than exist during some days.
But, that surely won't hurt me at all. Just changing more of one plant for less of another for a day.
Daily Dozen is such a good target to have in one's mind though. Just hitting the list makes you a better eater.

W/Ceylon cinnamon, walnuts, and unsweetened soy milk. Followed by black coffee and soymilk. And a tangerine. My snack was some spicy seaweed snacks & two hard boiled eggs.(I’m veg not vegan). my dinner was a huge salad I ate out of a mixing bowl 😂 of arugula and spinach with baby tomatoes, red onion, feta, pumpkin seeds & garbanzo beans with a killer vinaigrette of 1.5pts EV olive oil, 1pt red wine vinegar, 5 pts grainy mustard, 2 tbsp nutritional yeast, 3-6 grinds fresh cracked black pepper (your taste), red crushed pepper to your taste (mine is a generous pinch) & a good pinch of turmeric, garlic powder, & oregano and SHAKE. ❤

This is just too much food for me honestly. I could even see somebody who is on like a plant-based bodybuilding plan using this method but I just don’t eat when I’m not hungry and I would have to eat when I wasn’t hungry to eat as much food. I think this is some thing that will definitely work well for some people but for some Other people it’s not gonna be realistic at all. Good job, I need to do a list too, but I don’t think Dr Gregor would approve of all the better than bouillon, that’s 1500 mg of sodium just from the bouillon, then you added more salt and didn’t even measure it. Try replacing the salt with a salt substitute, especially if your husband had a stroke. Read up on salt’s effect on our cardiovascular system. I know, it’s hard, it was the hardest change I made, but it will be one of the best things you do for your health and your families health. Try Bensons Table Tasty salt replacement, and or potassium salt, or adding tomato paste, balsamic vinegar, lemon or lime, and if you can eat spicy, lots of pepper. Enjoyed your video

Some people on blood pressure medications should not eat potassium salt substitutes. Check with your doc if you take BP meds.

I’ve learned recently that salt also leaches calcium from our bones contributing to osteoporosis.

@@Maggie-zr2owyes I heard from Dr Greger that salt interferes with calcium absorption. I didn't know.

@@skippy6462 So many things we didn’t know. I’m currently learning about oral health and changing up my routine to save my teeth and gums as much as possible. I’m learning things that none of my dentists or hygienists ever told me. It’s both great and disappointing…but forward we must go. If you haven’t already, check out xylitol (as a mint, gum, or just plain crystals melted in the mouth), and nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste. Dr G has a section on mouth health in his new book but I haven’t seen it yet so I’m interested in what he has to say. I’m happy to share what I’ve learned if you’re interested.

I've heard the opposite - that salt is incredibly good for you and most people need more. But it can't be table salt, must be sea salt or Himalayan salt.

I think that it is always entertaining watching a vegetarian/vegan preparing all the food types and the overhead hassles associated with that lifestyle choice. It is like they are always thinking about the next meal, a trait usually reserved for CR followers. For a mostly meats consumer (myself) it is as simple as a steak on the grill with the option of broccoli with real butter in the pan, and that's food prep for the day. I'm 64 and exercise 8-9 hours per week, no health issues.

You have the same nutritional requirements and "overheads" as vegans do. You are just ignoring them. You need fibre, vitamins, minerals antioxidants that your current diet does not provide. All all that saturated fat is terrible for your arteries. Take better care of yourself.

This people don't do that because they are vegans, but because they want to preserve their health in better then average condition. Everyone should do that if their idea is not having the problems most people have. You are ok at 64 just like smokers may also be, it doesn't mean it is the best they can do for their health.

If you mostly get your information about veganism or vegetarianism from social media, then I can see how you'd conclude that this is a necessity for plant based eating.
If you meet regular vegans or vegetarians in real life however, you'd see that quite a few similarly just throw something in a pan and perhaps put a sauce on it once it's done.
In all fairness I've seen people online cooking meat dishes where there's a good few stages to go through before it reaches its end point. I can compare a simple plant based dish to a complex meat dish just as you are comparing a simple meat dish to a multi stage plant one.

Throw the microwave away! It’s changed the structure of what ever you cook in it to death. We here in Europe never use microwaves. If you need to warm up something quick, better steam it or use airfryer.

Microwaving changes the structure of the food. The body treats the food as an invader. Far better not to use the microwave.
