Elphaba and Glinda run from the Emerald City guards.
More of my stuff here: etherstar.devia...
I wanted to build up my portfolio before beginning my job search, and as part of that I created this. Using the musical "Wicked," I drew a storyboard for "Defying Gravity" as if it were an animated feature. Those of you who have seen the play will notice some differences. Some of these were to make it more visually interesting as a cartoon, others because the audio doesn't have all of the dialogue breaks that feature in the play.
I hope you all enjoy!
I wonder would happen if Glinda accepted Elphaba's offer to work together. How much would Oz have changed?
That's why we have fanfics!
It would've been changed for good-
I'm sorry I'm 4 years late but I had to do it
Fiyero would be in glinda's place and elphaba and glinda would be literally unstoppable together
When she says "if you care to find me, look to the Western sky!" I lose it.
Oh man, same. I still get chills and I've listened to this song a million times.
Logan Jordan 4:32 :D
Imagine in the bloopers she would be like:
So if you care to find me,look to the western sky!*Elphaba points furious to the east*
Glinda:uh...Elphaba...that's the east...
Elphaba:LOOK TO THE WESTERN SKY!!!*quickly points west*
Me too!
The moment Galinda almost mounts the broom, but instead of that she turns away and steps down from the gargoyle's head ... a real tear-jerker. Insane job !
I honestly love this. I've watched it probably a few dozen times.
Thank you!!
This would make an awesome film! Like imagine if someone like Disney or something made a movie about Wicked with the animation as good as it was in Frozen! That would be amazing! I honestly can't believe that being the music nuts they are they haven't already done so.
a live action version of Wicked is in the works!!
Jesus Chavira soon isn't soon enough :')
Whoever made this, please finish it, it's so beautiful.
. . . . good point. I'm sure there are many talented singers and actresses out there who will someday play the Wicked Witch of the West, but there can be only one Elphaba. Same thing with Galinda; if you can't have Elphaba without Idina Menzel, then you can't have Galinda without Kristin Chenoweth.
I totally agree with you. That's what I think. I'm all on your side
Is it Ok if i ship this?
+Waffle warz Aj Yes. XP
:D yay :D
It's ok, I do too
+Waffle warz Aj It's canon actually
Yay :3
I know it might not be, but I really hope you made them look 5 seconds away from kissing through most of this on purpose. Also that ending scene killed me. I was so scared even though I knew I shouldn't be.
This gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes! GOOOOOOOOOD JOB!!! :D
I personally thought the ending can be more dramatic than just a disappearing witch, but the rest is amazing, some parts just WHOA
Wow! Brought me very close to tears! I've never seen this musical, but the song is just so powerful and your art brought so much more to it. Truly stunning job.
If only this had been expanded and perhaps done for a few more songs in this style. It's impressive as hell
You really are quite amazing. I've never seen the play or read the book but this really gives me a sense of what's going on in the story. Kudos must be given.
This is an incredible storyboard! Everything that you drew on that storyboard was breath taking. Do you think you can make one for the "As Long As You're Mine" scene?
It probably doesn't matter but the original Oz series says that Oz is a landlocked country surrounded by an impassible desert (that turns whatever living thing that steps on it into sand) on all four sides of the rectangular country. so it wouldn't have a sea next to the Emerald City, which is situated in the center of Oz.
@muzafar001 Adobe Flash CS3, but I wouldn't recommend it. Flash is meant to handle vector images so it crashed a lot while I was putting this together. I think After Effects might handle this sort of thing better and I've heard good things about Storyboard Pro.
I think we all agree that Oz is such a dark place
I loved that! That was amazing! :) You rock at this! Even though it was in sketch it seemed complete already; you made the drawings really easy to follow and yet at the same time they're really diverse and complex with all the feelings the characters and song has. Loved it!
WOW... is there anything else to say? Best Wicked vid I've ever seen. I would love to see this folly anamated.
This is remarkable! I just wish I had the talent to put something like this together!
Thank you!
But let me tell, you, talent is just hard work and practice. My first foray into animation was with claymation, essentially the same thing as your Lego animation! (And your Lego animation is WAAAY better than my first stuff.) I was super into the Nightmare Before Christmas back then and wanted to learn how they did it. So I just started playing around. And over the years, I got better!
daaaaaaaannnnnng, that was awesome! i would love to see this animated some day
Well put together story board! There are a few mistakes though (and i don't mean to be rude or mean) in context with the script but, this is a great idea and its great to see it in animation form!
I got goosebumps...
Elphaba Thropp, Galinda Upland & Rise Hickey (Me) run from the Emerald City guards.
beautiful
I want this to be animated so bad this is soooo good 😢💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Thank you! I think it took me a couple months. I was still figuring things out back then.
THIS WAS SO AWESOME! GREAT JOB! QwQ
You've done a really amazing job! However, if they do make a movie, I would prefer it was based more on the Musical - but again, this is really spectacular.
I loved it!!!
Get it on the big screen ;)
+Thomas Schyvens erm i hope it doesnt go on the big screen, it doesnt belong there, it belongs on stage
I love this video!!!
Amazing... amazing! :D
Could I make this in a Lego stopmotion?
Duis Artifex That would be amazing! If you do then you have to let me know so I can watch it!
MMmm IM CRIYING
LOL they missed at the end
I ship them so much
DUDE!! That's AWESOME!!! I want to see this finished!!!
interesante
Before this I saw a Butt paste ad. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want this to be an animation movie! Wicked is so amazing, it would be a great Disney movie (in fact, this storyboard reminds me of a Disney sequence ;) )
same
There's already a Wicked movie, it's called Frozen.
(They even took Idina Menzel :p )
Sadly the (confirmed) wicked move will be live action (coming out December's 20 2019)
@@carlosalejandroalvarenga4913 AAAAHHHHH
Carlos Alejandro Alvarenga it’s now 2020 and it’s not out lol
Did you guys know in the book that this was based on and during this particular scene Glinda and Elphy actually kiss.
Sammy TGR IM READING THE BOOK AND IM NOT AT THAT PART YET AH
Sammy TGR Whats the name of the book?
same thing as the musical bro, Wicked.
XD sorry I should have guessed that
Sammy TGR OTP OTP. SHIP SHIP SHIP OTP SHIP OTP.
I loved how you defined so well the faces of the guards! And the scene of "if this is love it comes with too much high a cost" with Fiyero was incredible. The city of Oz was so well drawn as well. And the flying scene! But by far my favorite was when she first leapt in her broom. How you made her stand on it in the balcony and jump without second regrets was so outstanding. Also, nice choice of "socks" for Elphie.
I agree! That scene where she steps on the broom is so awesome!
This needs to be a Kickstarter. If Disney, Dreamworks, and any other animation studio won't make this movie, then WE should do it! Gather the best independent animators the Internet has to offer, hold auditions on UA-cam for independent voice actors/singers, get some independent musicians to arrange and create background/atmospheric music (the in-between melodies), the works!
7 years later and we're _still_ wishing for this to come true *a a a a h h h h*
* screams * SOME SEND THOS TO FUCKING DISNEY OR FOX SO THAT THEY MAKE THIS A FUCKING MOVIE PLEASE!!!!!
Actually a Disney animator has made some, and is trying to get this made! I am hoping and preying!
thank you gof for hearingmy PRAYERS !!!!! * SQUEAL*
In an interview with show people, Stephen Schwartz said he was impressed with the storyboard. But, he said that he don't see Wicked as an animated film.
* sobs * well we do
AimlessSky I have to agree with that. It isn't something that should be "Disney-ed" down.
Am I the only one who expected them to kiss towards the end there? I mean, I'm not acting crazy here right? I can't be the only one who thought that was going to happen
You're not XD
+Jake Marzano nope you aint
I kinda thought it would happen. the animatic was definitely indicating that it would.
I was hoping they would.
me
DAMN ELPHABA THICCC WITH A TRIPLE C
*i really love this animation it's in my top three favorites*
-my frieeeend-
This is speculator!!!!! Someone PLEASE make this into a movie! +1 if you'd watch a Disney-style version of Wicked.
I think disney ripped off your storyboard for FROZEN's "for the first time in forever reprise"
Omar vela pérez This was released in 2011, Frozen came out in 2013. That scene was already planned and being animated by 2011
+Jack Filmer And the Broadway show wicked (Which introduced the music aspect of wicked) was wrote for the theater in 2004.
2003! The book was written in 1995.
Overall great work, but I think parts of it needs adjustments. Having elphie sing while out of screen is not a great idea, and the storyboard is missing a few things from the play, such as the creation of her cape, or the rush of when she finally flies or the guards rushing in to stop her to give it a sense of urgency as she is already in the clear by flying near the beginning of the song. That said, there are also parts i really liked, such as the argument while going up the stairs in the beginning! :D
Every time I watch a storyboard or animatic of this song, when it gets to the part where Elphaba asks Glinda to come with her, but Glinda refuses, everybody draws them close together, and I swear, I'm just like, "For the love of God, kiss already!"
One thing that really concerns me about this storyboard is that the artist doesn't fully understand the emotions and motives for some of the lyrics. For instance: when Elphaba sings about being afraid for too long of "loosing love I guess I've lost", she is shown interacting with Fiyero (whom she has known for a short amount of time at this point in the plot). In actuality, she is referring to trying her best to please her father and sister, both of whom are ashamed of her innate magic powers and green skin.
Oh... did you write the book?
Brennan Peters Please, the book and the musical are distant cousins.
Good point but if you look in the book, she and Fiyero had been friends for a while and while they weren't romantically involved until adulthood, she did find him to be handsome. But still good point musical wise
TaylorSays I think she was referring to her parents. But I think putting Fiyero there fits because it is a new love that has sprouted
It can be interpreted in different ways. I agree that that line was most likely about her family, but it isn't limited to it.
Omg! I could totally see this being part of the movie!! I'm most nervous about the flying portion in the movie! I DO NOT WANT IT TO LOOK FAKE!! We just gotta wait and see !
That was wicked!
Question are they actually gay for each other or is it just a really close relationship? I’m new and I’m trying to get everything down
Edit: could someone just explain this whole musical to me 😂
In the musical are just close freinds (which is how I see them) and not in a relationship, its just the fandom ships them. I haven't read the book but from what ive heard I guess they are gay in that.
Luna animates why thank you good sir 🎩
Im a girl lol and no problem :D
Luna animates ...... cRaP
I meant thank you good ma’am 🎩
This is amazing, I hope they use your work if they ever make a film, really well thought through. Only suggestion would be to build up the anticipation more by not letting her actually fly until the climax of the song as in the west end production. You're super talented though, don't let anyone bring you down ;) See what I did there?
This is amazeifying. It literally brought tears to my eyes. They REALLY need to make this a film! But I would prefer if it isn't animated. But if it is animated, then I hope its CGI!
Yeah, "Wicked" would be a great CG film, if it were Disney making it. I LOVE the animation they executed for "Frozen" and "Tangled", which combines CGI with the best elements of traditional hand-drawn animation (which, now that I think about it, would also be a good medium for "Wicked").
Jordan Briskin quiet eventually winding them ideas and will have no choice but to make a movie , but I hope you do not change the songs
TELMA LOPEZ Don't worry, I don't see the songs being changed AT ALL.
Eleanor Prentice
Are we, really?
Eleanor Prentice Indeed, it would! Although, I can't help but wonder, how would it look in traditional hand-drawn animation?
oh jeez it’s been so long since i’ve seen this. the nostalgia is real eee (*≧∀≦*) this is one of my all time favorites i- i can’t 💞💞
you were one of the many artists that has inspired me to draw and i want to thank you for inspiring me
yeah "friends"
I'm happy to be compared to them! Certainly, I've been influenced by various superhero cartoons and comics. In particular I might point to the DC Animated Universe. Couple that with a bit of Japanese anime and you get something close to current super hero shows.
Thank you. I've been freelancing and taking classes. Just finished an internship with Augenblick Studios. But I'm still working on landing a full time job.
I LOVE this! And I love how you made Elphaba resemble the original actress that played the Wicked Witch of the West in the movie. It made it even more realistic. I hope this happens someday.
Using the broom so early on was fitting in the context, so I liked it. I love Glinda stepping over the rug and the Fiyero part and the guards and... wow. This is all so amazing. The angles and shots you chose were very intelligent decisions. You should be so proud! It's brilliant.
The only thing that you totally messed up was the first chorus...The broom didn't fly until the guards are trying to open the door :S ....
Quite a few problems with this. 1. Glinda and Elphaba franticly run up the stairs, and then begin arguing. They are not arguing as they walk up the tower because they are fleeing from the guards. 2. Elphaba can't fly until she says the incantation which makes the broom levitate. This is towards the end of the song, so it's not like during the entire song she's just able to fly freely. 3. When the song says "Too long I've been afraid of losing love I guess I've lost", Elphaba says this in regards to her love for the Wizard not Fiyero. Elphaba never stops loving Fiyero throughout the show. Good artwork tho and expressions are on point.
Nah I think it's still Fiyero to me, I see it as Elphaba sees Fiyero as already taken by Glinda, that's the meaning behind 'losing love I guess I've lost, well if that's love...." so she's trying to let go with that statement, even though she still clearly loves Fiyero.
@@GemGames3 What you're saying makes sense but Elphaba's love for the wizard began right at the beginning of the show, so It has had time to develop. Her love for Fiyero though began 1 song and 2ish scenes just before leaving to the Emerald City. Her love for the Wizard is more of a dream that's connected to her ambitions to do good. When Glinda says "You can still be with the Wizard, what you've worked and waited for. You can have all you ever wanted" Glinda is referencing to Elphaba's wish of being with the Wizard, and although the Wizard is bad, she should just apologize and in return have this thing she's always wanted. Then when Elphaba says the line "well if that's love, It comes at much too high a cost" she is saying that although she has this love for the Wizard, the price of knowing he's the cause of evil and she wouldn't be able to do anything about it is too high for her. I get what you are saying and It makes sense but this song mainly reflects on her emotions and reaction to what just happened in the Wizards chamber scene with the Wizard not being who she thought he was. The subject of Fiyero in this song would be a little out of place considering the timing and recent events.
I think the only problem I would have with that is, as well as its extreme optimism, we wouldn't get Idina, who is basically everyone's (including my own's) favorite Elphaba, and honestly, I would really only want a movie with her as Elphie. Besides that, I've seen a load of talent online that could definitely make this real, but not as good as what Disney or Dreamworks could do.
Damn, you're good. You have great ideas and I love the art style.
If...sorry, WHEN "Wicked" gets an animated movie deal...you are are going to be top choice for head animator. This is guaranteed.
*Applause*
I think it will be better if the soldiers shoot the fireworks at her as she's disappearing, so the Ozians misunderstand that she can teleport with fire. btw this is awesome.
The should use this in the movie !!
YES AGREED.
Oooh, I especially love how you used the moon and the sun to represent Elphaba and Glinda respectively. It certainly helps to create the mood and visually show the differences between the two.
I finished the video!
Duis Artifex I love it! I was smile throughout the whole thing! SO AWESOME!
Thanks!
This is insanely beautiful. C:
yo i got chills with the opposing shots of glinda with the sun behind her and elphy with the moon behind her, and then it was just chills the rest of the video. this is so heckin good
Good News for all of you Wicked fans out there;
a movie musical adaptation is in the works. Jon M. Chu, director of Crazy Rich Asians, and the movie musical adaptation of In The Heights, is set to direct.
There's only one little catch; it has to be done in two separate parts; Part 1 for 2024, and Part 2 for 2025.
here's the link to the stage musical. look for Legacy and Anniversary Tributes, and you'll see the explanation.
PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!
What? No sky-writing S U R R E N D E R W I Z A R D sequence?!?
That seems to me to be a no-brainer for this song
Also, just before Glinda changes her mind and stays, maybe there should be a bit where she tries to climb aboard the broom, but looks down and realizes that she is too afraid to fly on it. Maybe the broom wobbles too much with her trying to get on, and she also realizes that Elphaba has to do this thing alone
Please fully animate this! It would be awesome!
How could anyone hate this!? The song is awesome and the storyboard pacing with the song is absolutely perfect!
it is very awsome. nice background, nice production. ive never thought elphaba fly like that. i love you!!
What software did you use to make this mock up Animated storyboard, please? Thanks
Note: Never eat 7 push up pops and then try and dance to this song, unless your up for a nice plate of pile.
I liked some parts, but what bothered me the most was Elphaba starting to fly from the beginning, and in the musical she’s good only at the end of the song
Disney should've ANIMATED this instead of making Maleficent
If they had an animated Wicked movie, using THIS storyboard (and possibly all others by you), I would definitely watch it. Your vision for this storyboard was wonderful!
I can't help but feel that the character designs remind me of characters from a tv series but I don't know what thou, Wolverine and The X-men or Avengers: EMH?
that was amazing oh wow
That was brilliant! I've seen cool animations of this but this was slightly different and I liked it.
If she plans this right she can make it to where if anyone DOES want to find her she’d be flying off into the sunset
I wish I was this talented. I draw as a hobby and have taken classes but stopped because it became less enjoyable to have to do it every week and I think my work suffered. I've just now been able to start doing better faces and hairstyles (sort of). Hopefully my small artistic talent is enough to make awesome pastries and beautifully decorated cakes (I'm going to university for a degree in pastry arts next autumn)
If your software crashes a lot, it means either that your PC doesn't have enough RAMs or that your PC is overheating if its cooling sink isn't powerful enough. Or it could possibly mean both. To fix problems, increase your RAMs and change your cooling sink for a better one. I use Lenovo laptop which sits on top of a cooling tray. I had bought this cooling tray at Amazon a few years ago. As result, the cooled laptop makes far less whirring sounds; it's almost silent. I never had any crashes yet.
I know I'll probably get a ton of crap for pointing this out, but I feel like it needs to be if you actually plan on making this into a full on animation. Oz doesn't have any oceans and I noticed that you put one behind the palace. Perhaps you could make that into a field instead? Maybe with some mountains in the background to kind of foreshadow where she's going? I dunno, just an idea *shrugs*
Oh WOW. that was beautiful. So very glad you made it different from the musical. After all, you can do so many things with animation you can't do with real people, and you really took advantage of that. this looks really good. Very empowering. I could see it as a finished product in my head... Oh, i wish this would actually be made. It would be so cool. *sighs in happiness*
Pretty dang good! My only comments are: it would have made more sense if the establishing wide shot was the first shot instead of the second (so we get a sense of where they are), and there's a 180 line skip at 0:55 that's jarring. Also, animated storyboards are called "animatics" so be sure to refer to this as such on cover letters and resumes. Good luck on the job front!
I like this, except that you seemed to forget that the big climax of the song is when she first starts to fly.
I have to say, you did beyond an amazing job...for awhile I was thinking of storyboarding this as well, it's such a powerful scene, but I'm just blown away by your storyboards. Your shots are amazing and it really heavily reflects the musical. Nice job, I hope to see more of your work!
can you make March Of the witch hunters please even with the talking and all
there's only one word to sum up this story board... WICKED
This is great! But didn't she learn to fly around the end? She kinda flew a lil early in this one.
