    what I learned from your video is that , it was easier to remember the sixtenth and eighth placements by understanding that they are all uneven numbers !!!
    1/16 , 3/16 , 5/16
    1/8 , 3/8 , 5/8 , 7/8
    1/4 , 3/4 easy !!!
    thanks great stuff !!!
    Keep up the good work !!!

      Yes the more you read the tape measure the better you'll get at it. They do have new tape measures now, BTW, that has it read out what each eighth measurement is. Just saw them the other day. If that will help you, go to the hardware store & look at some of the new ones & see what I mean. Good luck with the job! Joe :0

    Good video. Well thought out and well explained.
    Where I work...err, used to work...we have tape measures that have 1/32" increments for the first 12". Beyond that, we also had to learn to read 64ths and even to "split the line" on the tape. We learned to read a tape accurately down to .020 of an inch! So yes, reading a tape measure can become quite intricate.
    Well done.

  • @VideoJoeKnows
    @VideoJoeKnows  12 років тому

    @rickbell7 Yes, lots of tape measures start off with the first 12 ", in 1/32" increments. I don't know too many people who want to get things that close so I didn't discuss this. Not sure why tape measures do this as most of the time, you would read a tape measure further than the first 12", so if you wanted to read out in 32nds, you can't. 1/16th inches is close enough for most projects. Thanks for your comments. Glad to hear you liked the video! Joe :0

    Here in Australia we use metric and it's so much easier to read a metric because it's in 10's a trades person will say something like it's 700mm long and there saying it's 7 cm long. You guys in the USA look at getting a metric tape measure online from Australia. Our tape measures have metric and imperial on them and you will find it very easy to read.

    Not sure why everyone just doesn't do it all in 16'ths. 1 - 15 or whole numbers, then no one would have to explain this. 8 inches and 4/16ths = 8 and 1/4 inches yes-- but why does it matter? I assume for speed reading but is it that much slower to do 16'ths? I'm sure this has been talked about here or somewhere else, but I like the 16ths. You could keep the same lines so that you memorize where 4/16ths is and don't have to count lines.
    Thanks for the video Joe

    • @VideoJoeKnows
      @VideoJoeKnows  10 років тому

      It just sounds a little corny to say 8/16ths when it's easier to say half inch. I guess it's just how most of construction works & when you're calling out measurements for someone else it's easier to holler 1/4 inch, etc... For 9/16ths I might say half inch long or short half inch for 7/16ths. Just a little easier I guess especially if you get use to it. Thanks for your message! Joe :0

      VideoJoeKnows Look at a doing a video showing how to read a metric tape measure. Do you use metric tape measure. It would be great to show America about how easy the metric tape measure is to read.

    • @seanzappulla71
      @seanzappulla71 10 років тому

      VideoJoeKnows Can someone buy a metric tape measure in the USA. I think in the USA they should teach the young guys how to build a house using the metric system so if the USA does convert to metric it would be easier for them in the long term. If they get a building job outside of the USA it would make it easier for them.
