Hey man, good tutorial. But I thought I'd like to point some things out. The reason he changes the swing feel is because he actually changes between triplets to quads. And his drummers actually play with two hands on the hat. But the main feel of the song is made by sixteenth note triplets
I set a goal this week to record a video of this song. I realized immediately on Monday how so much more difficult it is to play than it sounds. I’m a semi-beginner (played on and off for many years but never really practiced or took any lessons), so I absolutely bit off more than I can chew. I will do however my best with the most basic version I can get away with. Great lesson and I’ll be sure to return to it later when I have improved my drumming skills (see you in 2030)!
My head is spinning! Great diagnostic of S. Wonder’s style. This song has been playing in my drumhead for years. I’m a left hand writer and right handed athlete. Did you start kicking bass left footed? Your hands appear righty.
Hi Bruce. Thanks for the kind words. I'm the same as you with hands. I initially taught myself and set the drum kit up as a lefty and then proceeded to play open handed. Not ideal! This set up is my work around to correct that as much as possible.
That's a definite well done for transcribing this one.... especially as it's exceptionally inconsistent all the way through....which makes it sound more interesting. I've just checked out the isolated drum track on UA-cam. Is it my imagination or am I hearing a squeak from the bd pedal all the way through??? Either that or it's my tinnitus playing up!!! Keep up the brilliant work for the drumming community from one teacher to another!
Haha! You are totally right, Ross. I also heard that squeeky pedal. Couldn't believe they wouldn't have sorted that out in the studio?! Thanks for your kind support!
Hello Rob thanks for a great video. I'm not a drummer but have done lots of musical arranging for live shows as well as programming for some electronic keyboard manufacturers so I'm very used to dissecting music to this level. Something you said triggered a subject which I am keen to find out if you have covered and if you haven't would you cover it. You were taking about beat 2 and 4 on snare. I have played in bands where a drummer is keeping time 1 2 3 4 but for some reason the snare is DELAYED which makes the musical feel feel like the 8 beat pattern is travelling through treakle. Sort of driving a car at 30 constantly but applying the brake and accelerator at the same time. I would have written externally to this but don't know how to contact you directly.
Omg. “Stevie is sloppy” “He screws up here...” “He miss hit the drum.” “We’ll let him off the hook, because he’s blind” You DO realize your are going to hell for these atrocities right? Ok I’m (kinda) joking. Good lesson.
Haha,😂you are so funny by thinking a blind talented pianist coming up with this amazing funk patterns on drums is going to make a mistake and leave it in the record, it is obvious you are not familiar with soul funk off beat playing, it is about the feel in the song, even Jazz drummers do this..
Agree 100% just like Steve Wonder not a "drummer" as you stated he was a pianist and yet all "drummers" follow along his bits and groove, sometimes it takes a non drummer with fresh view to see and point your chinks clinks and holes on your armor..it's a good thing, if the ego let's it see it that way
Your content is great and you are some of the few that actually breaks down the songs almost perfect but you are not in a position to criticize assume and call out as a mistake one of the greatest blind musician, specially if you haven't recorded any hit records yourself, but as the old saying, if you can't do, you will only teach, so yes I understand your frustration

I honestly did not know Stevie played drums, too!
I know...amazing, right?!
This video helped me figure out how to play the fills. Now I can finally do a drum cover of it. Thanks very much 🙌
You're welcome, Jacob! :)
Was looking for a drum lesson for this song for band practice this week and this popped up! Great video helped a lot
Glad I could help, Tom!
Glad you did this so we haven't got to! ;) I think I'll approach this with an original feel - but with Stevie's influence!
I am a beginner drummer, and you do a great job teaching. It's helped me out a lot. Thank you
Thank you, Thomas. Glad I could help!

Hehe...thanks, Jim!
He's not even sloppy in the first part
You on tiktok?
Yes. Here you go... www.tiktok.com/@robertlitten
Isnt it weird how you can just tell the difference between a lick played one handed and the same like played two handed just by the feel?
It's also to do with certain notes being left handed when played double handed, but yes, sometimes you can tell just from the sound!
