That is a great trick if you are in the field and don't have the tools but I'm not sure why you would continue doing it this way if you have went to the trouble to build a jig to test the collimator and determined that's it's not perfectly aligned, why not do the next step and collimate the collimator. Pretty easy to do with the correct sized Allen tool for your collimator. It's likely either 5/64 or 2mm depending on the brand. Plenty of YT videos that show how to do it.
Wow, this really helped me so much with laser barlow trick! I was trying to do this with some paper cutout and I was having all kinds of issues. Didn't realize you could do this with Chessire. Thank you!!
I have watched soooo many different videos on how to collimate. Some using web cams and fancy software, etc. This is the first time I was able to use the information provided to get an accurate, effective (emphasis on effective) collimation. My laser is off just a tad so I followed all of these steps and guess what? I found out that I was off just a bit. I was getting "cross" stars in the center of my FOV with my 8" f3.9 Astrograph Reflector. I thought it was caused by astigmatism. Nope. It was because I was off just a tad on the collimation. My very "fast" 8" now gets pinpoint stars and I can split binaries. Thanks Dennis!
Thx for the tip. I'm fairly new at this and had just found out Laser Collimators aren't necessarily accurate. Saw your video, made a quick jig to test my collimator. Luckily, it was good. Thx again.
emgee65 It baffles me why the manufacturers of laser collimators seal the adjustment screws. I do believe that we should be able to easily collimate the collimators.
yes i had a lazer job i was so fed up of it i tossed in out in the trash, they should be lined up when there made not this messing around i just use the collimation cap works for me came with my orion xt6 dobsonion .. tnx jeff ..
There are so many variables here using a laser collimator that you'll almost never get proper collimation from it. Slop in the focuser draw tube between the collimator barrel and the focuser draw tube, whether or not the focuser is properly collimated and whether the laser itself is properly collimated. This technique is okay for visual but useless for imaging where collimation has to be almost perfect.
I'm the ownwer of a telescope that that, but i don't know if it's better a Chesire or a Laser. Orion people said to me that their colimation laser are always colimated, but i'm not sure.
im looking to buy my first telescope and was wondering if you could recommend a good one. my budget is around 300-400. which one would you say can see the furthest for that budget range? thanks
I have a xt8 plus dob. and i was trying your method of diffusing the laser dot. I see that you used a 2" barlow. i tried to use it with my 1.25" barlow but i can barely see the refection of the center spot. What am i doing wrong. Also what level brightness did you select on the collimator? by the way i own a skywatcher laser collimator.

+Dennis Zylstra Hello! I was wondering wether or not you still own the XT10G and if you do or don't could you help me out? I'm having the hardest time setting up my keypad, I'm confused and very much stuck.

Thanks Man.
Nice to see another Michigander !! Well, at least your shirt stated so :-) From Brighton, MI here.
Yes. The target area on the collimator should always be facing toward the primary so you can see what effect any adjustments you make may have.
Thank's a lot for this tip!! i was having the same problem with my laser collimator
I believe your collimator has 3 adjustment screws.
You can correct the accuracy of the collimator by adjusting them.
yup.

Nice trick with the barlow. A barlowed laser for collimating is the best method.
Clear Skies Dennis! :)
i havn't never see any ways easier than yours!good job! collimate the laser tool is awsome!
Thanks .....thats so cool.

Wow. Great tips. Exactly what i needed
Great video thank you for sharing
superb logic Dennis.

really nice and usefull, I tried and it works! thanks

Mine does not have the donute in the middle. How do I collimate mine?
Can I do the barlow technique without putting the paper and cardboard in the scope? Or is it nessecary ?
Yes ....But they should be done together. if the secondary not under the eye piece correctly it doesn't do as good a job. good luck
Great tip

m .kharraz it helps to dim the light in the room your doing it in.
if my 8" dob is not collimated, what seeing I am going to get for the moon for example.
thanks
It will look good. it will look better if it is properly collimated. I think it really helps most on stars and fainter planets.
Well Done, And Clear Skies!
+michael defrancesco Thanks
Your laser should not be making circles round the donut. If it’s spot on the laser dot shouldn’t move at all when rotating it in your focuser
Tthanks for your time. If you listen to the first 15 sec you will understand.
Thanks for the tips.

OK, thanks anyway. They weren't really much help :(
OK.

Why don’t you collimate your collimator?
You should . This is in case you have been too busy and haven't .
3.05 Arrow bodkins?
???
OK. Thanks
Yeah...um gee thanks Ian...!
just like bore sighting a rifle
Not the technique but purpose and they both use lasers
What
???
