I've spent 30 years looking for a recipe that replicated the bread and butter pudding my grandmother made. Growing up in England we ate a lot of of bread and butter pudding. This recipe is amazing, exactly the same as my grandmothers. Absolutely scrumptious!

Omg! This takes bread pudding to a new level! No, correct that. This is not the same thing as a bread pudding. This is completely different! I saw a comment below. They're correct. It's in a class all by itself. I went out on a limb & served this for brunch at my synagogue. I wish I show you a picture of it. Anyway, I received so many compliments that you would NOT believe it!

Oh my goodness.... how 😋 delicious!!!! I am 75 years old, but I remember very clearly that my mother used to make a version of your bread and butter but savory. She would butter the bread and add slices of cheese on each bread, then she would add the milk-cream-egg mixture. After it was cooked she would make a delicious bechamel with cheese to add it on top. She would call it her fake french soufflé.... it was absolutely delicious. Now that you reminded me of it, I will make it for my family's next luncheon. What is the difference between bread and butter pudding and bread pudding? Maybe that sounds like a stupid question but I am American and these types of dishes are not that popular here...not in LA anyway.@@unclemattscookerylessons

    • @unclemattscookerylessons

@@kellyottarson3810 Hi Kelly, in Britain we have this dessert bread and butter baked in a raw egg custard, we also have a cake called bread pudding which I've never made but it required soaking stale bread mixing with spices and sugar and baking. Not sure if it has egg but the end result is a heavy bread cake which is OKish but not lovely like this one.
I think in the States you call bread and butter pudding 'bread pudding' although I've seen variations, so it might be more regional?

I do love the "old fashioned" English puddings. Being out most of the day I find little time to make things properly! For my bread and butter pudding I go to the "reduced counter" at my s/market and if luck is on my side I can buy oldish/stale-ish hot cross buns. They make a nice b&b pudding. I well butter them and add sultanas...Well, that's how I do it...

I love bread pudding made with stale biscuits. (USA) is that a variation of this bread and butter pudding or something else all together. It’s made with a custard poorer in a pan, crumbled biscuits and raisins added and baked.

Hi Elli, when you refer to biscuits I think of cookies, we're separated by a common language aren't we?
I think you mean something like our scones which I think would work nicely in place of bread.
You can use any bread or pastry product that will absorb the raw custard, like croissants, brioche or even doughnuts, its a great way of utilising up ingredients. Thanks

Thank you for this recipe. I have been searching for it for a long time. Someone brought Klappertaart pudding a long long time ago at a Potluck get together, and I had asked for the recipe. She said that it is bread pudding, and you just add pieces of young coconuts between the bread pieces of both layers of bread . And eaten with custard. In Indonesia custard always accompanies puddings. As soon as I can go back to work, I am going to make this to celebrate the end of the coronavirus 19 Lockdown. The klappertaart still exists in Indonesia, espcially in North Sulawesi, but I just feel they are now too dry, and I do not think that it is served with custard any longer. The raisins are still in there. I do not live in Indonesia any longer, so I am not up to date on that. I am just going to use the frozen young coconut slices that I will buy from an Asian store. I can't hardly wait to try that---Thank you so much for the very in detailed explanations. I subscribed and also added a thumbsup.

It would be easier and quicker to butter the bread before you cut the crusts off and in half. I like the crusts on mine as they make a lovely crispy texture to the pudding.

Thanks for this reminder of a pudding i loved, all new leftover if any was booked for me. We did it slightly different in South Africa by spreading smooth apricot jam onto buttered bread or if you didn’t want it too sweet putting teaspoons full here and there when the egg had been absorbed slightly on top we sprinkle a 10 to 1 mix of sugar and cinnamon before baking. Now I’m drooling, will have to make it for the Spanish side of the family especially my grandson.

Going 'round in a circle is just To draw attention to the growing glory of cutting into it. I've never had custard with it, though. I think I'll stick to making more baked custard in a deeper pan with the bread. It's the cream brulee effect that I like, despite being a lushious custard fan, especially using your ingredients and method.

Creme brulee is Definately more difficult as the cooking temp must be so much lower, so yeah you should find this one easier.
      But hopefully just as lovely?

I got given a Pantone for Christmas and it is in my larder taking up room. Do you think that for one time only - just to get rid of it - I could use it for a bread and butter pudding? i was just talking to a friend about ''back in the day"" bread and butter pudding.
And here you are with this wonderful demonstration.
only one thing.. I was a little surprised you did not include the crusts..
I always remember the extra, different flavour boost with the crust.
It was fantastic to see the ''savoury version'' added in the comments from the 75 years old lady.
That sounded scrumptious. I will definitely be giving that a whirl.

Really enjoyed watching the Bread an Butter pudding video. Uncle Matt made it seem like even I could make that custard and I'm going to try for our next Zydeco party. Bread pudding is a favorite amongst the fans of both types of Louisiana's French music, but it's made differently. I'm willing to take the risk and bring this kind. Looks and seems totally yummy!
