  • In my new instructional video series, "Off The Record" I teach you how to play guitar parts of great songs as they are played by the artist. In my latest video I teach the intro to Rhymes and Reasons by John Denver on the 12-string guitar. I put in a lot of detail, including how to finger pick in the Travis style as it's the underlying pattern in the intro, the entire song, and the bulk of John's excellent playing.
    Please comment, like, subscribe and most of all break out of your guitar playing rut. In the words of John (signed on my book he wrote) "Thanks for listening!"

    I have seen hundreds of videos on UA-cam of people trying to recreate the music in this song and all of them have failed miserably. You are the only person who has managed to perfectly pull this off song which is a huge achievement. You should really be proud of yourself for pulling this off

    Creatively; John was at his best with his first band. His guitar playing was more intricate and interesting. After Elvis' band joined him, an enormous amount of his guitar playing originality was lost. Thank you so much for the instruction.

    • @gLustig60
      @gLustig60  2 місяці тому

      Agreed. Mike Taylor was his first guitar player. However, Steve Weissberg was an incredible guitar player and added richness and nuance to everything he played on. Check out the "definitive" recordings of Calypso and Annie's Song without the orchestra. It's brilliant! The Elvis band stuff was a bad choice. I stopped listening at that point. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I have always thought about this introduction and which has a real "sublime and heavenly sound" to it, especially with that G5 note coming in towards the end. All combined together, what wisdom! Kind of reminds me of God's scheme of things where people, like musical notes, have all their peculiar places in the overall scheme of things and which makes our world a more pleasant place.

    Hey Gordon. Excellent video, I would really love a video on the entire song if you would be so kind. John was my favorite artist and strongly influenced me in my career joice, and R&R is one of my favorite. Wild Montana SKies is another one that might be good to do (hint, hint). Thanks for the video.

    Hi Gordon, I really liked how you taught this intro. Starting with the Travis picking and showing 1 chord shape at a time. Others never took it this slow. Like to see the rest of the song. Like to learn John's song Matthew. Can not find John's intro and his fill pattern. Thank's a bunch. Robert

      Hi Robert, thanks for writing! I'm glad you found this video useful. I would say my two favorite John Denver songs are Matthew and Rhymes and Reasons. I will do a video on the rest of R & R soon, but since you asked about Matthew, specifically the intro, I'll do that first. I've been wanting a new project. Peace!

    Thanks for uploading. If you have time come watch my cover of Dan and Shay - I'm a singer-songwriter and think you might dig my sound. Really appreciate it!
