Parasite (2019) cleaned house at Oscars, winning multiple awards with a parable of social inequality. Beyond the exquisite directing and cinematography, the Parasite script is also worth appreciating. Not only does it follow (and subvert) classic story structure, co-writers Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won managed to weave in complex and nuanced themes. The end result is a surprising, evocative and ground-breaking story. In this Parasite video essay, we’re going to map out the 15 story beats of the Parasite script using Blake Snyder’s Save the Cat beat sheet.
To have the Parasite movie explained, we can turn to the Save the Cat story beats. In the “Opening Image,” we get our first glimpse of the Kim family’s impoverished life in a sub-basement. Most pro-actively trying to pull his family out of this less-than-ideal existence is the son, Ki-woo. He believes that with hard work and ingenuity, upward mobility is possible. This is the “Theme Stated” beat, and we follow the Kims, led by Ki-woo, in their pursuit of this goal.
And then, the “Catalyst” that kicks the plot into motion. Ki-woo’s friend, Min, offers him an opportunity to take over as a tutor for the wealthy Park family. After initial doubts (the “Debate”), Ki-woo fabricates a resume and lands the job - and a new plan is formed. During the “Fun and Games” beat, Ki-woo’s father, mother and sister all procure jobs working for the Parks. Just as the Kims believe they have arrived at their new and comfortable life, the “Midpoint” flips their dreams and the direction of the story.
Moon-gwang, the Parks’ former housekeeper, returns to the house while the Kims celebrate. Unbeknownst to anyone, she has been harboring her husband in the Parks’ basement. A literal slip up puts the Kims at the mercy of Moon-gwang, and puts their chances of success at their lowest (“All is Lost”). In the following story beats in the Parasite script, the Kims’ subterranean house is flooded but even when Ki-woo’s father questions the idea of “having a plan,” Ki-woo doubles down and hatches a new plan.
The climax (“Finale”) of Parasite is a birthday party massacre leaving Ki-woo’s sister and Moon-gwang’s husband dead, while Mr. Park is killed by Ki-woo’s father. With his father hiding in the same basement under the Park’s house, and despite everything that’s happened, Ki-woo still stubbornly holds onto his belief that he can one day afford to legitimately buy the Park house and rescue his father.
The Parasite movie explained in these story beats allows for screenwriters to see how useful a formula like the Save the Cat beat sheet can be. Of course, Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won were also able to subvert traditional story structure with an ending that is both poignant and unexpected.

Where can we download or find the interface used by Studio Binder to analyze the Save the Cat beat sheet? I mean the interface that we can see on the screen. (Not the beat sheet)
Basic Instinct 1992
i guess it is quite randomly asking but does anybody know of a good site to stream new movies online?
@Tony Sutton Flixportal :P
@Creed Brooks thank you, I went there and it seems to work =) I really appreciate it !!
there really is no other channel like this one, it's a treasure for future and established filmmakers
That's the goal!
@@StudioBinder We keep coming back! Keep up the amazing work!
I dont even make movies myself I just love watching and analyzing them so I try to learn as much as possible
@@StudioBinder your explanation is far away better than any other channels but I request you to elaborate why Kim ki taek killed Mr Park ??
You know a movie is so good that even after 2 years studiobinder still does a fresh breakdown on it
Oh right, Jesus it was 2 years ago
What are you talking about.....2 years isnt that long at all, especially considering they have done videos on movies 50+ years old.
@@avidadolares You're right, but from what I've seen, modern movies rarely get talked about as much as this one is- especially with the massive amount of films being put out and being regurgitated every year. Films 50+ years ago are considered classics atleast, and they're arguably the first ones to do anything in their respective genres. Parasite is up there and is studied now as a modern classic despite its sheer number of competitors, that's why I think it's so impressive.
I was more talking about how this movie feels like it just came out, but it’s been 2 years
It was a must :D
This is one of the most visually metophorical film.

Bong Joon-Ho is such an underrated screenwriter, Memories Of Murder is another example of great storytelling
Mother is a personal favorite
Sorry, but someone who has an Oscar for best original screenplay can't be called underrated.
Oh, god no. He has been considered to be one of the greatest directors/ screenwriters in South Korea for a long time even before Parasite.
@@niamh3875 In Asia* not just Korea and by anyone who watches international cinema...so like the rest of the world outside the US and people who don't just watch Marvel movies lol. They've been teaching him in film schools for over a decade.
Before Parasite, I never knew that you could deviate - even slightly - from specific beats. The film truly deserved those 4 Oscars.
Rules were made to be broken, but only by the masters ;)
I never even took those beats into account when writing. No author is beholden to someone else's rules.
If more screenwriters knew that the Save the Cat beat sheets can be deviated or changed, then we'd have better movies.
@@canaisyoung3601 We'd have MORE good movies.
@@leonmayne797 I get that. I felt the same way at some point but stories actually do naturally follow a certain structure if you want a clear sense of beginning, middle and end. I think many of the people who trademarked these structures (which are really all the same) don’t just decide them- it’s more like they’ve observed them. Even the simplest of actions can contain all of the story beats if you look for them. They may not be that dramatic but the art of screenwriting specifically is to amplify and dramatize the story beats that a character’s story (their growth or their resistance to growth) naturally provides.

One of the best movies I watched in the last month.
Well worth the watch 👌
Great video; these people always b making em. And this movies' last dream sequence is a strong tear jerker. Straight up. I think he's gonna make it. But literally everything is stacked against him and he's in a worse position than before. That's the making of a hero man. Hes got a new refined plan and will use his skill for good rather than lying to the top.🦍🦍🦍🤝👽✊🏽
Definitely a possibility, but I feel like the closing image implied a less than hopeful future
That's not the point of the film lol. The beginning is his "could be a hero" moment, the end is "This is what actually happens." Poor people don't get to the top with a 'good plan' and no amount of skill can change that...they were all skilled and they all ended up screwed.
Thanks a lot

I was talking to a well-known director and writer of screenplays and he is the only person I have met (apart from myself of course!) who actually admitted to reading 'Save The Cat' by Blake Snyder. It is the book that nobody admits to reading, but every scriptwriter has heard of!
If you want to write a script that people will actually want to read and even make a movie out of the damn thing, read this book - and lend it to nobody!
Every great story, from The New Testament to Pinocchio, from Lord of the Rings to The Case of the Restless Redhead, follows the 'Save The Cat' structure. That structure has been hiding in plain sight for millennia - Snyder is the first to systematically show how the three-act structure and the ten basic types of story actually hang together in 15 'beats'.
There are other books on scriptwriting and I think I have them all - and with the golden exception of 'How NOT to Write a Screenplay' by Denny Martin Flinn - suck totally. I kid you not!
Those two books are all you need. The others will only confuse you with irrelevant theories and senseless themes.
Definitely, Snyder didn't create the structure so much as discovered it. Similar to the Hero's Journey
thank you
Superb work. Love and support from Pakistan 🇵🇰. 👍👍👌👌
