  • The Ball Factory from Akiyuki is without doubt the most iconic LEGO Great Ball Contraption and has drawn many into building GBCs including me 3 years ago. With 15 synchronized components the Ball Factory is also the most complex LEGO GBC ever designed.
Originally placed on two big baseplates, it was hard to relocate and reliability was a concern with balls dropping into the complex mechanisms causing jams and need for time consuming resynchronizing.
After 3 years of designing and building my own GBCs I thought it was time to attempt building the Ball Factory as a fully compliant and reliable GBC to take to events. To achieve this I've put all components on a frame and used studless beams for more rigidity. Together with other improvements this resulted in this new style and GBC compliant Ball Factory with much improved reliability.

I like how everything that can be counter-weighted is counter-weighted and how smooth it is.

Cool! I like how you can run it so fast, it looks and sounds awesome at full speed! I like how you built it so the center can come out too.

We did a seven-module loop at work for "Take Your Child to Work Day." It was a big hit with the kid (and the Lego enthusiasts on staff). I would consider building this one for next year. I think it would make the kids pretty excited. Most of what we do on the power system is not very understandable to the younger kids. They got enthusiastic about the mechanisms though. Thank you for sharing this and making improvements!

Very nice improvements! Also the attention to detail is absolutely amazing! No single stud is shown! :)

Berthil, I think you've done a wonderful job.
In her day she built the ball factory and took it to a fair where it worked during the weekend, but
I think I'm going to have to do it again, but with your great design.
    Greetings Fernando.

    Hi berthil
I‘ve just finished recreating your MOC and I have a problem with the spiral lift:
The balls constantly get stuck at the pickup.
In your instructions there are some exposed studs right at that area, I think the instructions are missing something!
Is it possible for you to explain me what is supposed to go there or what might be the problem?

    Great~!!
I have finally finished this module.
Soon I will upload the video.
Your instruction has fatal errors, so I almost gave up. For other builders, the instruction needs to be modified correctly.
    Thank you for your efforts.
    Many thanks and best regards.

So let me know the errors so I can correct. Please make sure you compare with the latest versions of the building instruction because there have been many updates according to feedback of others.

Very smooth operation, well done on the build! The hand crank is a really good idea as it would make getting the timing right a lot easier. It handled the high speeds really well.

The biggest issue I can see attempting this would have been maintaining all the correct distances between the mechanisms/getting all the holes in the right postions.
Bravo on the the Ball loader redesign that looks so much easier to build (and repair) than the original brick version whilst still be mechanically the same.
Love that it looks like you kept the original gearing on the long conveyor as that seems to be the thing many people change.
    The output is fantastic.
One question are you able to disconnect the loader side from the rest of the mechanism for even easier travel?

    • @BerthilvanBeek
      @BerthilvanBeek  5 років тому

Thanks! The loader can ben easily disconnected for travel although not so intended, it's more a side effect of being studless.
