Excellent. I'd forgotten this box. My friend was the one who ran Ravenloft (I6 onwards), so I do remember the box residing on one of his shelves at least four house moves ago! Back then we we'd become quite lukewarm on D&D, instead playing the first run of World of Darkness games, Kult, The Whispering Vault and (always) Cthulhu.
A myrmidon is a soldier that follows orders blindly. In myth they were the personal warband of Achilles and descended from ants transformed into humans by Zeus.
Great over-view of the Ravenloft series. I like the background music as well in this video. Any Call of Cthulhu or Delta Green reviews for Halloween Month? 👻
This box set was my introduction to Ravenloft, so it will always have a place in my heart. I still think the golden age of Ravenloft was the 3rd edition stuff printed by White Wolf. Especially the Gazetteers which are strangely hard to get these days. (A lot of the 3rd edition books are strangely not on Drivthrurpg.)
Yep this box was mine too. I can remember getting it. We had been up all night playing the intro to 2nd Ad&D box and theres a haunted house adventure in there and we liked the horror so all went down to the game store (still without sleep) and picked this up. Ive never looked into the White Wolf stuff, Iwill try to track some down
The White Wolf published sourcebooks are mostly really good. But they have very few of them up on Drivethrurpg. Just the main setting books and like two sourcebooks.. (Actually the two worst sourcebooks of that era strangely.) But you definitely want to seek out the 5 Gazetteers, Legacy of Blood, The Van Richtens Guide to The Walking Dead, Mists, and Shadow Fey, and Dark Tales & Disturbing Legends.
This was a slightly painful walk down memory lane for me. I had ALL this stuff + most Ravenloft publications. This set was by far as good as it got. It all slid downhill by about 2000 till it was a shadow of its former self. If the 'Bros were smart, they'd reproduce as much of this art and content as faithfully as possible because it was never this good again. Ravenloft was sadly run into the ground over 15 years or so, a cycle we're doomed to witness over and over if we live long enough, very much in keeping with the setting. Thank you! I'll love this setting till I'm gone! 👍
Sadly I never got my hands on the old dnd stuff but ever since I received my copy of the guide to ravenloft I fell in love with the setting in a way I didn't with any other 5e setting. Even made my own hombrew realm of terror set in a dark empire inspired by the napoleonic wars era Austria. With 2 dark lords being Kaisar Franz Shadanvalker and his ambitious son Voss Shadenvalker. I'd love to find the other ravenloft books to maby have ideas to expand upon the dark empire of Dunsrich.
Ad&Dragons 1st edition with some Oriental Adventures upgrades to proficiencies running the original Ravenloft is perfect providing you have a human party. Different races do not blend well in this campaign.
I have never played DnD but I have been interested in Ravenloft since I was about 8 years old, 24 now. I found out about it from the old Playstation 1 game. Fast forward to now I have almost all the novels, and I really want to play Curse of Strahd…but nobody to play with and I need to learn how to play lol
Excellent.

But wait...why is Sturm Brightblade wearing slacks and Beatle boots in that "Dragon Magazine" ad?! 😂🤣😂 16:06 Nevermind...the 1980's.
Haha

His backpack would just be his mobile phone!

Ah thanks. Learn something new every day
Bought these and never played. Thanks for the review. Maybe now I will run it for my wife. She loves vampires.

Thanks. Unfortunately I didn't have anything planned but I may try to do a small extra vid

Glad the video was an enjoyable walk down memory lane

I can totally understand that. And just when you get used to those quirks they change everything again
