If you haven't seen the classic Minnie the Moocher with Cab Callaway's rotoscoped dancing, I suggest you check it out. I'm pretty sure this scene is partly an homage to it
It would be so fun to dress up as the highway man for Halloween and then when you go trick or treating people say, "and who are you, sweetie?" and you say, "I'm the highway man. I make ends meet. Just like any man, I work with my hands. If you cross my path...I'll knock you out. drag you off the road. steal your shoes from off your feet. My favorite thing about the Highwayman (other than the awesome song and dance) is how completely abrupt and unsolicited his scene is. He's just like "What? I'm a criminal; I don't gotta follow your damn rules. I'll steal your animation budget too, sucker."
Fun Fact! The Voice actor and singer for highway man is a Blues player by the name of Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton. ok this is so cool! I think it's so cool that you got to do this for the series, and for the company! I remember watching this part and following the smooth movements in awe; it's so cool that I now know who specifically did this part! it's so cool to watch it with the rough movements and the cleaned-up version right after!
This is such a great homage to Cab Calloway bits from some of the Fleischer shorts! I got a chance to see the whole series! Very well done! Congratulations to you and the rest of your team!
I rewarched this recently and it reminded me of koko the clown/ghost in that betty boop cartoon and i didnt know if it was a purposeful homage or just a coincidence!!
I am - like - fangirling so hard over this right now. This is exactly the kind of animation I want to do when I get out of college. Heck, why wait? This is so inspiring to me. It's a nice reassurance that 2D animation isn't dead, it's just struggling to be integrated in CGI. ^_^

I love the way it is animated. Such sudden changes in size of bodyparts are a pleasure to watch but you don't see them very often in morednr day animation.
This is really cool and im surprised im just now watching it! I actually thought for years that James Baxter must have worked on this part or something, so that just goes to show you that you did an amazing job in this scene
Seeing how rough the animation process is gives me motivation to work on my own animated project. It's like... it can look like utter scribbles in the beginning and still turn out decently
This is one of my favorite scenes in the show! Specially because of the fluidity of the animation. This scene in particular reminded me of old Betty Boop cartoons with the rotoscoping effects involved. I kept thinking of scenes based off of Cab Calloway. What I love about this series is its older cartoon inspiration, and overwhelming charm! I love this show so much, I really hope to someday create something with half the heart that this show has! It truly deserves so much love!
What I find most impressive is how each of all those steps is one point you can say “this looks bad, I should stop”. There’s people with confidence in their skills I heard.
You're an inspiration Nick, truly. I'm an artist, and me included I'm sure there are tons of artists who really look up to you. Really awesome stuff. This was one of the most bizarre animation sequences for me when watching the show, I thought it might've been rotoscoped somehow until I saw the proportions change and morph. Very strange to look at, but definitely not in a bad way.
im in love with this animation and song, super surprised to find out it wasn't rotoscoped! reminds me so much of the rotoscoping of Cab Calloway in Minnie the Moocher
I watch this scene at least once a month because of the music and the animation and today I just found this video. This is so cool!! Thanks for sharing the process!

Congratulations Nick!, all my admiration. P.S: Did you use any reference video for the dancing?, at first I even believed it was rotoscoped, but after watching this I'm just more blown away
Thanks. No I didn't use any reference. Just Pat's board posing and the beat of the musical track to help get the timing. I tried to make it look like it was rotoscoped by animating it on 1's …there is no good reason other than that for it being done that way.
Nick Cross It certainly has that Fleischer cartoon vibe to it. With the music also reminiscent of Minnie the Moocher in style, too, it's pretty uncanny. Fantastic job.
Awesome! Over the Garden Wall really is something else and the Highwayman scene if by far my favorite 30 seconds. The way he moves is just tantalizing. Fantastic.

My new favorite saying.
this was a small part, but it really stood out to me
Reason why it stood out is because it was animated at a higher quality than the rest of the show. Just a cool tidbit I thought you'd enjoy
Probably because rotoscoping gives a weird sense that resonates with people.
OverTheGardenWall 5 this clip wasn’t rotoscoped, which is even more incredible
