Hey guys its really great seeing some nice comments on here, thank you all for the love. Here is a bonus fact that I couldn’t add in the video because it was already over 18 mins long. The character Selena may not be as original as we thought, in 1953 in the Adventures of Superman TV series with George Reeves there was an episode called Mystery in Wax and it focused on a character called Selena, who just like the Supergirl Selena is a sort of Witch character dabbling in sorcery as she creates wax statues of people and those who she makes statues of then die, it’s actually a very dark and grisly episode. I remember watching the episode as a kid and the first thing I thought was “wow this is like a prototype for the Supergirl Selena”. Anyway take care peeps
Just like Christopher Reeve Helen Slater was the perfect casting for the role of Supergirl. It's a travesty we never got a Superman/Supergirl movie with these 2 .
They were going to have SG in Superman 3, but then a lot of production troubles started brewing like the writing with SG falling for SM and braniac being her father.
So it seems like this movie was bad for 2 main reasons: 1- The idea to make this more of a witchcraft story than a space/sci-fi story 2- Everyone abandoned the project: Chris.Reeve, Warner Bros, Demi Moore, John Travolta, leaving plot and talent holes.
I love that you admit movies "have their problems" but still push through looking for the good in them. Very positive and very different than many creators. 👍
Nothing guilty about it; despite plot holes, it was fun and entertaining, Slater hits it out of the park as Supergirl, soundtrack is great, and, it had rich and colorful production values. It complimented the Christopher Reeves Superman movies well.
Damn right, Helen was one of the best parts of this movie! She nailed her role perfectly. Any flaws with her performance are due to writing and directing issues.
I always feel bad for actors and actresses who clearly put their hearts into a role, only to have the script/direction/studio fail them. Helen is clearly putting her all into her performance and no on else involved seems to be doing the same.
Fun Fact: Helen Slater would go on to play Clark Kent's biological mother Lara in Smallville and Kara Danvers foster mother, Eliza Danvers, in the Arrowverse series, Supergirl.

I was a teen when this movie came out. What attracted me to it was Helen Slater's performance and Faye Dunaway's character. It was nice to see a battle of wits and strength between two strong women who could hold their own and not have to wait helplessly for a man to rescue them. Yes, Slater's character was assisted by Peter O'Toole's character in the phantom zone, but she was also assisting him until he sacrificed himself. It was refreshing to watch at the time. I liked the movie back then despite its plot and dodgy effects. I still want to watch it again when it becomes available. Good video, Minty. 👍
Definitely so. But I hated that Supergirl and Selina spent most of their time fighting over a boy. That seemed to diminish them to me. I wish they had given Helen another shot at the character, in a better movie.
@@JStrange13 I can definitely see your viewpoint. I just wonder if Supergirl's motive was more toward protection of an innocent and less romantic (at least initially) and Selena's motive was more toward power and enslavement rather than fighting a rival for the affections of a man. Still, you made a valid argument, and this movie reflects the attitudes of our society back in 1984.
Quest For Peace had some good stuff: 1. Mariel Hemingway's performance,2.Birth of Nuclear Man,3. Gene Hackman's return,4. Jon Cryer as Lenny. It still needed a rewrite though it's a guilty pleasure of mine.
@@rbswords2353 There is a story behind all the problems with "Superman IV". I am going to "do a Minty" and tell you about a fact. "Superman IV:The Quest For Peace" struggled because not enough money was given to it. SMIV was distributed by Cannon Films. The Salkinds lost the rights to Superman by then, and CF got them instead. CF was a small studio who wanted to get rich by making blockbusters, but they would do them on the cheap. They had the idea to make three films at once, and spread the budget between all three, thinking that if they did multiple films at once, they would have one at least be a hit. They made "Cyborg" (a Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi film), "Superman IV", and their crown jewel "Masters Of The Universe" (based on the Marvel action figure range and cartoon series, which was huge in the 80's), dedicating the majority of the budget to "Masters" , and "SMIV" and "Cyborg" got the rest. They effectively spend the budget of ONE film across three films instead. But people want quality, and all THREE films tanked, as the poor production values were on show to see. Cannon Films were hoping to make lots of money off the films, and were talking about doing a "Spiderman" film, but all three films were bombs, and Cannon folded soon after.
I absolutely adore this film. The international edition is about 30 minutes longer than the U.S. theatrical cut and makes a lot more sense. Helen Slater is amazing! Minty, please do The Legend of Billie Jean.
I will always have major love for Supergirl because as an 80s kid this movie blew my little mind having a female Superman, an interconnected world where there were others out there like Superman and there were other movies out there telling their stories. Little did I know...
Helen Slater was reccuring character on the new TV version of SUPERGIRL,playing Kara's mom,and that one original movie poster looks more like a raised metal lunch box cover from the 70's-80's.
I think it is great that he earns his money, and keeps giving us new content. Some other UA-camrs could learn from it, instead of just producing a video once every six months.
First “girlie” poster I ever had was of Helen Slater as Supergirl. I was ten years old and in love! I had (still have) the storybook, collected the cards, had the coloring books, got any Supergirl merch I could get my hands on. Never saw the movie in the theater!
I loved to watch Helen Slater as Supergirl and by far as I am concerned, is the most beautiful Supergirl to ever don the cape. Faye Dunaway was awesome as Selena too
Connecting the fantasy-themed Supergirl movie to other fantasy-themed movies at the time was an inspired observation on your part. The only cringe-worthy aspects I have with the Supergirl movie were Selena chasing after Ethan and the strange witch stuff. However, the casting was great and the music should have won an Oscar. The Argo City and Phantom Zone sets were out of this world (pun intended). I would take this movie over the formulaic superhero movies today anytime. P.S. I also like how the special effects crew back in the day had to get creative to make the effects a reality. Today they just plug some generic stuff in on a computer.
I loved that movie. My parents took me to go see it when it came out. I was four and I remember jumping around the house trying to fly like her from couch to chair to couch.
As a kid I was always happy to watch "SuperGirl." It was great that the movie was shown, however minimally, that it was connected to the rest of the Superman series. Also, it didn't hurt that SuperGirl (Helen Slater) was/is absolutely stunning. Despite the flaws of "SuperGirl," the film has one other incredible, redeeming feature.....it's not "Superman Returns." ;-}
@@Neville60001 Really? First time I've ever heard that. Possibly a generation thing. When the movie came out and for years afterwards, I never heard anyone say they liked it. But, I think because so many didn't like that it tried to pick up from the Christopher Reeves series and failed. As a stand alone movie, maybe it was better appreciated by a newer audience. Similar to how the Star Wars prequels are better liked by younger audiences. ;-)
Superman returns lacked action and excitement. It was a pretty boring movie. It seemed like a homework assignment that was done at the last minute just to get a passing grade.
@@gregrowe1168 I'd have to agree. I've also heard (and agree with) that there was way to much focus on the relationship between Superman & Lois Lane which further dragged the movie.
@@skyden24195, and yet, people are now praising it (again) retrospectively as being better than _Man Of Steel_ , which had all of the action in it that detractors of _Superman Returns_ craved.
A: she was PERFECT in the role. Even today she can't look better as supergirl, 2: yeah the movie was flawed, but it was a superhero movie in the 80's, and D: Popeyes sure has come a long way.
@C J It's an entertaining film. The plot holes, now that I know why they're there, aren't deal breakers. It's not as good as the first 3 Reeves movies, but, it's not far behind, and, it is better than the 4th one.
I love the poster of Supergirl flying next to The Statue Of Liberty. Doesn’t REALLY make sense, but I just accepted it as iconic as a child. Classically, Superman does “…fight for truth, justice, and The American Way.” Maybe that’s the sort of feeling they were going for with that poster.
I fell in love with her in this as a young boy... And never stopped! 😂 Actually watched this again last month, it has some great moments and I love the score
Yep - I dispute the commentator's claim that this is considered "one of the worst superhero films". I've been a genre fan and was a Starlog subscriber most of my life and I have NEVER heard this claim. In fact I'd say the opposite, this movie is a rare hidden little gem. Sure it has technical issues and I'd say in general, its major sin was having a reach that exceeded its grasp. I'd rather a movie push and try to do more and different than be the same cookie cutter nonsense we always get.
I wonder if Mark or minty lives under a desk, after the end of each video he hunches down there. And the actress who played supergirl is a super hottie
I saw this film in the theater when I was a kid (yes, I’m old) and I absolutely loved it! Whenever it played on TV I made my family watch it. I thought it was so much fun and thought Helen Slater was beautiful!
10. Henry Cavill was in the running for the lead role. He was passed over for Brandon Routh, since Brandon looked more like Christopher Reeve. 9. Despite grossing $400,000,000 worldwide, the film was panned by critics and audiences. They thought (for some reason) that they were going to get a superhero action movie but got a big budget chick flick instead. 8. The video game tie-in provides an interesting plot element that the movie lacks. When we learn that Superman left Earth because astronomers had thought that they had found Krypton, Lex Luthor, during the confrontational scene, reveals that he was the one who planted that story in order to get Superman off planet, as Lex couldn't get anything done while the Big Blue Boy Scout was around. 7. The truck that Martha drives in the beginning of the film is the same one from _Superman: The Movie._ 6. People always complain that Routh's Superman never throws a single punch, a gripe that is suspiciously lacking when they talk about _Superman: The Movie._ 5. Noel Neill and Jack Larson, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen from _Adventures of Superman,_ have cameo scenes. Noel plays the widow Lex swindled and Jack plays the barman. 4. Superman's costume was one big vanity project, as the emblem can be seen everywhere on it from tiny reflectors on the material to the rubber boot soles. 3. The emblem is missing from the cape, a trend that started with _Superman: The Animated Series_ and sadly continues to this day. 2. Superman being Jesus is really hammered home in this movie. Not only is he mentioned as a savior, but he also catches a sign that reads GRACE as well as dies and returns from the dead...not to mention the T-pose he strikes when falling back to Earth from sending the kryptonite continent into space, a pose that I only noticed after my fifth viewing because I was always too distracted by how fake the cape looked. 1. Martha was originally going to have a boyfriend to reinforce the fact that the world had moved on. These scenes were filmed but removed from the release cut for whatever reason. However, you can still find the boyfriend in the crowd scene outside the hospital. When the camera shows Martha among the masses, you'll see a guy to her right who's wearing glasses if you look closely and quickly enough. That's him.
Cavill was a complete unknown then. But the same could be said for reeve. He originally was rejected because he was too skinny. He bulked up and got the part.
Super Girl for sure had a train wreck of a script, and production that failed at the box office, but it is indeed an important piece of 80's super hero culture.
I think he knew how bad this was going to be but yes Superman 3 and 4 weren't exactly masterpieces. I really wonder if he hadn't had his accident if there would have been another movie with him in it.
Thanks for doing this one Minty! I totally get where there are some plot probs and the school scenes even bored me as a kid, but I love it. Faye Dunaway and Helen Slater were both amazing! Can't get enough of Brenda Vaccaro's sultry voice also. She was great in Paper Dolls later that year. I did get to meet Helen and she was kind enough to sign my Legend Of Billie Jean poster and I gushed over these two movies, Ruthless People and Secret of my Success. Every movie she made was so great actually. Sticky Fingers was on HBO all the time in the 80's and Happy Together with Patrick Dempsey was great too. Neither have gotten proper blu ray treatment either.
I loved Supergirl! I dragged all my Friends (12 people) to see it on opening night. They didn't understand it but because I also read both Supergirl and all Superman comics at the time it matched the combined story elements. I saw it 5 more times in the theatre before it left theatres. I was alone in the theatre in many of the screenings. I still to this day LOVE this movie. It also helped that I lived in Chicago at the time and worked near many of her Chicago flight path.
Fun fact in Pink Floyd’s The Wall movie when Bob Geldof has to float in a swimming pool of blood the crew at pinewood attempted to use Reeves flying rig but it was too big, and much to Geldof’s humiliation Helen Slater’s fly rig fit him perfectly.
I enjoyed this movie as a kid. Now that he did this one. Now you could do the Legend of Billie Jean. No mention of Supergirl the TV show that's shocking to me. I enjoyed this video.
Thank you for reviewing this movie! It mesmerized me as a teenager and it gave me some pretty damned good dreams about flying with Supergirl in that wicked bumper car... I recently watched it on the internet and it took me back to that wonderful and magical era that was the 80s.
I too loved this movie as a kid and still return to it when I crave a dose of escapism! The flying scenes are beautiful, especially the first one where she discovers she can fly. The score is amazing and I personally revel in its cheesy fairytaleness! It's very much a marmite film and I'm proud to say it's one of my favourites.
The flight scene in "Wonder Woman 1984" (2020) is reminiscent of that - in a good way. I bet the director put it in on purpose, to pay tribute to "Supergirl" (1984).
Can you imagine if they had gone with the spaceage/sci-fi-adventure style with a script good enough to have included Christopher Reeve? That would have been amazing. It’s a shame we never got to see the two of them, Superman and Supergirl on the big screen together. Credit to the filmmakers for trying something different though. She was an incredible Supergirl.

Look it's a Bird... It's a Plane... no it's a Minty video!!😁
Not as bad as "The Quest for Peace".
So true. I'd rather watch this movie than Quest for peace!
So true!
I absolutely adore this film. The international edition is about 30 minutes longer than the U.S. theatrical cut and makes a lot more sense. Helen Slater is amazing! Minty, please do The Legend of Billie Jean.
This was one of my favorites as a teen...
Supergirl is Super Awesome. I genuinly loved this movie back in the days... And I still do☺ I was so in love With Helen Slater❤
"The Map" is just a sensational piece of the score. WOW. Still gives me chills today :)
I have great nostalgic love for this movie.
My Nine year old self was in LOOOVE with SuperGirl... Big Time!
I AM SO HAPPY YOU COVERED THE DVD RELEASE “S” DEBACLE! I hated the returns logo on the front!! Hahaha
I will always have major love for Supergirl because as an 80s kid this movie blew my little mind having a female Superman, an interconnected world where there were others out there like Superman and there were other movies out there telling their stories. Little did I know...
Went to the movie to see this with my mother back when I was a kid. So so many nightmares and so many years of child therapy.
I really need to watch this movie, I’ve only seen bits and pieces of it. The ending fight where she went into a tornado that always gives me chills.
Those phantom zones shatter so easily.
Parts of "Avengers:Infinity War" were actually shot in Edinburgh, Scotland
Surprisingly, SG was a big hit here in Manila during its 1985 theatrical release.
Peter Cook... no mention... like superman missing from the film. 'This bloke came up to me and said, "hello" '
@Daniel Appleton Nope. He played Nigel.
Helen Slater was reccuring character on the new TV version of SUPERGIRL,playing Kara's mom,and that one original movie poster looks more like a raised metal lunch box cover from the 70's-80's.
Used to love watching this movie as a kid growing up in the 80’s
I think it is great that he earns his money, and keeps giving us new content.
Some other UA-camrs could learn from it, instead of just producing a video once every six months.
I really loved this film as a kid ❤
I find it amusing she was playing Ma Kent in "DC Superhero Girls with Dean Cain as Pa Kent. 😁
and both show up as the Danvers parents (but only in minor/cameos, not full time cast) in the WB Supergirl series (Melissa Benoist series).
First “girlie” poster I ever had was of Helen Slater as Supergirl. I was ten years old and in love! I had (still have) the storybook, collected the cards, had the coloring books, got any Supergirl merch I could get my hands on. Never saw the movie in the theater!
Nice timing. I watched this one last week.
ua-cam.com/video/xV_uLaf1-pg/v-deo.html
As a kid I was always happy to watch "SuperGirl." It was great that the movie was shown, however minimally, that it was connected to the rest of the Superman series. Also, it didn't hurt that SuperGirl (Helen Slater) was/is absolutely stunning.
Despite the flaws of "SuperGirl," the film has one other incredible, redeeming feature.....it's not "Superman Returns." ;-}
Yet, _Superman Returns_ is loved by a lot of people, putting you in the minority.
I had a massive crush on Helen Slater when I was a kid!!! Even now she is still so beautiful!
A: she was PERFECT in the role. Even today she can't look better as supergirl, 2: yeah the movie was flawed, but it was a superhero movie in the 80's, and D: Popeyes sure has come a long way.
I still haven't tried that chicken sandwich from Popeyes that everybody was so crazy about
I’ve never seen this movie, not that I can remember at least but this was another great video Minty. It made me want to go see SuperGirl now.
The way minty gets into the movies he does has returned me to when the world seemed unlimited and o have went back amd watched i few
It's absolutely horrendous. Beware anyone that tells you otherwise.
I loved supergirl as a kid and made sure to show to my niece when she was little. She loved it too. Though we both like fantasy movies.
To me, Helen Slater will always be Supergirl and Margot Kidder will always be Lois Lane.
I've found every Lois after Margot lacking.
Hello from Brooklyn, New York! I like all your reviews. I was wondering can you cover "Strange Days" with Ralph Feinnes, and Angela Bassett?
Love that movie
I wonder if Mark or minty lives under a desk, after the end of each video he hunches down there.
And the actress who played supergirl is a super hottie
I saw this film in the theater when I was a kid (yes, I’m old) and I absolutely loved it! Whenever it played on TV I made my family watch it. I thought it was so much fun and thought Helen Slater was beautiful!
Saw this movie on VHS when I was a kid. It was the first time I ever heard of Popeyes.
was that actually a fast food chain, or just a made up one for the movie?
@@andrewmurray1550 You never heard of Popey's Chicken? It's second only to KFC on the fast food chicken chain.
I watched this movie over and over again after recording it off cable. I LOVED IT! Definitely underrated.
10 Things You Didn't Know About Superman Returns (2006)
7. The truck that Martha drives in the beginning of the film is the same one from _Superman: The Movie._
6. People always complain that Routh's Superman never throws a single punch, a gripe that is suspiciously lacking when they talk about _Superman: The Movie._
I always fancied a fun day away with Faye Dunaway.
That 70's Captain America movie is a lot worse than this one.
Forget the 70's Captain America.
At least she looked like Supergirl.
Is that the one with Blast Hardcheese?
Naww The last fantastic 4 was worse than this one
Didnt know they made a captain america in the 70s but the one they made in the early 90s was horrible.
Super Girl for sure had a train wreck of a script, and production that failed at the box office, but it is indeed an important piece of 80's super hero culture.
“Christopher Reeve bailed from the project” given he stayed on for 3 and 4.... if that isn’t a red flag of krypton I don’t know what is.
MINTY the DIE HARD characters name was ELLIS not HARRY😁👍
his full name is Harry Ellis... so it's both.
His FIRST name is Harry doofus
@@homelesshannah50 Did John ever call him Harry?..No it was ELLIS! DUMBASS Lol
I meet miss.helen slater, in Marlborough Massachusetts, and she was so nice and wonderful. She truly was a lovely lady.
This gave us (me anyway) Helen Slater, so this movie has always been ok with me!
I loved this movie. I was a 5 year old girl when it came out and I watched it all the time.
I wish they would make a decent version of this film, so sad. :P
Yeah, this flick is beyond terrible. Just laughably horrible.
10 things you didn’t know about Tropic Thunder
That would be great, I was surprised when I learned Tom Cruise was in it.
I had such a teenage crush on Helen Slater way back then! *siighhss
🤖Taking a break from this insane stock market to relax with Minty!
👑Thanks,as always, for fantastic nostalgia!
Please do “Legend of Billie Jean”
Urbl 1 I'd like to see Minty do "Mask" (1985)...the one with Cher and Eric Stolz.
Loved this as a kid. It one of those "so bad, it's kinda watchable movies".
