Haha, except that Ma Baker is a fictional character! She is, however, based on the true character: Kate "Ma" Barker. I'm sorry, I'm just being frivolous. The song does tell her story as accurately as any song could, they just left an "r" out of her name. Hell, they're Euros, so they probably didn't know!
Perfect arrangement for backthen and frank farian 's vocal timbre was Perfect for these songs as well ones of gorgeous and talented marcia barret and liz Rebecca mitchell
Despite the fact that on the records, its not Bobby's voice but Frank Farian's he still indeed was a great frontman. He did sing sometimes live but for the most part, he did lip synch but despite all of that - it was a big thing back then and to this day, it still happens, anyways, he was one hell of a frontman and had some incredible energy and gave the group a great look. RIP Bobby
@MUSIC WORLD VISION yes i know.frank farian himself even said in a interview that all 4 were live singing later. bobby was not a good singer, but he was amazing in imitating franks voice.so they did it that way live
Yes! Glad someone got it! I lived in Italy during the mid-70's and I followed all these artists. Boney M's "Ma Baker" took Europe by storm. So when I heard "Poker Face" I immediately knew where Lady Gaga got the "ma ma ma ma"!. No one really knew in the U.S. so I brought it up with friends when I had the chance. My brother and I also worked at a radio station as DJ's in Italy then and we followed the supersonic rise of ABBA from the mid-70's to early 80's. They really didn't hit the US until the 80's. It's so funny, when the musical "MAMMA MIA" hit big on Broadway, so many friends asked me if I knew why the musical was called "Mamma Mia". I was a bit surprised at the question.... but then I realized that Abba's huge hit song "Mamma Mia" (back in the 70's) didn't really have great exposure in the States so not many made the connection. Another one - Andrea True Connection's "More, More, More" (humongous 70's hit in Europe) had a sampling taken from it in the 90's (a snippet of the instrumental in the middle of the song) and a US group turned it into a big dance hit on the charts (think it was called "Steal My Sunshine"). I was lucky to have lived 13 years abroad, picked up good music from both continents. Nice to see that some people followed these artists.
Frank Farian's assistant , Hans-Jörg Mayer, discovered a famous Tunisian folk song, "Sidi Mansour" during the holidays, and rewrote the song on a disco track.

para aquellos que nacieron en aquella epoca, par los que eramos adolecentes y disfrutamos de lo que era la buena musica en todos su esplendor for those born at that time, even those who we were teenagers and we enjoyed what was good music in all its splendor
My parents used to tell so much of Boney M that how they went viral in their days but I never considered to listen. I thought they must be some usual old school chaps but when I listened this I don't think they will ever get old. Their music remain fresh in every generation
You realize they're lip synching and neither wrote nor recorded, right? Producer Frank Farian is the writer and singer, and the "band" were hired to dance and mime.
Вражаюче! Неймовірно! Боббі Фаррелл неперевершений!!! Слухаю і споглядаю відео - це фантастично! 🇺🇦
ЩЕДЕВР НА ВСЕ ВРЕМЕНА!
I’m Russian!!! The Best for me!! Recognized them when my cousin listened them when I was 10! Now I’m 51! Love them a lot!!!
old is gold
I’m hearing this for the first time today in 2024 and it’s been on repeat all day. Dope song!
This still rocks 40 years later. Disco definitely ain't dead. Even my two teenagers admit to that disliking a lot of the music of today.
❤❤❤❤
Im a Gen z and I see girls around my age and younger listening to older stuff

Best Boney M song in my humble opinion. Bloody brilliant!!
Boney M were like a musical history lesson...

They did know but Baker was more catchy than Barker and most of it is accurate.

I'm shocked this is the first time I've heard this song today on UK Radio 2.
Desde Boney Clyde rajada de balas...GRACIAS.

Story telling in melodic lines enriches beauty of the song.
Compare this to todays pop.... i loved it when songs used to be like this.
Bobby Farrell was such a cool cat. Great dancer, terrific style.

Iam from Egypt and love "Boney M."
This is the story of Ma Baker, meanest cat from old Chicago Town...🔥🔥 👌👌👌👌
Doesn't get as much credit as he needs to. MJ may have been the king of pop but Boney M was the king of disco. Can't argue with those dance moves lol
You do realize that they didn't sing their own songs?
Yeah the songs where written by a german producer. But that is common practice with pop artists especially today.

man i love boney M!!! great music. this, rasputin and daddy cool are my favs.
Boney M. What a fantastic group. Criminally underated, one of only 6 bands, individuals with a double million selling record in the UK
Frank Farian was Boney M, and Milli Vanilli. The people you see in both groups were paid to look good, but lip synched and never actually sang.
Un clasico entre los clasicos y perfecto para el baile

Yep poker face indeed. When I first heard that ma ma ma part, I knew I had heard that before in another song. Indeed it was poker face by lady gaga

FREEZE! I'm Ma Baker - put your hands in the air,

- This is the story of Ma Baker, the meanest cat

She was the meanest cat
In old Chicago town
She was the meanest cat
She really moved them down
She had no heart at all
No no no heart at all

'cos they were mean and strong

Ma Ma Ma Ma - Ma Baker - she never could cry
Ma Ma Ma Ma - Ma Baker - but she knew how to die
They left a trail of crime
Across the U.S.A.
And when one boy was killed

she didn't care at all
just didn't care at all

One day they robbed a bank
it was their last foray
the cops appeared too soon
they couldn't get away
and all the loot they had
it made them mighty mad
and so they shot it out
Ma Baker and her sons
they didn't want to hang
they died with blazing guns
and so the story ends
of one who left no friends
