Oil dilution was your issue here and has probably had short journeys that add to the problem. 120,000 miles, so not bad. I service my Evoque every 6000 miles and do a motorway run every other week.

It’s not a Freelander. The Freelander had the old 2.2 Diesel engine and was actually very reliable. The problem was putting the Ingenium engine into the old Freelander chassis (in the Evoque and Disco Sport) which contributed to some of the issues by forcing bad placement of some parts like DPF that don’t get hot enough and cause excessive oil dilution. However, the Ingenium Diesel fails often even on the new chassis vehicles post 2019 as it’s rubbish!!!
3:29 hydraulic seperator should have done that easy or Normfest super crack + a larger copper headed thor hammer. I'm a full fat Range Rover fan to be honest, I used to work at Gaydon (engineering) and drove a few cars, 2.2 Evoque was a lagfest! SDV8 allllllllll day long love it. Subbed.
I'd be keeping an eye on that DPF. So many owners stung for a lot more, turbos, DPFs, cam chains and rebuilt or new engines, it a disgrace. Shame on JLR.
Its a combination of the industry pushing for longer service intervals and people buying diesels for the school run, combined with legislation for lower emissions. JLR just came off worst, or nerarly the worst. ...they are actualy not the most unreliable cars now. What would happen if people simply changed their oil after the 1st 1000 miles then every 6000 miles or 1 year, what ever comes first? What would happen if people bought a petrol car or an EV for short trips?
The DPF regen etc will fail, the engine will break.. I had a discovery sport, which i ultimately returned to the trader. In 6 weeks of 'ownership', it was off the road for 5 weeks and 5 days.
Or more frequently. VW, BMW all have issues with timing chains. JLR look to have suffered the most, but it's an industry (UK) wide problem. So, I have a Land Rover. The oil was first changed after 1000 miles, then every year (5k miles) since then. I would not have bought it had the first oil change been after 20,000 miles.
Sorry to say you are asking for trouble if you Mum is only going to do short trips in it. Should have got a petrol! Ive had a 2.0 Ingenium petrol Evoque, used a lot for short journeys no issues at all. I have at present a 2.0 Ingenium petrol Jag XE again no issues, but even that has oil changes every 3500 to 5000 mile intervals. Would never buy the 2.0 Ingenium Diesel. Well documented short journeys can cause DPF blockages which can cause the Turbo to blow, as well as failed re-gens causing oil dilution causing timing chain issues, again due to short journeys. If you wanted a Diesel so bad should have got the older bulletproof 2.2!
My recommendation to avoid catastrophic engine failure of your Range Rover: sell it quick before it fails then go to Toyota and buy a Land Cruiser...job done!
Cheap can be good if you then have the money to get it repaired. This car was very cheap, and the repairs were also cheap ... labour was half that of London labour costs, So, the car is a bargain!
