Directed by Claude Mulot (1942-1986) and co-written with Edgar Oppenheimer and Jean Larriaga (1945-2016), this French horror stars film, television, and theatre actress Anny Duperey, Élizabeth Teissier, Gérard-Antoine Huart, Jean-Pierre Honoré, Olivia Robin, Michèle Perello (1942-2004), Philippe Lemaire (1927-2004), film and television actress Valérie Boisgel (1946-2014), Véronique Verlhac (1932-2023), and Howard Vernon (1908-1996), well known for starring in several low-budget horror films directed by Jess Franco (1930-2013). Released under several titles such as 'Devil's Maniac, 'Ravaged, 'The Blood Rose, and 'The Burnt Rose, the film was obviously influenced by George Franju's 'Eyes Without a Face (1960), but Mulot weaves a dark and disturbing tale that goes in a very different direction with a bizarre yet compelling mixture of elegant sleaze and Gothic eeriness. The film is helped immeasurably by the cinematography of Roger Fellous (1919-2006), which is rich in pastel colours, and a deliriously authentic musical score by Jean-Pierre Dorsay which perfectly accompanies the film's atmosphere. Little is known about the composer, who seems to have led a solitary existence, as his only other credits seem to be for Mulot's comedy film 'Sexyrella (1968) and the French drama 'Three Girls to the Sun (1968). Although nowhere near the quality of its counterparts, 'The Blood Rose is a perverse descent into terror and madness and a worthy addition to any genre fan's collection.
Frédéric Lansac (Philippe Lemaire) is a brilliant but tortured man. His beautiful wife Anne (Anny Duperey) is horribly disfigured at the hands of his disgruntled ex-lover Moira (Elizabeth Teissier). Secreting Anne to his remote château, Frédéric tells everyone she has died due to her injuries, then on the sly, hires nurse Agnès (Michèle Perello) to look after her. Anne, needless to say, becomes bitter and demanding as Frédéric turns to desperate and increasingly deranged measures to restore her beauty. Enter professor Römer (Howard Vernon), who lost his medical license due to some rather unorthodox procedures and is now on the run from the authorities. Blackmailed by Frédéric, Römer has no choice but to assist in the abduction and murder of several young women in order to use their skin in a serious of experiments aimed at restoring Anne's ravaged beauty. From here on in things turn sour as Anne's paranoia escalates, killing Agnès in a fit of jealous rage. Her sudden disappearance prompts her sister Barbara (Olivia Robin) turning up looking for her. But Anne, muttering incoherently about wanting fresh skin, is the least of her problems...
