  • Olivia Colman and Peter Mullan star in Dog Altogether - the first film to be entirely written and directed by Paddy Considine. It is the story of Joseph (Peter Mullan), a man who is plagued by violence and rage that is driving him to self-destruction. As he falls further into turmoil Joseph scours the landscape in search of a single grain of redemption that might restore hope to his fractured life.
The film was later expanded into the feature-length Tyrannosaur in 2011.

Tyrannosaur full film was some of the best acting I have ever watched.

Absolutely. Just watched today for the 7th time. The same visceral surge of hate when Joseph kicks his dog to death. Then, a growing admiration for the man he eventually, tentatively, allows himself to become. Paddy Considine is a supreme actor, director, dancer...just about everything really. All of his work is the kind that digs under the skin and won't leave.
Richard, as the vengeful older brother. Morel as the dancer on the pier...scenes never to be forgotten. 👍

@@onlyhuman1954 Tyrannosaur also had a great soundtrack among other things. Might be my fave Brit film of all time. It was grim and gritty, but I like films that do not sugarcoat reality. What a cast !

@@onlyhuman1954 All the songs can be found on YT. 'Sing All Our Cares Away' is all over. I've seen the film about 5X since it was released. I have to be in the right mood, though. 'I, Daniel Blake' was another film that encapsulated the grim realities of N. England (Ken Loach).

@@KatarinaLima_ Hi Katia . I have seen many of Ken Loach's films. "I, Daniel Blake"...was great. Such a sad story, yet had many clever and touching moments as well. I like that sort of juxtaposition.

Always find it interesting to see short films that later develop into feature films.

Kudos to the elderly father actor. It's so difficult emotionally and physically to act as a patient with that level of care needs.

Oh, no. Off to give my special puppy a hug now just because. Most Brits adore our dogs more than other people, a nation of dog lovers. The majority of us would not ever do this.

    • @TheMuseSoramienne

I believe the title's actually a very good clue as to what the movie was about, but then it's also up to the viewer to build their own opinion. I can give you my view and understanding of this : I think the whole movie aims at showing that when you've been abused you show abuse (hence the man kicking his dog, the only friend he probably has, just because of one moment of anger), and the only way to break this circle is to be shown love and kindness (Here in the form of the kind woman).
And thus the title, which to me reads " in the end, he's all really just like a dog", because the man is just as sensible as his dog was, but because he was shown so much hate and was beaten himself, he takes it out on a smaller creature. Because this is all he knows.
His difficult situation does not forgive his actions, but this movie shows us that we should not judge somebody on their worst actions only, and that we should take a step back and acknowledge the fact that they can be more than what they show and give so much more than what we think, if we reach out to them with kindness.
      This is my interpretation...

The only way to break the cycle of hatred and pain is to accept love and kindness into your life. Joseph is an angry, lost man. He lives a shit life in a shit house in a shit neighbourhood in a shit county. He takes out his anger on those around him, those who have done nothing wrong (his dog, the three guys at the pub). Everything he holds near to him is taken away, sometimes through fault of his own He kicks his dog, likely his only true companion to death, it’s implied that excessive drinking has driven his friend to the grave (which is why the man’s daughter won’t look him in the eye), he gets himself banned from the dole office and then when he tries to enjoy a moment of peace, it’s interrupted by some loud mouths.
Eventually he reaches the breaking point and lashes out at some strangers. The weight of it all hits him and he breaks down and cries. In comes Hannah. Shes the only person here that actually tries to reassure him and tell him everything will be okay. That’s when it dawns upon him that there is good in his life, there are good people around him.
You can see he has this change of heart when he goes to stand over his dog’s grave. And then even that moment of solace is taken from when the three pub blokes come and attack him. He’s left scarred and damaged and basically crawls back to Hannah. She touches his face and for the first time in the whole short, he smiles. It’s a small victory, but that cycle of pain and hurt has broken. He’s found some redemption, however little it is, and his life will be ever so slightly brighter because of it

If I'm the Olivia Colman character I'm calling the police in minute one, not praying. She's braver than me, or just more stupid. That's not a safe situation for a woman on her own.

He can't control his emotions. That's part of his problem and it becomes evident throughout the movie. He instantly regrets kicking the dog and it only ads to his misery.
