    Durga Puja is a 10-day Hindu festival that celebrates the goddess Durga and her victory over the shape-shifting asura Mahishasura:
    When it's celebrated
    Durga Puja is celebrated annually in September or October.
    Where it's celebrated
    It's celebrated in many parts of India, including West Bengal, Tripura, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, and Bihar, as well as in Bangladesh, Nepal, and other countries.
    How it's celebrated
    The festival includes:
    Sculpting: Artisans create clay images of Durga and her family.
    Worship: The festival begins with Mahalaya, when eyes are painted on the images.
    Food: A community bhog, or food offering, is prepared and shared each day.
    Pandals: Temporary stages are erected and decorated with local craft materials.
    Immersion: On the tenth day, the images are immersed in a river or other body of water.
