- The Tarmachan Hills provide a terrific winter ridge walk and is ideal for the short winter days. Leaving the busy car park we walked west along the track to pick up the west top before turning and heading east towards the munro Meall nan Tarmachan. It was a terrific day with very light winds which added to the enjoyment of the experience.
Fantastic timing, did this on Christmas Day this year at 6am, great to have this video as a memory , thanks for sharing Charlie

Enjoyed seeing this appear in the feed this morning as was in Killin yesterday pm with the mrs. The range looked stunning from lowdown. I started hillwalking earlier this year and have bagged 10, this ridge probably made it my favourite Munro so far. Thanks for the videos Charlie, they have been a great resource for newbies like myself. I’m always impressed by the pace you and Mick set to get up round and down from these hills. All the best and look forward to seeing more vids in 2022!

Hi Dylan, I've always used Grivel Crampons (grivel.com/collections/crampons) and are quite happy with the performance for my walking needs. Depending upon the walking you do you'll find they last for ages. Cheers, Charlie.
What a great video - doing it that way gets the boring bit done first. Just shows, you don't need blue skies to have a great day on the hills, the light you got was brilliant. I've done the ridge several times, most recently ten days before (18.12.21) when it was spectacular, warm with large inversion cover below, but never done it with crampons / ice axe. That raven is getting very tame, always looking for food. Thanks so much for posting.

Good to see you back. I've done this ridge a couple of times. One in winter we went up a gully at the west end to reach the ridge. Liked the Ravens. We saw Ring Ouzels in the corrie on our summer traverse.

Hello, I have the GoPro Hero 9 and I'm happy with its versatility and performance when out in the hills. I shoot in 4K 30fps which captures some great footage. Cheers, Charlie.

Grand wee hike, the conditions looked great. It's a good few years since I was in the Tarmachan ridge. I did your route the opposite way round.

Went up there on the 1st December this year with my brother to do both the munro and the ridge, but due to icy conditions we only completed the munro. It was blowing a hollie on that day as well. I didn’t know that you could have went around the part where you were going to climb. We did it in an anti-clockwise direction. Great video as usual. Stay safe and thanks for sharing. 🦯🏔

@@charliemccartney7055 Charlie I will finish my hiking year with a bit more than 1900 km and about 50000 m of ascend. 200 km less than last year but not bad for a man who is in job. You still don‘t use FB, do you?
@@wjoest6694 Wolfgang, these are big numbers for the year particularly with the Covid restrictions. I don't keep as detailed stats as I only wear my Garmin Solar during on walking events either local or on the bigger hills.

It was a good training day for the crampons.
Hopefully the guy we spoke to yesterday, who had a bit of a fall (while his crampons were in his backpack) didn't do any lasting damage. He was hobbling quite a bit and clearly in pain!
@@MrSteveemac It’s always better to get the crampons on early before you hit the slip zone and that could be as simple as walking on the path. Hopefully we’ll get a chance for more practice in the weeks ahead. Cheers, Charlie.
That was a brilliant video again Charlie. Your cinematography is stunning - you have such a good eye for a shot. I have a wee technical question for you if you don't mind. Do you use a GoPro to film your videos? I use one for recording our days on the hill. These are just for personal use, I don't post them anywhere but I find that my GoPro really eats up the battery. I have 2 batteries, and even on a fairly short hill day I have to ration my use to make sure I have enough battery to film the whole day. I am thinking of just getting another battery, but wondered if you have any tips or have the same issue? All the best, Heather
Hi Heather, I use the GoPro Hero 9 and carry a spare battery when out on the hill. In cooler weather I'll have the spare battery (and phone) inside the pack with a hand warmer to ensure they aren't affected by the low temperatures. The GoPro has a foam wind muffler fitted but in the winter I'll put it in my jacket pocket or inside a pouch to protect from wind chill.
Also, I shot with Quikcapture mode on (it's the rabbit icon in the preferences) which keeps the camera operation to a minimum. I have found that two is enough for my needs but must say I'm considering purchasing the new improved battery from GoPro design for cooler temperatures. Cheers, Charlie.
GoPro has also just brought out an Enduro battery which works better in cold conditions.

Thanks to both Charlie and Mountain Arena for your replies. I'll take a look at the Enduro battery too. I like your tip for keeping the spare battery and your phone warm by using a hand warmer - I'll give that a go too. I realise that I often have my GoPro mounted on my walking pole as I use that as a tripod so it will be getting exposed to all the wind chill which probably explains why the batteries run down so quickly.
