Worse than politics are discussions as to which organization within a style is teaching kata correctly. More interesting, is the interpretation of the same kata by different styles. That horse left the barn ages ago as the proteges of those we recognize as Soke went out into the world to explore their own roads. When one considers the inventiveness and creativity of a Dan Djurdjevic, for example, what he brings to his art, and based upon his written philosophies, we have witnessed the evolution of a new style within which many classics are taught. Knowledge, enlightenment and self-improvement are what is to be sought. What works best, and why, should be the subject of discussion. Enfield Sensei contributes to that discussion, much to the advantage of all.
My instructor recommended this collection to supplement my training and despite the plethora of Goju kata uploads these are my go to resource. I have to say they have greatly enhanced my own kata and I try to emulate the effort displayed which has not gone unnoticed by my instructor. Great upload. Thanks.

@@gregs_garage The Jundokan in Okinawa was founded by Miyazato Eiichi Sensei following the death of (Goju ryu founder) Miyagi Chojun Sensei. Many instructors came up through the Jundokan, and some of them later left to start their own organizations. For example: IOGKF, Jundokan International, GKCglobal (which is us), and others. Despite not being directly affiliated with the Jundokan dojo today they follow Miyazato Sensei's teaching and are therefore Jundokan lineage. Hope that makes sense.

hello from fiji , i guess im the only one left in fiji unofficially following iogkf everyone else in fiji has affiliated to other goju ryu so hopefully i intend to restart iogkf in fiji again
As you probably know, I really do like the Kata performed as well as you did them then. I like the way you had progressed to the original Jundokan way under the eye of Miyazato Eiichi Sensei it was great to watch. I have seen you develop into a good Karate Sensei and because I am a good friend of Paul C Sensei it makes it all the better. I was wondering weather your actual performance now looks any different Paul San and now I know you have DVDs I would like to buy them and see if you have changed? I'm sorry that 2008 tainted your view of me, it was out of character for me, but I was not happy at the way things were going and let myself down a little. However things have turned for the worse at the Hombu and the Great teachings of Miyazato Eiichi via Miyagi Chojun Bushi will be lost if we are not careful. MW.
+mark weatherill Mark, thanks for being so open. Yes, I think there has definitely been an evolution in my training since this film was taken at the Jundokan (it was 1997 - almost 20 years ago!). If nothing else I've got older :-) !! In my opinion, with every generation karate changes, it's inevitable. Particularly in a style like goju as it was born as an evolving style with Miyagi Sensei. You still have offshoots of Higaonna Kanryo's karate in Toonryu and Higa lineage goju, and even Japanese Goju. So today the evolution continues and I think all we can do is to protect the principles of the style.
This type of Karate style; does not believe in high kicks! My Sensi told me if you want to kick some one in the head make his head come down to your feet. This style of Karate is all about balance and a good amount of floor fighting, With emphasises on power - power does come from the ground so you should have you feet on the ground to tap into it! The style was meant for power to break threw Samurai armor (at least armor of the time) . High kicks are nice to look at but leave more vunabilites if excuitted well can be very devastating blows but may not be safe or practical to use at certain situations besides legal issues with every one carrying video cameras these days . A lot harder trying to convince a jury you killed some one with a Taekwondo spinning kick to the head that it was self defense. While more conservative moves are easier to articulate to police, public, juries
This doesn't look like 3 weeks of training, with this kind of kata performance it seems more like 30 years of kata training. Thanks for uploading your video.
I did Goju Ryu for 12 yrs. getting my ni dan and teaching for awhile. I then switched to MMA when I saw how MMA students were training with no katas and realized it was more realistic than Goju Ryu or any style of karate. Goju Ryu is only a good foundation to other self-defense arts like boxing, judo, jujitsu and mma.
Fantasic!! This is an excellent reference video. This is a great resource as a technical demonstration of Goju kata movements with speed and power... the bonus is, it encompasses Gekasai Dai Ichi through Tensho with the same consistent expertise. Beautiful! I'm left with a couple impressions... you've practiced a LONG time. Your quick arm movements show a protracted devotion to physical experimentation and focus in order to deliver punches and guards with such power and relaxation. My point is, most guys with guns like yours (like weightlifters) have a hard time executing the requisite quick arm movements without appearing/being muscle-bound. Well done! I do have a question: Does Goju practice a rising punch? There are styles that incorporate a rising punch in some of their forms/katas. It's a distinctly subtle feature used in some styles, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know about Goju. (my total Goju experience is 3 weeks' training in a Goju dojo in Japan) I see the rising punch and wonder 'how far back' its' roots hold; and to what degree did Goju's original masters retain "foreign" ideas. The movement I see is most apparent as a profiled view at 1:07, 1:09, and 9:10, especially at 1/4 normal video speed. No offense intended; the katas I learned during my visit weren't the same. Thank you very much for posting this!
+Aaron Thank you for your comment Aaron. Regarding arm movements: Yes, I have spent a lot of time experimenting with speed development. This has included practicing the old style hojo undo (supplemental exercises), in addition to "modern" resistance training (specialized weight training to promote explosive speed and power development); the modern training methodology I found to be more beneficial in that regard, while the old style hojo undo I found to be beneficial in developing connective tissue and structure. The main emphasis of the resistance training was legs/hips, waist/back/abs (core), triceps, and very little arm curl type exercises. Regarding a rising punch: Yes, there are upward traveling thrusting (including punching) movements in addition to upper-cut type punches. Generally thrusts in kata either travel upwards or downwards, rarely straight (parallel to the ground). The reason for this is to use gravity, or the Earth to multiply the force of the thrust. I believe the "original masters" would have welcomed any ideas to add to their art's effectiveness. Of course most of what we see in Okinawan martial arts has a heavy "foreign" influence (as do all martial arts with a history of refinement over time).
The kata are performed in the order taught for this particular branch of goju ryu karate. The ratio of kicks to hand techniques is a reflection of self-defense encounters as opposed to a competitive arena.
+john calampiano There is a lot of "basic" bunkai for the goju katas on UA-cam if you look around. I'm working mostly with a more usable context for the bunkai. We have many examples of this type of bunkai on our channel. We also sell DVDs and video files that analyze the katas and their application in great detail.
Brad Gray Watching these kata's through my 2015 eyes and as an IOGKF Yudansha I can say very little has changed. The IOGKF and Higaonna Sensei have remained very consistent.
Steve Maggers Yes Steve, there was never a great difference anyway. However, having trained with Higaonna Sensei for so long on a regular basis I'm sure it is his teachings that triumph here :-).
Brad Gray Brad, what I notice most about watching these kata is a slight pelvic tilt (in the wrong direction). That said I (hopefully) know a lot more about what the kata is supposed to be doing nowadays. Therefore when I watch my kata (on anyone's for that matter) I am looking at the transitions and their implications rather than a specific way of "doing" things. I think it's also interesting to note that at the old Jundokan dojo, before any of the splits that took place, senior teachers expressed and therefore taught the kata uniquely. For myself now following Taira Masaji Sensei I practice kata with much more emphasis on moving from the center using koshi.
GKCgoju Sure thing no doubt. I have trained with Higaonna Sensei and hope to again his health permitting. I've also had the good fortune to have trained with several of the IOGKF senior instructors over the last few years and watching your video makes me smile because your execution of the kata's is how I have also been taught. That makes me happy to see. Kata is the essence of Okinawan Goju Ryu, to quote Higaonna Sensei, and the expression of those kata is how we evolve as students of the art in my view. I've enjoyed watching your videos over the months including those of Taira Masaji Sensei and I've always thought to seek out the opportunity to train with you guys. I've particularly enjoyed the way bunkai is broken down and demonstrated.

Kyokushin is a combination of Goju and Shotokan. I'm not familiar with shinkyokushin. Sosai Oyama included Tensho, Sanchin, Seuinchin and many other goju katas....I don't understand your post.
Very good. Thank You.
Beautiful katas. Similar to Shotokan. Powerful, precise and artful.
+vikotto Thank you.
Good performance
Thank you.
Thanks for sharing very nice of you!
Troy Lansaw You are welcome. We love to share so that we can learn also.
The guy in the back corner is New Zealands Dennis May Sensei, 9th Dan
Actually, it is not Dennis - the video is a bit grainy so difficult to see.
My favourite martial art ,my everyday use in real fight's
Karate é uma vida
Yes, for many people.
Excelente. Muy buena técnica y espíritu!
hello from fiji , i guess im the only one left in fiji unofficially following iogkf everyone else in fiji has affiliated to other goju ryu so hopefully i intend to restart iogkf in fiji again
Felix Fremlin good luck with your training.
deep respect to you sir!
I finally learned saifa! and I'm only a yellow belt so I'm kind of ahead along with my other yellow belt friend.
Ah muy bueas Katas :) me gusta su ejecución.
soft ,hard, style ☯️
Damn dude, you got some fire in those moves.
So today the evolution continues and I think all we can do is to protect the principles of the style.
very good
+Roy Kadafi Thank you.
I found it very strange to notice the kicks are very low and the katas explore short movements such as elbow strikes. Very interesting nonetheless.
Was not meant to be a attack on you just an explanation with reasoning :)
@@josephfaraci A high kick can end a fightin in seconds.
ryvoltz High kicks for what? Life Is not a competition
edgar brown it’s not the main purpose
Nice form.
This is some real deal kata my friend I'm first Dan shorin ryu but I really like these kata and would love to learn them in depth
i got my black belt in shorei sho bukhan goju in sept.10 1988, shihan roseberry came down to florida to test me. he put me thru the ringer
What a great experience for you.
it was great. thank you.i went in 1984 to 1989
loved every minute
just sitting in sumo stance doing hundred down block like it's nothing... my frigid hero in the back.
Very good! Real punches and power, looking a bit Shotokan though,
My favourite katas
mantap gan
Shotokan 💪🏽🥋
Osu!
This doesn't look like 3 weeks of training, with this kind of kata performance it seems more like 30 years of kata training. Thanks for uploading your video.
john calampiano That is 3 weeks of training at the Jundokan :-)
I did Goju Ryu for 12 yrs. getting my ni dan and teaching for awhile. I then switched to MMA when I saw how MMA students were training with no katas and realized it was more realistic than Goju Ryu or any style of karate. Goju Ryu is only a good foundation to other self-defense arts like boxing, judo, jujitsu and mma.
Well, I appreciate you watching the video and taking your time to comment.
Why were you trying to transition from Sensei Higaonna's teachings?
+GKCgoju hey I just went to the world karate federation and i got the second place
Are the kata listed in degree of difficulty? Also why so few kicks ? Thanks.
The kata are performed in the order taught for this particular branch of goju ryu karate. The ratio of kicks to hand techniques is a reflection of self-defense encounters as opposed to a competitive arena.
If possible, kindly upload the bunkais (application) of the katas please. Thank you for this inspiring video,
+john calampiano There is a lot of "basic" bunkai for the goju katas on UA-cam if you look around. I'm working mostly with a more usable context for the bunkai. We have many examples of this type of bunkai on our channel. We also sell DVDs and video files that analyze the katas and their application in great detail.
+GKCgoju Thanks for the info. I'll search it in the net.
john calampiano good luck.
Looks like the last part of Tensho.
Très bon karatéka.
Thank you.
Nice to see, still some IOGKF in there.
Shinsokai Okinawa Goju Ryu Indeed.
I love the power of Goju but I prefer Shotokan katas
Shotokan is great!
shisochin! that is the one!
Can you name all the Katas he is doing? especially the open hand one, I really like that one.
Tensho Kata
Be interesting to see what those katas look like now....and what are your thoughts about watching what your katas were then?
Brad Gray Watching these kata's through my 2015 eyes and as an IOGKF Yudansha I can say very little has changed. The IOGKF and Higaonna Sensei have remained very consistent.
Interesting... good stuff.
I've particularly enjoyed the way bunkai is broken down and demonstrated.
gary spiers mario karate legend trained in okinawa and became world famous doorman and body guard gary spiers was the first person in the world to be given a red and white belt buy master yamaguchi
Yes, an icon of UK karate.
...Not THE😮 late,great Grandmaster Gogen Yamaguchi 12th dan😂🤣?
good katas
lacks amplitude in kicks and some hand movements, and strength in the slow movements. In some defensive positions the hand is not well positioned.
What is 'amplitude in kicks'?
In saifa when finishing it off u should remember to keep it slow and correct because it has nothing to Do with block or punch when finishing.
Hai Sensei!
Strong!!!!
I think that some karatê stiles should be reformas to adap themselves to new street reality of our cities
antonio campelo why?
Sanseiru is Suparipei?
What's your question?
@@GKCgoju is the same Kata with diferent name?
@@sisac No. Sanseiru and Suparinpei are two different kata. You can see them in the video.
why are your kicks so low?
If you are referring to the front kicks it is because of the target I aiming for - boukou.
looks more like Shotokan!
Hahaha.
Get your eyes checked
I wrote that a YEAR AGO! LOL! Still looks a little like Shotokan, but only a little!
