I love that we’re getting into the quiet switches era because up until recently there were very few options. I like my fancy loud as hell keyboard for when I’m at home but at the office? The options I had were either the laptops keyboard that sucks, a membrane 5$ keyboard that sucks, or some Logitech also membrane variant that costs 100€ and is almost as bad as the laptops keyboard.
Surprisingly even without all the special pre-made foams I actually think Betty won in terms of quality and quietness of the sound. There's a couple things you could do to make it significantly quieter: 1. Sit the entire keyboard FLAT (not on the raised flip out legs) on at least 1cm of closed cell packing foam (you definitely have some if you have product boxes lying around). 1-3 keyboard mats, especially foam+felt ones, would also work but cost like 30-50 bucks vs the free foam. This will heavily isolate the board from the desk, IMO making everything sound a lot better, and completely removing the bass-ey reverberations that happen into the desk especially in the spacebar (or the snappy bottom out of heavy bump tactiles). You can simulate the difference by just trying your board on the desk, and then on your mattress. 2. Using car dampener, rolled paper towel, painters tape, or various other combinations of things to significantly fill up the space bar. The adhesive foams used in the video help a little bit, but really filling the bar up can do so much more. Similar can also be done to all of the long modifier keys even the ones without stabilizers. Using an alternate space bar of a softer material like polycarbonate can also help. 3. Using a switch dampening pad on top of the space bar switch, or improvising it by using a little rectangle of the adhesive foam on the inner wall of the space bar, right above or below the switch, so that it comes in contact with the switch at the bottom out (basically like the cherry + north-facing switch interference, but intentional, and dampened). It may take a couple tries to get the positioning right, but the bottom out can turn into a thud instead of a clack, stopping both the switch and the stabilizers from bottoming out, without making it feel mushy or preventing actuation.
before i started getting into this stuff i tried to foam my steelseries apex pro (aluminum plate that is also the body, so kinda hopeless). i cut the foam into pieces and got it into every crevice inside the chassis and it made next to no difference. then i used double sided tape to put more foam, 4mm thick, on the bottom of the case, externally...made a world of difference even despite having a desk pad already
To answer your question about hippos, no they're not quiet 😂 I live in Kenya & I've been to Maasai Mara where we stayed at a lodge near the Mara river. At night & early morning you could hear them moving around & occasionally getting into some fights. I legit thought there were trucks in the area, that's how loud they were.
The H81 sounds kinda nice for a supposedly quiet board. I'm wondering now if you could do a challenge to replicate the sound of Topre with mechanical switches.
Yes please, a silent option for everyone that isn't alone while working on pc and prefers to hear the music instead of clacking keyboard sounds. Good options here
I'm going to go with Betty's for just a hair quieter, but I like the look of Jake's more. I'm really liking that silent keyboards are becoming more prominent. As somone who has a pretty high end sound setup, and spends quite a bit of time typing while live either in meetings or in presentations, the noise gate often isnt enough. I tend to hit the key's pretty hard and bottom out alot when i'm typing quickly, particularly when I take notes and I've recently found this channel, which I'm really enjoying. Particularly when it's a cheaper build as I am very budget limited. I recently purchased a Keychron K4 pro, and while it's miles better than my old Corsair Strafe, I am planning to mod it to make it quieter after the holidays, so I'll continue watching and learn the best and least expensive way to do this. Thanks for the video.
I'm a big fan of the Gecko linears, they feel really nice to type on without being mushy. I do like the looks of the keychron better, but that comes down to the knob more than anything for me.
I think noise level is about the same, but the sounds are different. There are phone apps to measure noise level that you can use when you do a typing test. I'd also recommend typing on it like you would when you are actually typing, which I imagine might be harder and faster than what you showed in the short typing clip. Also, I think you're not supposed to use blue/painter's/masking tape in keyboards with batteries. An alternative is called wire harness electrical tape. It's used in automotive engines and is high heat-resistant and also has innate sound dampening qualities. I have no idea if it leaves behind a residue, but reading reviews on specific brands of it should answer that. I, too, use Royal Kludges, only I've been too scared/annoyed/lazy to remove the feet to unscrew the case from any of them, so I haven't had the chance to really mod one yet, but I really want to try that tape in my M75. I currently have Gateron Pro 3.0s and cherry profile PBT keycaps on it. It's not silent, but I like the sound profile. I do want a silent set of switches, as well, though, which led me to this video. I'm looking at Sea Salt Silent, Gamakay Pegasus, Akko Fairy Silents, and Redragon Stars A120. Click and Thock rated the Redragon switches surprisingly highly but I'd really like to see how they compare directly to the Pegasus.
Hi Betty I recommend that you should try reviewing the Nuphy Halo65 as it is a customised prebuilt mechanical keyboard and it has prelubed switches and a silicone ghost sound absorbing spacebar Thank you.
I wish you would have listed all the materials you used in the description for both mods for those of us who don't have a room full of random keyboard accessories just laying around. Pricing for all the materials at the time of filming would be helpful too.
Wow those both are just so buttery. Love em both but for me I'd have to choose his but only on appearance. Just like that color combo more. Also the size is more compact which I also prefer.
This video was so much fun to watch. I like Betty's keyboard to start with little more, but Jake's mods were very cool. I think I would do a hybrid build out of the two. Betty's keyboard too start with, Jake's mods on the build, and I would finish it off with Betty's switches. I can't wait to see the next competition video you guys come up with. Oh by the way, have you ever done a review video on the CIDOO ABM 084 by EPOMAKER? I've been using it for about a week now and I love it. Thock, Thock. Thanks Guys...
I like Betty's. The spacebar literally creates 20-25% of the noise. A quiet spacebar goes a long way! Both of them rock though. I do prefer the smaller form factor of the bf though, and Keychron's are great boards.
I am not an expert but if you hair dryer your sticky padding for your keyboard it wont damage the adhesive on the pads and you can just lift it and still reappliable. I use this method on my mouse when I manually replace switches.
“Hippos are silent” a google found this “hippos honking calls can be up to 115db and can be heard over a mile away” to put that into perspective a chainsaw is about 110-120 or a jet engine at full takeoff about 250 ft away is about as loud as a hippo. So they are loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage in a short period of time. Before looking it up I knew they were loud but I didn’t know how loud and that’s crazy.
You may wanna test the new GamaKay TK75 75% with the Phoenix Switches. Extrem silent pre built. Very fun to use. Might be worth a review in terms of silent or quiet keyboards
This is the first video I've ever watched on your channel...would happen to be one where your kitty makes a cameo (even for a second lol). I like cats :)
Haiz, after being here for over a year, seeing them putting pe foam and tape mod the board to have a silent build is so wrong. The reason why the RK sound good is because you make it as anti silent as possible. Tape mod kick the sound up a notch and pe make it poppier. If you want a true silent build just use eva or poron foam
Thanks for the comparison, as this is good to know before going into mechanical keyboards but unfortunately for me, NONE of them are truly silent enough to use at work or at night with others in the same house, with all of them in 40+ decibel range
Hippos are deceptively not chill - very territorial with a tendency to bite trespassers. And a surprising turn of speed for something that weighs nearly a ton.
Great job, thanks for the video! But spacebars on both keyboards are so loud in comparison to other keys. I wonder is there a way to get rid of this spacebar upstroke sound?
Gasket mount might could help.. I'm running silent peaches. Buddy of my had some QC issues with his peaches so they've been hybridized with some reds.. Not really much sound difference. I only went through the aggravation cause my buddy has some serious sensory overload issues and loud KB are death to him... He likes the feel of what I'm now calling blood peaches (outemu cheap red switch bodies, spring and stem from the peaches... )

How does the Gecko silent and WS x60 compare to the Boba U4S? I just built a silent keyboard with the Boba U4S and I wonder if I can improve it with the switches you used.
I don't have a full set of silents but I got a huge set of linear tester switches, including 6 different silents. Silent boba, WS, gecko, heartbeat, coral, and alpaca. By far my favorite was the gecko. Not the most silent of them, but certainly the best feel and sound (quietly thocky). All of the other silent switches felt noticeably scratchy and you could hear the scratch slightly. Lubing might remedy it but I was lookng for the best silent stock switches. Unfortunely Kinetic Labs just ran out of stock on geckos and won't restock for about another 2 months.
@Jumplify Thank you, I will tried to lube my U4s first to see if it reduce the scratchy sound. If it doesn't work then I will tried the Haimu heartbeat
Hey i have a GANSS 87C-D TKL keyboard (BT and Wired). It stopped working one day, both in Wired and BT. It is getting detected as keyboard in windows though. Also none of the lights in keyboard is working. I have checked the light individually and it is working. What could be the issue ? I do not see any short in PCB as well.
