Poika saunoo is actually not about the boys going into the sauna, it's not literal; as far as I understand poika refers to the trophy they won, and the lyrics "poika on tullut kotiin", "poika saunoo" and "kannusta samppanjaa" means the trophy has come home and is celebrating the win and doing Finnish things. It's not a song you can translate literally ;D

Hi guys, wanted to clear something out after watching the video...
"Poika Saunoo" isn't the official hockey song, so it isn't played each year as you deemed, though possibly one of the most memorable ones ( at least I think so ;P). Here in Finland it is a custom to make a new song for each hockey season, like last time we had "Paita Kattoon" by Tuomas Kauhanen, (which I recommend you to try out, I think it has an awesome energy that fits to the sport).
Also the "poika" that the song refers to basically means the championships throphy cup that the winners of the tournament get, hence as we won the tournament the year this song was released it is implicated in the song by "poika on tullut kotiin" = the boy has come home. The trophy has come home.
Awesome song, not maybe gold in the history of music itself, but for me it will always be one of the most amazing hockey songs of ours.
Like what you're doing here, it's also nice to see you're not only listening to the horrible genres and pieces of our music I myself cringe at.

Like whole finland is seen as promised country of heavy metal and all you listen is this? Like this doesn't expose you to true finnish music. Here's some songs you should consider listening to since the songs of metal bands are often at least partly in english, and weight is in lyrics.
Children of bodom- lake bodom (duh, the most well known finnish band. Name comes from the bodom incident.)
Ensiferum- victory song
Amorphis- alone
Amorphis- Silent waters
Kotiteollisuus- tämän taivaan alla ( band was ones very popular, and is very finnish.)

Try at least couple of them...just to be equal. You are representing finnish music...do it right. There is alot of metal bands in finland. There is a reason for it, we love our metal.
please, if you're gonna suggest Sonata Arctica, at least suggest the old (good) Sonata. And Stratovarius is amazing aswell

JLTS76 I am not a big enough fan of them to be able to tell which ones of their songs are actually theirs and which are covers. What i'm trying to put up is the most "easiest" songs of said bands so that i don't scare these boys lifeless. Lol... I love sonatas Full moon, but again i don't know if it is theirs. If you know good ones, put them up! More the merrier. ;D

Full Moon is theirs, and would definitely be a good song to listen to from Sonata Arctica.
Poika Saunoo was made after Finland won world champion. And the cup they won was "Poika"
Actually it was made before that for JYP in case the won the championship, which didn't happen and the song got popular after Finland won the world championship. Also, the WC trophy is called kundi (a guy), even though most trophies are indeed called poika. Not that anyone cares.

The band is actually from the UK but the singer is Finnish, Teemu Brunila.
Interesting fact I thought when you commented on the "Tequila" song. One thing absolutely true about most, and especially older Finnish music is our absolute love relationship with the minor key, as you progress you will find many songs with happy lyrics still to be written in minor key. We jive depressing!

The song ''Poika Saunoo'' basically means that when we win the hockey tournament (usually the IIHF) and get the trophy, it's a tradition among the finnish hockey players that they take the trophy to sauna with them.
So the song name roughly means that ''The Boy in the Sauna'', but the boy is actually the trophy from 1st place in the tournament.

And about the sauna thing, I think the boy means the trophy, it's like when we get the "boy" back in finland and then the hockey players party with the trophy and that's the meaning of "saunoa" in this song. But I'm not really interested in ice hockey and I don't know much about this, so if I'm wrong then someone please correct me! ;D

The word "poika = boy" is actually what we call a hockey trophy in Finland for some reason :D So when we won the world championship back in 2011 we brought the "boy" home to Finland and when you are in Finland you go to the sauna.

In Poika Saunaa "boy" refers to throphy that winners get. In Finland it's usually taken to sauna.
Phrase "poika saunoo" refers to taking the throphy (poika) with you to the victory party after the game, which includes a visit to sauna, of cource.

Finnish is well known of metal music and we have a lot those bands that are popular (some of them out of Finland too). There was one list of few Finland metal bands, so I add some other bands you could listen. They sing actual Finnish:
Mokoma and Stam1na. Really well known and popular bands here in Finland.
One of the most famous Finnish rock bands is Nightwish along side the others

Actually Poika (the boy) means the cup that is given to team who has won the championship. So when they won the wc, they brought the boy back home and they celebreted it by taking the trophy to sauna (which is pretty usual tradition with any sports team in Finland.
Usually the boy travels around the world mostly in Canada or Russia, but eventually he comes home and we celebrate it. "Meidän poika on tullut kotiin" (Our boy has come home)
