Last week I ran “out of fuel” with around 2 liters of gas in my Acerbis 3.9 tank, 2025 fe501s. It was pitch black in Death Valley. I first ran out maybe 15 miles from my camp. I was able to tip the bike over and wobble my bike side to side many times, and keep riding downhill, trying to coast with the bike idling. Each time my bike died my lights cut out and it was pretty terrifying. Anyhow, I got within 4 miles of camp and my buddy was able to go get some gas. When I could not run my bike anymore I probably still had a liter of fuel, maybe more. Good learning experience, but we were pretty worked after a 230 mile ride. It would have nice just to make it to camp and have a beer. Haha.
I was able to design and 3D print essentially the same system however I ran into the same problem of the pump not being able to pull a prime once there was air in the hose. Very frustrating flaw to fix unfortunately. I’m back to running the stock setup. Great job tacomoto for continuing to find a solution!!
I’ll definitely wait for the double snorkel. It’s probably obvious but I can confirm if you are descending a hill you will push the fuel away from the pump and run out. It appears I have quite a list of Taco products that will be purchased asap!! Hope to see you guys soon enough!
That prototype at the end looks like the real deal, will definitely consider purchasing one when they come out. I’ve never had an issue with my 23 drawing the gas but it would be nice to have the peace of mind either way.
Great solution ! Mike if you need any long term test on your products! Send it to me ! Im an engineer and know my 500 quiet well ! Im happy to test and improve your products ! I ride this bike every day !!
Can't imagine why KTM did this other than production cost savings. Bizarre nonfunctional design. Can't wait for your updated pump system to hit the market! Thank you! I put the IMS tank on my bike and got a low fuel light and put two gallons in the tank. Ugh.
Most excellent! device. I hope it will also be able to be used on the 3 gal. imf tank that goes on the honda crf450 rl. I'm sure there is a good bit of fuel being left in the wings.🦉
I will be very interested in the double snorkel unit as it continues to develop for my 24 Husqvarna FE350S. Have many of your products on it already and am very happy with all of them. Thanks for the update.
Makes me scratch my head and wonder wth were the KTM engineers thinking? At least for now it makes me glad I purchased a Sherco 300sef vs the 350KTM I was looking at. At at rate I applaud your ingenuity and efforts in finding a solution to this issue.
So funny, Dave and I were thinking of developing this as well here at Heimdall, sort of a "Pickup Tube" is what we were calling it, but you beat us to it. Nicely done Mike. Also, I believe you have one of our KTM Bar Risers "on Mike's desk" your office is telling us. Let us know whether you've been able to look at that. Thanks Mike.
Someone had to solve KTMs fuel tank problems besides KTM itself. I’m glad it’s Taco Moto leading the way with their excellent tech support. I own a 2024 350 XWF. I uncorked it (ECU, No Reeds, FMF Q4, etc.) and it runs and handles like a dream. However, I developed a fear of riding out too far and running out of gas on such an amazing bike. Go figure. If only KTM would just design an old school tank and pump they would dominate off road motorcycles. Right now, I trust my Honda CRF more than I do my new KTM. Thanks Taco for another great video.
I had an Oilhead GS with a fuel pump on one side of the saddle shaped tank. My friend laughed at me when we rode through the prairies and I was leaning over hard and weaving on straight roads. Touratech had a 42 l tank and I think a quick disconnect hose between the bottom of the saddles. Or maybe that was my idea with a one way valve. Fuel pump issues seem to be an issue in general for modern bikes. For long distance, I'd rather have real saddles with 2 OEM pumps.
Just wondering if you ever considered a vacuum pulse pump to pull fuel from the wings? It's a super simple system and could be much cheaper than all of this custom machined stuff. Plus it's self priming using engine vacuum.
Hey Mike I love your commitment to perfection but it’s killing me to have my 501 in pieces waiting for the new pick up. Got the brand new ims 4.5g we are coming out of winter here in oz so want to start riding again. Should I swap out the tank for the old style fuel pump or do you think this new update will be sorted in the next month?
No guarantees on the revised snorkel, but not likely However we have the 12-23 gen pump assemblies in stock we could ship you immediately if you want to do the compatible ims tank
If you have a complete new pump assembly that can pull from both wings, why bother with the single hose add on to the stock pump? Will you sell both versions?
The double snorkel pump looks great. Just wondering how it handles the situation where one tank wing is dry and the other has fuel? How does it stop constantly sucking air, or the auto air purge looks after that?
Did you guys finally finish the self-priming pump design??? I've been waiting on buying a 3~4gal tank for my 2024 FE501s until you had a self-priming pump option available. 🙏🙏🙏
I'm excited for the 3-pickup setup! Just curious, I'm sure you've seen Holley's hydramat? It seems like it would be a good pickup solution; they claim that they will only flow when wet, so if fuel sloshes away the material actually closes up keeping you from sucking air. I feel like that would eliminate the foam as well as the tilt switch, but you'd still need the check ball on top of each hydramat I'd think. The are pricy though. In any case, I'm excided about the prospect of actually using all the fuel in my tank!
Our performance specifications exceeded the capabilities of the hydro mat after a thorough suitability investigation. Not to mention a very high price $$$$
Mike, I’m interested in purchasing the double for my 23’ TX300 when it’s available. I have a question concern any decrease in fuel capacity. I will need to calculate the reduction from stock, or possibly aftermarket tank capacity if I go with one your pump mod will fit. I want to know the amount of fuel the added pickups/filters etc inserted into the tank will reduce the capacity? I wouldn’t think it would be significant. Will you be publishing the amounts? Thanks!
This fuel pickup situation, is it an only a problem on the new 24 bikes or are 23 affected by this too? Got a 23 FE501 and looking at the acerbic 12 or 15l so wondering if a straight swap will work as intended or if I'll need this? Thank you
this is the pump system on the following machines: 22.5+ competition (non headlight) two and four stroke KTM, Husqvarna and GASGAS 250-450 bikes 24+ enduro (headlight) two and four stroke KTM, Husqvarna and GASGAS 250-501 bikes
No offense but what is the point of still releasing the gen 1 snorkel rather than waiting until the two snorkel setup is ready. That seems like it's better in every respect.
I was a little unclear on one point… Are you saying I can buy a current IMS 4.5 gallon tank that is for enduro model year 23 or earlier and it will fit my 24 FE501 and I can buy a fuel pump assembly that looks like the 23 or earlier version from you?
No. The '23 tank will NOT fit the '24. For the '24 model 4.5 gal IMS tank they (IMS) provide the option of a cutout for either 1) the current 24+ gen pump, OR 2) a cutout for the previous gen pump.
Would the poor mans 2024 500excf over sized tank approach be to install a 3.5 gal tank, use 2024 oem pump, and dont expect to use more than say 3 gallons?
Really....why not retrofit a 23 and back fuel pump. Would just require two holes on the deep end, add a new metal plate to adapt the new tank opening. The dry prime aspect of the new snorkle is a design deficit.
Love it. As a retired engineer I dig this sh*t. Keep setting the bar higher Mike!
That last pump is super cool. Uber fix! Keep up the great work.
I agree💯, when it’s available that’ll be the one I go with 🤙🏼
Thanks Mike. Your passion and dedication is noticed and appreciated.
thanks, that's nice of you so say. stay rad out there
I can't wait for the final version. I want to get the IMS 4.5 gal Tank with the new setup. I would totally buy the entire working version from Taco.

We’ve experienced that same exact frustration as well, downhill fuel run outs
The double snorkel laughs at that situation 😎
Looking forward to this product.

Excellent video. Put me on the list for that last pump! I ran out this weekend in the woods and whoops and still had tons of fuel in the left wing.

Thanks heaps iv just bought a 2025 six days 300 I’ll be definitely keeping an eye on the last prototype pump that pumps from both side
Killing it, thank you for all the hard work and innovation!!!
Winter is here in Canada - just waiting for the release. Eagerly awaiting the FE501s videos and build.

125 hours on mine and never had an issue

Cant wait to see the final version and het my hands on it.. great work Taco 🌮 Moto.
The complexity of all that makes me like my carburetor even more
KTM should just buy this new solution from you man; win win!
They should pay him for doing their job for sure. Such a poor design by them.

Yep, that last option is what ill wait for and use with a bigger tank as well 🤙
Be great if you could make a variation of the Top Secret pump for the CRF450L Nomad tank!
Nice job!
Unreal video, you guys rock!

There is no problem. Just people trying to better a product for there lack of riding ability
Yeah, no problems 😂

Hey Mike I'm excited about the dual snorkel set up. Will this work in both oem and Acerbis 3.9 gallon tanks.
It’s being designed for any tank any size

Have you looked into Holley hydromats ? Could be your solution
Are these planning to be compatible with the larger tank upgrades as well as the stock sized fuel tanks?
Mike, for a 23’ exc, do you prefer the 3.9 acerbis or the 4.5 IMS? Which one is more efficient in miles/tank.
The double snorkel pump looks great. Just wondering how it handles the situation where one tank wing is dry and the other has fuel? How does it stop constantly sucking air, or the auto air purge looks after that?
Magic. Race car and aviation fuel system tech that’s established and proven
I do love a bit of magic 😅

Will the snokel work on the crf450L with the nomad tank ?
Negative
How about a brass T to catch the right side too?
if only it was that simple we'd have already incorporated that. keep the ideas coming though! much appreciated and valued
I am surprised KTM doesn’t call and ask for you to supply them with what they should have done from the beginning.
