  • (Paragliding) pilots can develop a fear of flying. In this first episode you'll learn the basics of fear in general and fear of flying specifically. This episode together with future ones (released at least weekly) will form a multi-part instructional on the subject fear of flying from a pilots perspective. I will cover amongst other things: the basics, symptoms and signs (so you can recognize fear also in others), my personal experience with developping fear of flying and what it did to me, misconceptions about fear of flying, and of course: dealing with it.

Nice.vid and very relevant. I'm afraid of heights, so hanging from a few lines in they sky with nothing under my feet generates an almost overwhelming faer for me,. When I was flying oher aircraft with enclosed cockpits it wasn't so bad. The Army taught me how to function even when extremely afraid, so I can stay focussed on what I'm doing and fight my way through it. I view fighting my fear as a challenge. Paragliding is such a great sport, and the fear is like adding hot spice. Looking forward to more vids, was great to meet you at Tunk.

Hi Alex what an honor to have your reply as the first ever on my channel, thanks! Wow now that means you have some balls of steel fighting though it like that, the army has some powerfull tools in their training arsenal. Respect for putting it out there by the way, now thats something you dont hear often. I flew prop aircraft for a while and indeed that feels very different. For sure understandable that a fear of flying feels very different under a pg. Hope the next vids in the series can provide you with some more insights, keep in touch! Yeah it really is beautifull and deep our sport right?! Flying tunkalilla was amazing, good memories!

Hi Bas, thanks for your vids. I am suffering with GAD, almost every time, I am going up to the hill, i am imaging my funeral :-) and I am saying goodbay to my children, wife and family, or imaging myself at wheelchair. But then...it so beautiful to fly, that I have to do it again. Perfect work!!!! Thank you!

Martin i have huge respect for you, suffering from General Axiety Disorder, yet still flying!! i image it makes the experience of fear a lot more intense and or frequent. I am no pscyhologist (i am a professional coach though) and feel flattered that my videos are helping in some way. If you can conquer (or better yet live with) your fear, that would be an awe inspiring thing. Please stay in touch on how you progress!

Thanks Bart! So I've been skydiving from 1979 to 1990 and paragliding from 1990 until now. I have times off! So now after 5 years off I am freaking out about the risers parting from the carabiners so if I let the fear go I like hang on to the risers for grim death in a bit of turbulence. This is irrational lol. My gear is outstanding and I'm good at checking before I fly.
So I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your vids! And flying some nice safe sites with soft ground underneath, and not high because it's getting high that triggers it. Which is dumb because high is safe and low is not. Anyway. Thanks again Bart. I'll watch the next one now.

Lots of experience on you then, think you're going to love the episode that airs in half an hour, taps into quite a few things you write about. I recognize that clinging to gear, happens a lot. The most important step is realizing it is an irrational fear, so congrats on taking that one already! I really applaude you for taking on your fear this way, also what you wrote in the other comment, sounds like a real solid plan to get on top of your game again. Which I promise will happen if you continue this way! Ps Somehow maybe rudolf got this "bart" thing going but my name is actually Bas :-D

Have been flying for 5 years and am quite comfortable up to 2k ft above the ground but have the irrational fear of being too high. So I sympathize.
