You just know by context. Yes. It's like how we would know the difference in hearing "red" (color) versus "read" (action: past). Or "reed" (stick) versus "read" (action: present)

Nosotros form in the preterite: how do we know if it's in the past or not? Why would this form not change when the rest do? Are we left to reveal that it's in the past or present just by giving more detail in the other parts of our speaking? Like 'ayer nosotros hablamos'? Thanks =)

    Hi Jordan!
I love watching your videos, and owe you a huge thanks for all the work you put into them. You have been a big help in this undertaking :)
However, I am having difficulties following your videos in order. The first year ones are chronologically organized, which helps a lot. But when I get to 02- I find myself searching for lessons I didn't realize I have missed.
Is there anything I am missing that will help me be better organized with how I learn?

Thanks for your comment/question. It's not to say that vosotros isn't important in the Spanish language...
For my students, it would be more confusing since the vosotros is not used with most of the migrant workers in the area where I live. I'd rather just teach them ustedes for the all inclusive 'you plural' since that is what Spanish-speaking countries aside from Spain use.
    Good luck on your studying!

There are many different 'yo' endings for verbs depending on when you are talking about.
Since this is the past tense, it ends differently.
    I talk/speak / I am talking/speaking = Yo hablo.
    I talked/spoke = Yo hablé

You're videos are one great piece of information señor. primero graçias por ti.
    in the tryouts the question
"did you all ( yall) break the window" is the Vosotras / vosotros form.
the translation " Ellos rompieron la ventana? " is "they broke the window?".
so, can you please let me know the endings for vosotros in preterite form.

    • @SeñorJordan
      @SeñorJordan  8 років тому

+Pratheep Kumar "rompieron" is actually the they form AND the you all (ustedes) form. If you were in Spain and needed vosotros though, it would be "rompisteis".

Some words break the "rule." "El problema" is one of those. It's actually from Greek and a few other words from Greek do this as well. Such as: "el planeta" (planet), "el tema" (theme), "el clima" (climate) among others....

@weirdoinchains Sorry that I'm not Tontito Frito, but it would be -isteis. For example, with an ER verb like comer, you would say comisteis. For an IR verb, the ending would be the same. Vivir, for example, would also use -isteis and would be vivisteis. An AR verb uses -asteis as the ending. Hablar, for example, would be hablasteis. I don't know if you needed all of that info, but I hope it helped! :)

Your videos are awesome! I like to watch them before my tutoring sessions to help my students understand better. Now, As I native speaker, the preterite of 'Leer' in the 3rd person singular and plural has a 'y' in it:
    él/ella/Ud: leyó
    &
    ellos/ellas/uds: leyeron
    (instead of leió and leieron).
Just my two cents. Great job! and thanks so much for your fun videos!

Despite what you may think, even the 'Queen's' English has evolved over time and continues evolving as language tends to do and I don't know that you can say it is more 'correct'.
How would you define 'proper English'? You have northerners, midlanders and southerners even in England and I would imagine there is quite a lot of variance in how they speak.

      creer - creyó, creyeron
      leer - leyó, leyeron

    "Spoken incorrectly" ?
What defines if a language is spoken 'correctly.' The fundamental purpose of language is to convey ideas from one person to another.
Should we say that instead of Spanish, I should be teaching Latin or it's predecessor since Latin is the language that came before Spanish.

      Short answer:
      Basically, it's "el problema"
      Long answer:
It's because it comes from Greek and words that come from Greek (loan words) that end in various letters + a are masculine: planeta, problema (to name a few).

All I am saying is that if you are going to learn Spanish you should have the respect to learn it as the Spanish speak it. Including the lisp.
