Thanks for the video, brilliant stuff. As a guy guy that came of age surfing Bells and always loved the contest, no one will ever measure up to Michael Peterson. He really was unique like David Bowie's Space Oddity. I have never heard anyone say they were close to him or even share a personal moment. But he came down from the North like a force of nature and won the contest 3 years in a row. And we still had no idea who he was. Perhaps you might ask the best guys who reigned over Bells in the early days. To the best of my memory they were in no real order of importance because they were as a rule not contest surfers as follows: Wayne Lynch Kym Thompson ( Water Cooled Surfboards) Strapper ( Rip Curl then his own shop) Fred Pyke and my favorite Kim Potter, who was the most unassuming guy you could ever meet but just absolutely crushed massive Bells. For anyone who remembers pre 1980 Bells when you could park on the headland my favorite memory is rocking out at the Torquay Pub on Friday night and driving to Bells, there was a faint moon, the swell was corduroy to the horizon maybe 20 panel vans on the bluff. We could tell it was epic, the ground was vibrating, the air was alive. I could feel every fibre of my body processing the moment. Sleep was fragmented, every time a closeout would come through I could feel my body flinch like preparing for battle. Come the early dawn was like nothing I have ever seen or will see again. 15' sets stretching to the horizon , soft offshore winds and 3 guys already out. Absolute perfection Wayne Lynch Kym Thompson Kim Potter Just recreating it in my mind brings back chills. It was a masterpiece.
Bunch of people riding Thrusters at Bells in 81 Simon, Warren Powell (first surfer to win a contest on a Thruster) Mark Price (borrowed a board from Simon) and others, Wayne Lynch, Nat, Midget in the Masters. We have Simon's board on display at the Australian National Surfing Museum in Torquay along with 8 other boards from the event showing the progression from single, twin, 1+2, 2+1 and of course Powelly's Thruster as well. Epicness!!
