I lived in a shelter once. For 11 months ( going from shelter to shelter) and it was 32 men to each “dorm”. It was hell because it stank (was a homeless shelter so of course.) people were loud, fighting and smoking crack/shooting heroin in the bathrooms. I imagine this would be great since it’s not homeless people and you pay to be there. I couldn’t do it because I’d have flashbacks to the homeless shelters.
As someone who has gone through I don't know how many shelters, it is indeed hell. I actually felt safer on the streets. There may have been two shelters where the people were kind and decent but that experience was not good for my PTSD.
Because they don't have the best reputation in many parts of the world. There are some great hostels, but there has also been a lot of issues with crime, drugs, uncleanliness, etc.
Hostels specifically in the United States are not good. They usually have a better reputation in places like London, Germany, France...European Countries.
I've been to lots of hostels all around Europe and never had a problem with any of them. They're cheap, usually very close to the centre and I always stay just for a couple of days so I don't care if they're not the most beautiful places to stay. I think as long as your standards are not too high and you want something cheap, hostels are the best option.
I went to Germany for a school trip once and we stayed in a youth hostel... one of the German kids from another school threw a knife through one of our windows lmao (I have nothing against Germany btw)

I know, right? It's a fancy hostel. I've stayed in cheaper hostels that are just as fancy (though I have to accept that prices will be higher since this place is in California) and they tend to have privacy curtains.
