The sort of freshwater rivers that have been flooding have never been dredged anyway. This is a fallacy that it would help. There's no point in dredging Rivers like that, it doesn't create any more space and just destroys habitats. A standard lowland river is only capable of holding between a 1 in 5 - 1 in 10 flood event anyway, and these are 1 in 30 plus level events.
Unfortunately we've built and decided to live right across flood planes and covered the place in concrete. We need better flood defenses by working with nature and we need to do it soon because unfortunately these events are going to bexome more frequent.

I fear that what we are experiencing today is not even the overture. With every tenth of a degree the effects get worse and worse, it's not a linear progression, it's exponential because the amount of moisture the air can hold increases as a percentage with every degree. There are many places that will become uninhabitable in the (obviously) near future because the cost of living is far too high, no insurance would cover you or your business.

Welsh Government need to seriously be looking at schemes for holding back the rain water further up the valleys then releasing it slowly. Farmers need to enlisted and paid to allow their grass land further up the valleys to flood. It would only be for a few weeks at most and cheap. Tempoarary flooding would work in tandem with flood defenses in the town and villages. There are already incebtives for tree planting to hold water on the mountain sides of river valleys. This has been known to work for decades.. why isn't there more of it in the heads of the Welsh Valleys? Given the cost in human misery of these floods, aside from the damage, it would be cheaper for the Welsh Government to buy land strategically to plant their own trees.

I feel sorry for the people and I despise the politicians who continue to lie to the people about climate change and its devastating effects. I fear that what we are experiencing today is not even the overture. With every tenth of a degree the effects get worse and worse, it's not a linear progression, it's exponential because the amount of moisture the air can hold increases as a percentage with every degree. There are many places that will become uninhabitable in the (obviously) near future because the cost of living is far too high, no insurance would cover you or your business.
the storm didn't help but ultimately this is due to water companies and government neglecting drain maintenance and upgrades, but share holders prefer profits

Welsh Government need to seriously be looking at schemes for holding back the rain water further up the valleys then releasing it slowly. Farmers need to enlisted and paid to allow their grass land further up the valleys to flood. It would only be for a few weeks at most and cheap.
Tempoarary flooding would work in tandem with flood defenses in the town and villages. There are already incebtives for tree planting to hold water on the mountain sides of river valleys. This has been known to work for decades.. why isn't there more of it in the heads of the Welsh Valleys? Given the cost in human misery of these floods, aside from the damage, it would be cheaper for the Welsh Government to buy land strategically to plant their own trees.
