Wheeling and Lake Erie trains at Spencer

- We spent a February afternoon filming Wheeling & Lake Erie trains in Spencer Ohio. First we caught W&LE 5391 ( Rio Grande livery SD40T-2 ) at Pawnee leading a westbound 223 train. Once in Spence we found the Medina based local shoving a cut onto a siding, spotting some cars and departing with their train. W&LE 4000 was the sole power for this train. Then train 226 with W&LE 6984 took their place to wait in the siding. 5391 cut away from their cars at the carwash and pulled into town to spot engine 4003 for another train. 5391 returned to their train and 6984 pulled into the AC&Y yard to spot a few cars. W&LE 6316 in Wisconsin Central livery led the light power move back to the siding. After they returned to their train the local fire department made a call run north of town. 5391 departs west across the AC&Y heading onto the Hartland Sub and W&LE 6984 heads east taking the Brewster Sub.

Awesome interchange, great modeling possibilities 👍
I’m glad W&LE decided to keep some original D&RGW SD40T-2 & GP40 units around
I remember back in 1978, we were at RI ,Burr Oak yard,,Chicago. The yard / terminal was full of the typical very old RI power, and on the turn table was a yet to be delivered DRGW SD40T-2. I guess it had been so long since the RI employees(3-4) had seen anything new, that they were climbing all over(even on top) of the engine.
Those must have been pretty sharp when new
we drove by la grange and sitting outside were 2 freshly painted new SLSF SD40-2s.
those were sharp!
one of these days i am going to put a lot of my old stuff on the internet.
Do you remember the number?
Thank you for showing full train consists and not just the power. I am modeling the W&LE so these are great for establishing accurate trains.
You’re welcome! I typically shoot the whole train unless my cards are near full
If you are modeling wheeling and Lake Erie then you will need a lot of black open top hoppers
Another great catch and video! Love that Rio Grande unit!
Thank you me too
I would love to see your Wheeling and Lake Erie videos on a dvd. The perfect idea for the tile can be: Wheeling and Lake Erie railway across Ohio
Awesome video!
Looks great!
Thank you
Super video!
Thank you
Great video.
Thank you!
Wow that's another great video Scott. Been a while since I've been through Spencer, guess I need to head that way again.
Thank you! It can be a good place to hang out if all the trains show up at once!
Hi! Scott i was recommended by Mike N8rbi Radio to check out your train videos and you have nice train videos my friend keep up the good work👍💯.
I love that they keep the RIO Grande paint! Good video Scott!
Thank you. I’m glad since I missed out on filming actual Rio Grande!
i realize I'm quite randomly asking but do anybody know a good place to stream new series online?
@Nico Caiden Flixportal xD
@Jamie Tristan Thank you, I went there and it seems to work =) I appreciate it !!
@Nico Caiden Glad I could help xD
Thanks
Thank you!
Good video scott
Thank you
Nice
Thanks
What's the train frequency like out there? Also, is there any index of the Wheelings train symbols online?
Nice! How good of a spot is this in terms of views and train frequency? I’ve been interested in trying to capture the W&LE for a while and I’ve heard this is their “crossroads” along with the Brewster sub being the busiest(if you happen to know the frequency of trains on that line please do say)!
It’s a good spot for sure. Where the Brewster, Hartland, Carey and Akron subs converge. I believe there is 8-12 trains a day through here but schedules vary and some normally are at night. It can be dead for half the day and then 3 trains show up about the same time.
Awesome video Scott! Where does train 226 come from and where does it go to?
caught the gp 38s .
Awesome video, as always! Does WLE still run their SD40Ts?
Thank you! Yes both should still be in service
yes there are still in service
Heard in the news that W&LE trains have been excessively blocking vehicle traffic. A village clerk acted as if she didn't know of any problem, then told me the railroad does whatever it wants to. That can't be totally right. Anyone have an a updates?
Yeah most railroads pretty much do as they please
I don't recognize those signals ... are they simply proceed and stop ? I can't seem to find any info on this. Thanks!
I have not looked to see what indication they give the train. I know the W&LE must call up CSX for a signal
Do you know why 4000 was hooked on to that train and then left behind?
It looks like it would be used on a train to Carey later.
@@ScottTaipaleRail that makes sense, thank you.
What exactly were they doing? It seemed like they were shuffling like no tomorrow. I never knew of a Rio Grande train before this video.
4000 did a set out and pick up. The Rio set out some cars and a locomotive. The other train was waiting for the Rio & train to clear to continue east. This is the crossroads of 4 important radiants of the W&LE. East to Akron, SE to Brewster, NW to Bellevue and West to Carey.
The Hartwell railroad runs Rio Grande gp40 number 3044 in original livery, I filmed it recently but the video quality is terrible
It’s actually a gp35 and I’ve seen it at least 20 times
TrainFan119 okay sorry
TrainFan119 btw subbed
I’d like to get down to the Hartwell some day ...
Scott Taipale I've filmed 7 of there engines, all while stopped sadly I've never caught them running
Nice video. For future reference that's River Corners Rd in that first shot. That's my uncles farm whose driveway comes out at the crossing
Ah thank you. Thought I had the road right but I was too lazy to look at a map!
wreck somewhere
Wreck where??
emergency vehicles responding in the video
Oh yes lol. I edited this video before I went on vacation and forgot I put those in there
