That show is called Quantum Leap, it's set in the future, but the man they show asking that question in the mirror "leaps" back in time into other people's bodies.
The goal is for him to offset negative events that effect the future. He leaps into a new body every episode. He has to figure out who's body he's in and who he was sent to save or rescue/accomplish some specific task as that person, thus fulfilling their destiny in time, before he can then "leap" into another body, in yet another time in history.
There's even an episode where he plays Marilyn Monroe, he's got to wear her shoes and dresses and kiss men, etc. It was a very funny but also sometimes sad and insightful show. You are essentially placed into the perspective of these people, in their exact time in history and how different life has been from one year to the next, much less many decades in between, and it made it easier for ppl to see some of these figures as actual human beings that had real thoughts and feelings and internal conflicts, decisions to make and why they may have made them. Sam's partner Al is a hologram that sometimes shows up with statistical advice and comic relief, along with the foreshadowing of a cellphone with his handheld computer-like device that almost never worked. He's often seen shaking or even smacking it to get it to work. Lmao!! I often think of Ziggy when I'm using my phone and it's pissing me off (his handheld)
