What an absolute delight it must be to have anything to do with these fabulous legendary aircraft. The fact that we still have a few "live" ones is owing to the skills of these wonderful Folks that look after our aviation history, well done! Thanks so much for this.
Those sounds remind me of the starting up the Draken back when I was a conscript auxiliary mechanic. Draken had a similar engine, an Avon engine copy built by Volvo Flygmotor and it seems to have the same starting procedure as well. The start engine in Draken used isopropylnitrate as its fuel. Quite trustworthy system, but poor conscripts were every so often covered with a thick cloud of burnt fuel, that was effectively working like somewhat depleted tear gas..
@British Airways Boeing 747-436 Probably the fumes were not too toxic, otherwise peacetime conscripts would never have been anywhere near the DK during startup without gas mask. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isopropyl_nitrate
Thank you. I went on to fly with the US Navy, but as a kid a Squadron of Lightnings came to Wheelus and I've always been fascinated by them. Cockpit tours are always so telling.
Excellent video. The lightning is my favourite all time aircraft and gutted I've never gotten to see it fly. So really appreciate the LPG doing their runs in the jet and keeping this jet alive.
Very good! The Lightning was a big bird. Esp given the limited fuel supply. I guess most space taken up by the engines, air intake and afterburner ducts.
There's no reason why this can't fly. The engines are both fine and controls all work OK. Keeping it in cotton wool only leads to things seizing up, it needs to be back in the air.

Great to hear you enjoyed it, Derek.
It's great to see this old bird still being loved and cared for! It's such a shame that she'll never fly again, though ;(
She is certainly well maintained by a great bunch of volunteers.
i'll Fly it on my PPL license! I'll have a bloody go at least! 50/50 chance of survival but it'll be one heck of a ride!
they fly in south africa.

Great vid and very cool that the LPG are doing this. I did get thrown my the title though, I thought at first they were running her on LPG!
beautiful iconic aircraft of the skies lovely to see and hear

Cheers Tony
I love that aeroplane,thank you
It’s something else being close to it in reheat tho!

Mind you, it does have a skinny airframe (17:28).
Great video!
Cheers
Great😊
Thought for a minute someone had got an Avon running on LPG!
A lot of people have said lol
Great to see! There appears to be a hammer and sickle painted on the nose. Why is that?
My favourite Cold War fighter ⚡️⚡️
She is a beauty.
was it bringing active missiles?
Lots of dials, but from what I’ve heard, all you needed was a clock & fuel gauge…😁
The Tyres on a Lighting are like nothing I have seen on other Aircraft so it must be a problem sourcing them?
One cross-wind landing could write a set of mainwheel tyres off.
Miss Wayward Bodies does a lot better intake dive.
Is it true these things could actually reach Mach 1 without afterburner??
The Lightning was the first aircraft able to "supercruise". That is, cruise supersonically without afterburners. Concorde was another.
It could easily go supersonic in the climb !
Why LPG ? Cost or cleaner running ?
LPG is the Lightning Preservation Group😊 but I understand that you said that.
@@bugler75 Thanks now I feel like a total idiot !😀
Simon Bingham not at all! When I see LPG I think the same as you because so many of our work vehicles are being converted 😊
They are doing God's Work, and this is His song.

Pathetic how they wont let them fly.
Looks like a health and safety nightmare!!!
