    The correcting helped on our Havashu (mix between a Bichon Havanese & Shih-Tzu). I know you say, that you dont like it too much on small dogs, but it worked wonders. She is now 1 years old and SO good on a leash. She isnt reactive on leash when there are other dogs, she only looks at other dogs, like she's curious. Your videos are truly a life saver! :D

    Just found your videos. Previously had a wheaten terrier. Great dog, submissive enough that training was a breeze. Loved him for 12 years. His successor is an Airedale terrier puppy who is now 5 mo old. VERY smart and sweet but more willful than my wheaten was. She has learned all her basics already but thought I might need some help with training a more assertive puppy. 6 week AKC puppy class ended up being a waste of time. She already knew what they were teaching and it was all treats and positivity. When I asked for help on specific problems, like avoiding a collar grab, they smiled and shrugged. So disappointing.
    She’s getting bigger and has decided it’s okay to not do as I ask, even with a treat sometimes. Thanks for helping me understand I can’t expect perfection at this point and that I can be slightly firm with her if needed. She’s currently a velociraptor (fast with lots of teeth) and jumping and mouthing are an issue. I’m way more confident that we’ll get through it and she’ll be a great dog in the end with your methods. She really does want to please, I just need to train myself with your help to show her how great life can be when she follows me. Please never stop making these videos.

    I love your videos and feel like you're giving the best advice and tips around here, but sometimes it seems too easy when you do it. I have been able to put the harness and leash on when I'm feeding my puppy. But whenever I stop, the puppy starts to struggle and try to bite the harnnes and the leash. I would like more videos of dogs that are having this kind of difficulty and how to fix them.

      I know this is quite late, but have you looked at the Gentle Leader head collar? It's almost like auto-correct for leash pulling/lunging/rushing off, as the dog's own movements tugs its head back around towards you.

    Can you show how to solve problem with dogs that get anxiety/shut down with a harness? Ears go to the side and tail is tucked in back; doesn’t eat treats because of high anxiety and almost crawls over to a spot and lays there and won’t move. Various techniques have failed: treat, treat, treat, touching with harness, leave harness on in the house, distract by doing it at favorite location. Not fear based I don’t think as dog eats treats off of it, walks by it, smells it and even lays next to it.

      Some puppies like pattern games. You can try one, two, three steps, then get her to sit. Soon you'll have a pup that sits as soon as you stop without having to say anything. For now, you'll probably have to say sit. Hope that helps.

      Check out Nate Schoemer who had his own TV show where he would take shelter dogs and train them to be service dogs. Doggy U is another one. There are a lot of puppy raising programs so they start as soon as you get your dog. How are things going with your training - not sure if your dog has taken the service dog test yet. I believe they have to be at least one year old before they can be tested.

    "You can't punish a behavior the dog doesn't know." Damn, I wish more people who try to train their own dogs knew that one! I've seen so, so many of them use punishment in an attempt to *teach* the behavior -- they think that if a dog gets harshly corrected until they get it right, they'll get it right faster. Usually, all that happens is that the dog shuts down in fear and stops being able to learn at all until it stops.

    When I adopted my adult 70 lb pitbull, I tried walking him with only his collar and a leash, and he had such a bad pulling habit that he pulled a muscle in my shoulder pretty badly! Some dogs like a big pitbull can pull hard enough to hurt a person, which mine did. I ended up using a gentle leader. which was great. We have finally worked it out now that he does not need the gentle leader any longer. The leash is loose!

    • @melinehno6875
      @melinehno6875 2 роки тому +1

      @@rando348 Once your dog is no longer pulling on walks using the Gentle Leader (GL) you will want to begin this process for its use. Towards the end of the walk move the leash clip from the Gentle Leader to a regular collar while leaving the GL on your dog. Your dog is less likely to pull the last 10 minutes or so of a long walk. (this is a rinse and repeat process and isn't always going to be successful. My dog needed 4-5 months (he is a husky however) before he was able to walk on collar.)

    Our 11 week black lab (boing! boing! boing! 🤣😂🤣) has been here 2 weeks and is ready for some lessons. Wonderful, smart, energetic when not sleeping, brave etc. Sleeps thru the night in an indoor pen. Starting sit, down, stand, spins, off, off-leash come to heel position (then free to run again). Sits for meals and before doors, excellent recall to name, runs into both large and small crates (not locked in more than a minute yet), beginning retrieve and drop... veeerrrry food motivated. 😋 One very short leash lesson went well...tug, call, treat 👍Not on a walk yet. Potty on pads getting better, potty outside increasing. Labra-gator mouthing with shark teeth is insane...I'm wearing leather gloves while trying to inhibit it.

    • @Drux.i
      @Drux.i Рік тому +1

      Just wanted to say, for any future readers-- I very much suggest not using a puppy pad if you can avoid it. Start potty training the moment you get home, don't even allow accidents in the house. The moment they wake up from a nap, get done eating or drinking, or just finished playing, take them outside. If an accident does happen in the house, clean it immediately with enzyme cleaner, and take any poo outside to where you'd like them to go potty. Potty pads just teach them its okay to go in the house. You don't want them to think it's okay.
      -I have a 3 year old GSD mix who has never had an accident indoors, a (Now passed away) 13 year old Lab mix who only had a handful mainly due to old age, and a 9 week old GSD puppy that has only had accidents due to the runs after deworming.

    • @judymiller5154

      @@Drux.i I totally agree it did add some confusion, leading to more accidents. Unfortunately, we had weeks of insane downpour and so I justified pads inside her pen for overnight and by the door. I had to learn she is a multiple pee-er and to keep walking to allow for the repeats (once, she peed 7 times!) But at 16-17 weeks the magic happened and she became 98% reliable to either walk to the door or, my fav, sit at my feet and stare at me 😁

    I have a very small breed puppy (around 6 lbs) in an area of the country that gets very cold. He's high energy, but during long stretches of the year it's too cold to take him out for walks. Also, I'm older and disabled and frequently am unable to take him out even in good weather. I know it's a departure from what you usually do, but it would be really helpful if you could do a video on how to teach a dog to walk on a treadmill. I've tried, but he just gets terrified as soon as it moves and refuses to move forward.

      Maybe you can just play with the pup.? Put him in one room and do a treasure hunt through the house with his favorite toy at the end. Does he follow the same path as you did or does he go right for the treats? Build up his confidence by putting one treat in one box. As soon as he keeps getting it consistently, can add a cue like Find it, seek, or search. Thinking games and toys will help tamp down his energy level. My one Dobe only eats his lunch out of a snuffle mat. If I put it in his dish, it stays in the dish. Sara Ondrako has a great video on how to make a snuffle mat with a pocket. Just getting him out of the house to go to a store should help.

    What an easy puppo. My puppy was turning to bite the harness and then bite the leash. This pup is half asleep just going with it 😅

    Hi Joel! First of all, excellent channel and very helpful content. I know you said in another video that leash reactivity is best achieved at around 9 months as the dog's brain is more mature. I have a 4 month Rhodesian mix that weighs 17 kg already and LR only functions when we're alone or little distraction. At the sight of people and other dogs, he flies. What advice can you give for strong puppies like him? Thank you so much!

    What do you think of a house line? Many trainers on UA-cam recommend it, but my small pup likes keep chewing on it and every time it's like a fight when trying to take it out from her mouth...btw, great to see some videos of small breed training!

    I’m binge watching you and this is MUCH more my comfort level with my 3 month old… a trainer came over and yanked his neck to quiet him in his crate. I found cheese and cucumbers to be a MUCH better pacifier. Switching back to my harness 🫡

    This morning my puppy got out of her harness!! We were right behind my house when the neighbor’s mean female pit barked at us frantically! Lilly got loose, but luckily she was too tired to run far. She was biting me hard on both hands as I tried to put her harness back on. It seemed like a half hour before I could put it back on! Why does Petsmart sell that garbage? The Doctor was right about it! I’m getting her a new gentle leader! She has escaped from her collar too! She has a big chest and a small neck.😎🌺🐶🦋🐲🐳🐕

    I do the moving when my puppy doesn't do the right thing, I say I'm "changing the context". Basically repositioning myself and the dog without adding more commands cause he has a short attention span and we can start over new..

    I need like a "puppy 24 hours" video. Cause you say, that's the session. What happens now? Do you just go on a walk and let it do whatever it wants? How does the rest fo the walk look?

    This is great, I'll have to re-watch it when the time comes to leash-train our future Beagle puppy, who will move in with us end of November. Watching your videos definitely helps with the puppy jitters,.

    Can you do a video with a large 5 month old dog please and more with two dogs at a time. I have sibling husky german Shepard mixed and I’ve been walking them separately. Is it too soon for the gentle leader collar? Should I walk them together?

    Can I add that this method worked with my older, much bigger 9 month-old in a harness as she will not wear a collar after her previous owner used a prong collar and cheap shock collar which would burn holes in her neck? The correction is a little different than with a collar, I use my wrist in an upward direction rather than the low side pull Joel uses with a gentle leader, it took me about 20mins to stop her pulling like a freight train. She now heals perfectly after a week.
