OK im down for the idea of this competition, but how about instead of the combat, yall do a discipline yall havent done before, (ie poles, jumping, or maybe some western dressage) cause i think watching yall 2 try a different discipline would be so funny and id watch for sure LOL
You guys should do a competition with all different horse trainers. The phases each consisting of different disciplines (reining, barrel racing, dressage, jumping, saddleseat, gaited riding (paso fino), trick riding etc) and see who comes out on top! I think it would be so interesting to see what disciplines cross over and see who is most versatile! And if you did it I think Michael Gascon should be in it!
Yes, so that he can yank and jerk on the horses face, because that's always the best way to soften a horse...make them real defensive of their face first.
Hi Matt! I ride in the jumpers and we call the fleece a “shadow roll” and we use them for horses that flip/raise their head in front of the jump. It just encourages them to keep their head lower and the fleece blocks their view when their head is too high. Same idea :) New to your channel!
Same name for racing also. I THINK it's the same universal. Although, I could absolutely be wrong. I do know in racing the name comes from horses wanting to jump shadows and so this was invented and hence the name lol.
Yep, shadow roll. On the running horses, the ones who would like to get their nose up/ evade the bit didn't like roll getting in their line of sight. I was starting horses so it helped me with a different issue; colts that would spook at shadows or shade or different colored footing on the track or arena. Some wouldn't like the sun slanting in through the indoor throwing stripes on the ground etc. Cheap remedy and for starting young'uns it was very temporary.
I love you and Clinton so a show down would be so fun to watch!!! I loved the horse swap with you and Fallon it was my all time favorite you tube video 👏🏻 so yes let’s do this 😁
I love that this channel offers the equestrian community a glimpse of what reining truly is. I would love to see more of this content from other professionals because it is few and far between. I think joining hands with other proclaimed professionals is a great way to bring more exposure and growth to the reining community! I would LOVE to see an exhibition of multiple events from several professionals!
Love seeing more and more Charros making the transition into reining. Having grown up in the same environment, the biggest revelation I received was that sometimes we have to put culture and pride which largely make up identity, behind us if what we truly desire is to evolve in our horsemanship, period. That can be hard! That's two guys now that come up to learn from you Matt! Way to be! Mariano Pedrero is a big time reiner from Mexico who branched off from a respected Charro family to work with Greg Darnell. Aswell as Lorenzo Rios with Carol Rose. I mean that's how Xtra Quarter Horses started out after all. Alot of ties!
Oh! I remember using mayonnaise to deep condition my hair in the 70's!...20 minutes with or without heat, then rinse out. This was back in the 70's.!:)
Yeah you and Clinton Anderson, amazing!! Ps. Because of you i start to ride western instead of dressage! Loving it, my horse is so much relaxed! Love your videos ❤️
I loved that episode with Fallon Taylor. I’m having fun doing some reining techniques from your website. I’m also learning some barrels from Fallon’s site. Keep ‘em coming ❤❤
I would love to see you and Clinton go head to head… nothing better then seeing our idols doing normal or ordinary people stuff! I especially like when people of different disciplines do cross over stuff!
I would love to see you throw down with Clinton Anderson! I've followed DUH for years and am new to your program, although I'm hitting the ground running. A colt starting exhibition would be so cool!
with as hot as the ground gets here in scottsdale like 150 degrees by 2pm are you using golden wings synthetics shoes on my the temp on the bottom of there foot never gets above 114 with metal shoes it sky rockets to over 140 as high as 157 hot hot hot
Love the mayonnaise trick! Would it work on horses with normal coats? I don't want destroy anything here. OMG! Yes, you and Clinton definitely should do this! I would go watch whatever the cost! Two of my favorite world class trainers competing, heck yes!
I love the idea of challenge with Clinton! Instead of boxing you can do dancing battle lol It will be super fun! As a long time follower of you both I would love to see the challenge!
Totally awesome idea, I would definitely watch it! The challenge sounds really interesting, I wonder who would actually come out on top and become the ultimate winner. Sounds sick :D
Hey Matt! I just wanna say that your my idol, and you encourage me to want to follow my dreams to be a reining trainer, I do reining and I’m only 12, and wanna continue it into my future!
There’s an exact event (competition) that you where talking about in Ohio 3 day colt starting competition and then in the evening it’s what they call Mission accomplished which is performances with horses showing the finished product of horse training..it’s a very cool event
It’s called a shadow roll! Jumpers use it on spooky horses so they don’t get a good look at scary jumps or other things around the arena. I’d assume it is the same with race horses. Just acts like a blinder of sorts for “looky” horses
in Australia we call them nose rolls, they’re to stop horses from lifting their heads too high as then they can’t see. they’re a lot bigger than the one this filly has on though.
Hey there from Ontario, Canada. Love watching you channel. I train Standardbred race horses, and show cutting horses with my grandson. What you are using is called a shadow roll, we use them for Exactly what you said for them not to see shadows, they sometimes can see tire tracks when you are racing or when it’s a sunny day they will try to jump a shadow which is why use them not on all horses but But obviously the ones I do need them. Good luck with your show season looking forward to new videos. Rheal
I live in CA and know many barrel horses that are ex Reiners or have been sent to Reining training first including mine. Also shadow rolls can be used on a harsh nose and. I had a custom hackmore that Was great but not all needed the harsh nose piece but some did.
The fleece on the nose band is called a shadow roll. It’s purpose is to keep colts from seeing shadows, flying dirt, etc directly under them so they don’t spook/ jump sideways. Also serves the purpose you stated. Keeps there head up, looking ahead. Extending their stride. You wouldn’t believe it if you saw me, but as a teenager I was small enough to gallop race horses.
@@mattmillsreining1 I just found you on Utube yesterday. Getting involved in reining has been on my bucket list for 15 years. I am so excited to find your channel and learning the sport!
You could absolutely do this in the horse world. Get 1 person from each discipline, Reining, Barrels, Natural Horsemanship, Some of the cow sports that my brain is blanking on, Dressage, Eventing, Hunters Endurance ect and come up with challenges. Everyone does the challenges on their normal horse and judges everyone on their normal event.
the nose band is SO interesting to me. do you think possibly it could help them bend at the pole more in order TO SEE more of the ground? maybe helpful in that sense as well? idk. my mind is kinda blown at that lol . ive always thought of those to be a waste.
I have to clip my horses before a show every time so I have to have a really good supplement for shine and I use dac oil. Minis have to have certain show clips before shows but the dac oil really shines them up
I don’t remember who it was, but years ago I saw something similar in that a Reiner and a dressage rider switched horses/ styles. I think your idea with more extreme different riding styles would be very entertaining!
@Christie Gamel I have a friend starting a training group here in Oklahoma. I haven’t been able to get involved yet due to work and health issues, but I am looking forward to it!
We put them on Harness racing horses so that they dont see ground shadows and their front legs when they are racing it keeps them concentrated and we call them nose shadow stoppers, and not fussy thing hihihi 😏
I think this is a stellar idea! I have a feeling you'll humble him lol. When you all select a charity, I hope you consider Saved By Horses which is a grassroots organization I founded, connecting marginalized youth with horses, mentoring, and community. I would really love to see this happen.
Yeah lets do this it will be so much fun to watch this love your videos men your amazing god bless you your family your horses and all the people works with you and i suggest for the 3rd roun a barrel race or roping " COME ON CLINTON ANSWER THIS MEN WE ALL WAITTING"
Matt I seriously love your videos, and I mean this all in fun... Were you a little tuned up? Lol. I was all on board till hand to hand combat 🤣 but seriously, would love to see a horse challenge 🤘 ride on bud
Trotting horse people use them to stop the horse spooking at ther shadows in shaddy areas or in the sun so yeah ill have to look in to that lexi my young one dose a lot of poring when she is tied up before and after her ground work lessons so may work on her
My father bred our quarter horse Jolyn and her filly was beautiful, Shylyn - but the vet said she had ringworm and would never make a good race horse. I wonder if that was true.
I would think stepping into a different box for the 3rd event like dressage test or showjumping test .... and if it were Warwick Schiller I would watch 100%

Yes I love that idea
A showdown event would be very interesting!! Dressage as the third tie breaker round.

Agreed! I’ve had that thought for a while
I'd love to see like 4 or 5 trainers from different disciplines compete in each other's disciplines
Now we’re talkin!
We’ve used coconut oil on the horses to help their coats ♥️
They're called shadow rolls and they keep the horses from jumping or shying at the shadows on the track.

How about the last competition both of you have 1 hour to learn how to trick rope 😂 something totally different then what you guys are used to .
Un saludo Adrián, glad to see another charro in the chat
Last challenge is a Cala (Mexican reining)
Shadow roll...we used it on the race horses to less reflection hitting their eyes while running (which lessens accidents).
I would LOVE to see you put them hands on Clinton Anderson!!!! It would be AWESOME
🤣🤣🤣

My aunt Liz used to put mayonnaise in your hair has conditioner. I know for a fact that when she did that for her hair was like silk in the summer.

Your Matt Mills Fuzzy thing is called a Shadow Roll. fyi. lol So they don't see shadows on the track and try to jump what they think is a hole.

Mayo is great for people's hair too. Leaves it so soft
Colt starting, reining, and English jumping!
Ketchup on the white mane and tail will whiten and take out stains! No lie!
Absolutelly. I have been searching Matt Mills vs. Clinton Anderson for a long time and nothing pops up yet. Another great idea Matt.
Reining with the same horse you start and then with each other's horse.

There'd be some disadvantages for sure. No dressage horse is going to spin like a reiner but then most western horses don't ride on contact.

The ones for jumpers could double as a neck pillow they're so fluffy!
