As a secondary (11-18) teacher, I’m always impressed by kids that wear sub-culture clothing on non-uniform days, be it metal or goth etc. I think it shows a strong sense of self and dedication when many kids wear the same “Leisurewear” clothing and are afraid to show any personality. I’m a 51 year old that loves Pyrrhon / Slugdge / Carpathian Forest / Portal etc. so for me it’s always “Great, another member of our army”.

Metal is not a rebellion. Those who listen to Metal are listening to it because they like the music (and Metal music is full of subgenres for every musical taste) and nothing more.
Those who listen to Metal only to attract other people's attention or to "start a rebellion" against anyone they never last.

I couldn't agree more and I can definitely relate. I began getting into metal when I started high school. It might have to do with the fact that I am female but either way it was pretty frustrating and insulting.

Unfortunately for the faithful; even with the pervasiveness of the genre today. People have only found new ways to scoff. I used to be ridiculed mercilessly for being a satanist, or a weirdo, I was hounded for being gay because the bands wore makeup then. I was repeatedly sought out for problems at school and for being a druggie. You have some of those I'm sure coupled with the new ones, accusations of playing a role, or trying to be noticed. Keep on keeping on! The whole community is at your back like a strong wind. We're a tight and friendly community weather outsiders believe it or not! It's weird how nobody seems to insist that liking certain kinds of movies, or certain types of food, or most types of music or literature is "just going through a phase" - seems like it's just the rock fans (and especially metal fans) who always get crap for "going through a phase", and fans of certain kinds of genre fiction (like sci-fi and fantasy - especially comic book fans and anime fans tend to get a raw deal for their taste in entertainment; I'm not crazy about comics and anime and animation in general, but i gotta feel bad for the crap those guys get....)
I think it's worth making a rough comparison to genre fiction, because metal music is like a musical version of genre literature like horror, science fiction, and fantasy, from the lyrics, to the cover art, to the music itself. And to this day, literature snobs, like music snobs, will barely give horror, sci-fi, and fantasy literature anything but the smallest, grudging nod of approval for a few exceptions (Poe, Hawthorne, and maybe a dash of Lewis Carroll here, a bit of Tolkien there.....)
Anyway, rock and metal has been "a phase" for something like the last 70 years, and science fiction and fantasy "a phase" since the pulp era, but the fans of this sort of thing have generally only gotten more fanatical over time. Being a rock and metal fan these days isn't very different from being a jazz or opera fan: a bit of a weird and insular subculture, but one that's here for the long haul... only, it's one that the snobs will only allow the occasional grudging "safe" exception through (The Beatles) as OK to listen to without being branded a juvenile troglodyte who needs to grow up....

Funny thing is that metal shows here in the great city of Guelph Ontario prove that it isn’t just a phase for lots of us metal heads. The fans that show up are usually pretty immersed into it, where it becomes a part of their identity. Smaller crowds, but much more intense fans. The musicians themselves are usually pretty chill too, probably because they have an outlet that non metalheads usually don’t. Had a bad day? Mosh it out! Metal isn’t rebellion, it’s a wonderful combination of art, power and therapy!

I never saw it quite as being rebellious, so to speak, as a kid but, back then, I definitely felt like an outcast (well, more of one than usual) listening to metal when I was going through high school, a place where rap and pop were dominant. In the late 2000s, for me, I was still a budding metalhead with very little understanding of the culture. There was just something about metal that scratched my itch for a different style of music that was absolutely nothing like the stuff all my peers or my family were listening to. It was a matter of taste and my tastes didn't quite align with everyone else's. They still don't. How many black people out there like black metal, let alone love black metal with a burning passion like I do? Little to none, I bet.

I had long hair because I wanted to fit in. I wore the shirts because I felt like a walking billboard. Back in 1986 I saw someone with long hair and a Post Mortem t shirt (Post Mortem were a local band from here in Boston) and I thought "That kid over there is in on it". I don't listen to metal or embracing heavy metal culture because I want attention, or want to be a rebel, it's just a hobby and a passion, like any passion or hobby. It's only because I like it. I don't see a rebel as someone who does things just to want attention. But someone who goes against the mainstream or the establishment for a reason, like political, ideologically, or in a sense of worldview, becoming an outlaw biker, survivalist living in a commune etc. I describe a true rebel as someone who has a stance he/she holds sacred and don't want to conform, even though everyone around them hates it or thinks is too radical. But he/ she chose those political or philosophical ideologies and worldviews because he / she truly believes in them, and not only for being rebellious.

Honestly I never really thought of metal as a rebellious way. What got me into metal genres is due to loving the sounds and everything and then later though out the years I started opening up more n more to new music. If being honest I don’t really deck out everything I mostly wear my band shirt and jeans n shoes during the day and also wearing a jacket n sometimes my biker jacket if it’s really cold out.

In the old days, being a hippie, punk, metalhead etc., meant that you WERE rebelling, simply by being one. It was a statement. It went against the grain. It meant you weren't taking orders. Nowadays, it's such a safe thing that younger metalheads don't really have the same experiences or context to really understand it all. Older people still think like it's 30 or 50 years ago, sometimes, which is why they react in certain ways. My mother's own friends tried to convince her that I was a womanizing drug fiend when I was a teen because I had long hair and a leather jacket. When we were kids, my friends got jumped by adults, with 1 even having his face stomped. The cop who came out basically said it was our fault for the way we looked, and drove off.

Yeah, man. Eh, I don't know. The subculture aspect of metal fandom is appealing, but I've never felt that it was enough to stand on its own. As in, it's cool to piss people off in that you like something that others don't, but it's not enough by itself. I'm 49 and obviously I'm far beyond metal fandom being a form of rebellion. It just fucking rocks.

My old art teacher asked me if thrash metal was something people listen to when they're suicidal. I shit you not. And I remember this one jerk back when I was in high school who gave me shit over my Megadeth shirt, saying I was only wearing it because I was a freshman.
Who would've thought people are so uninformed when it comes to liking music, amiright?

So personally, ive just never been into other genres really. As a kid my dad was always playing classic rock. my step mom was big into country. dear sweet baby Satan do i hate country with a passion. id rather have rusty nails jammed under my fingernails than listen to that shit.
anyways, in high school my dad sold me his old records and i really heard Black Sabbath for the first time, more than a couple of the hits, really heard them. after that i wanted more. louder, heavier music and over the years ive gotten into metal. i dont pretend shit, i listen to what i like. if others dont like it then too bad. its not to be edgy or outside the norm, its just good music. ill be 32 this year, its not a phase, im not a moon. its a lifestyle.

Id like to recommend a band, check out Oathbreaker i kinda want to know what they are because ive heard different things about what subgenre they are, some say Blackend hardcore, ive also heard "Grey metal" and if i had to reccomend an album to review it would be Rheia but in my opinion the album is amazing up until "Immortals" not that the other tracks are bad, they only have 3 albums but they're all great!

I think it's an interesting topic for discussion and no, I don't think metal is a "phase" if you're in it, you're in for life. However, when it comes to metal being rebellious or not, I'd say it's a two sided coin.

If you get into metal and your parents hate that you do, then it could be called rebellion. I remember a time when i was 11/12 that my mum disliked the fact i listened to music that had swearing in it. But i think she quickly realised the swearing in the music wasnt that bad

I think it's possible to like the music, the style and feel part of an anti-culture. Though Metal has never been as rebellious as Punk, you could say some types of metal are a rebellion against mainstream pop culture. Black Metal, Crossover Punk/Metal, and other extreme metal. But to say someone is just going through a rebellious phase simply because they are dressing in black and listening to metal is super generalizing. I grew up in the late 80's and early 90's when hard rock and metal was at it's highest trendiness, and some of my friends at the time did listen to some Metallica, Pantera and Guns 'n Roses they obviously didn't like metal or hard rock that much, since they abandoned it after awhile. Years later some would actually ask me in a tone like "you still listen to that stuff?!" and i would answer "we'll yeah, but i listen to a lot of other bands too. Metal is more than Metallica and Pantera you know". And so i guess it's possible that some did actually go through "a phase", but lets not put everyone in that box right?

In my opinion Most metal musicians just use rebellious image and lyrics cause their music is loud and loudness is naturally supposed to feel rebellious. And the metal fans Often try to represent that their music is rebellious though it has no clear connection to rebellion. And people who don’t listen to it pretty much have no clue about the most threatening Imagery users and those who are the loudest like death, grind and black metal. They just listened to famous radio bands who are a bit Louder than the usual music they listened to.The famous bands mostly talk about love, unity, mental pain, intimidation and a bit of satanism which I think is even less rebellions than Billie Eillish.

It's ridiculous. Metal is just a genre, just like any other genre of music. Can you imagine if people started saying to fans of pop, rap, country, or what have you "You only like this because you're being rebellious"? It would be ridiculous. Like goddamn, just let people enjoy whatever kind of music they want, regardless of the genre. I don't know so much about now if just because the attitude towards metal doesn't seem so negative or have this sort of boogeyman like image in the media anymore (now that the "Satanic Panic" isn't really a thing now), but hopefully kids getting into metal nowadays won't get so much shit for it.

  • @draug7966

Personally i think metal may attract a lot of people who are somewhat individualists or non-conformist in one way or another so the whole rebellious thing is not completely off, but listening to metal or wearing bandshirts for the sole purpose of being rebellious? No, that´s not the point of it, it´s about the music first and foremost.

I mean the rebellion part is not by any means the most important factor. Enjoying the music is. but when you live in a deeply religious country like mine, where crooked pastors and priests use faith to manipulate people into political projects, there is also a rebellion motivation to it, at least for me
