Spirit Beside Me - Pilot Episode | Synopsis
Thousands of years ago, a King (Kue Lee) of the Hmong Kingdom orders his most trusted Royal Guard (Yujin Thao) to inspect a village that people say have been attacked. The Daughter of the King (Sua Vang) who has seer-like abilities warns the Royal Guard not to go. The Royal Guard, loyal to the King and kingdom, obeys the orders; he travels out with his men.
The Royal Guard with his soldiers sees a small shelter suspicious in the woods. The shelter looked as if it was just recently abandoned with food still warm, but everything seems to be empty.
…or so they thought.

Am I only one who think this is much better than usual Hmong movies?
Are they Hmong Americans? Because this is much better than the Hmong movies in Southeast Asia.
All of them are except for one who is the main guy character who is Hmong Thai (I might be wrong about the rest but I only know one).
Anime/Kpop Lover some of them is hmong thai. But the king n princess r hmong American for sure. Love the ending ep. lol. But the main guy he married in Asturias Yujin thao his name. But yeah gotta admit it’s way better than yengtha her movies wannabe Chinese lol.
i should say first that i will not choose sides nor favoring anything on what im going to say here but to be very very honest. i think this is still far from what i would consider "GOOD". i know some of you or even alot of you will disagree with that but thats okay. everyone has their own experiences and knowledge about this topic of cinematography or film making so i'm not gonna say much about that, whether you think this is good enough or not so much, or maybe not even close, i'll leave that for you to decide but since you're comparing this to our usual hmong movies that are produced in thailand, that makes its very interesting because i must be honest with you that i still think even some our old movies are still at the very least better than this. now i'm not saying they did a bad job or anything but i'd definitly say that it was not up to my expectations. when i was watching the concept video from the director himself, i gotta admitted i was quite excited and hyped for this movie, and i had also waited for quite sometime too with my excitement expecting something new or something great that we'd ever yet to see in our hmong films, or ya know something new that i could have hope for because as growing up watching our hmong movies, i understand that we're lacking alot of things in the film entertainment category and so i was really hoping for something great from this movie. however most of the stuff they did in this film was really not anything new that we'd never seen, so since you're comparing it to our hmong movies that are produced in thailand, i must say that to me, i think its the opposite XD , in a friendly way though so no butt hurt alright lol. now if onsider that this movie was a 50k budget film compare to most of our hmong movies that are produced in thailand with only 30k max or even lower, that should give you a good enough reason to start with, but if you still dont get it then i'll point them out for ya, im just a little bit tooo lazy to write an entire essay so i think that budget alone should give you an idea why i say that. but just a quick comparison for you so you dont have to think too hard on why, lets just compare this to these movies like nuj nplaib thiab ntxawm - the original movie, pov sis txam, npaj thaub, nkaus npua teb, ncaub fab, and other ones that i dont remember their names, these hmong movies are still the best that we'd ever produced so far even now in 2019, and yes i said now. even know days there is not a hmong director or producer i know that could produced anything that is at least better than these few movies i've mentioned, and im not even expecting something 10x or just 2x better? not even 1.5x, at least just something a little better like 1x maybe yet its still hard to come by. so if you just think about that, you know we've got a long way to go buddy. i know we've come along way and we're improved a little bit since then but i gotta say that it wasn't anything at all because from what i can see from these newer generations are just the technical improvement due to the generation of technologies moving forward only, not our skills and knowledge, its still a cheap ghetto movie but just in 1080p instead of 480p lol. like i've said, due to technologies moving forward only, not us :(
@@txlec99...I agree with you 99%.
Asian film industry I love kue Lee and yujin and veness omg
Love it!!! Don't care about the negative comments! I love it! Hmong people have come a long way and I love it! We're moving forward!
You're right Hmong people always complain no matter how good the movie is, they're soo good at complaining but they can't even do shit.
Chi yang, where's the rest of the episodes? Since you love it and this show was supposed to take off but looks like everyone paid $50k for a pilot episode
I'm glad this is in English sub, now other people from other country's can watch our movies and get to know our culture. HDrama💕Keep it going y'all
everyone in the comment section suddenly became a director lmao
Artsy right!!?? Lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is the only way a director will improve if there are both negative and positive feedbacks.
@@bounv6617 Good constructive feedback yes, but useless negative misspelled words, No. LOL
@@hawjtsim
lol what a stupid comment.
Thank you for adding captions for us non-Hmong viewers. Blown away by what you accomplished with limited resources.
I honestly thought this wasn't bad. I feel like Hmong filmmaking have improved over the years. We've definitely come a long way. However, as for this, I thought the action scenes and some of the acting could use more work though. Something that doesn't come off too corny or unnatural. Other than that, great job guys! If this is done right, this could very well be a successful HDrama. We're heading in a right direction. Just need a few more improvements is all. Btw, this kinda gave me Game of Thrones or Goblins (Kdrama) vibe as well. Not bad. I'd personally like to see where this goes. But I guess not if this is discontinued.
Hmong movies are about 2 hours long. They paid $50k for a 19 mins pilot episode could have been done here in the USA. I wouldn't want another episode or season of this show but im sure they wouldn't be able to afford it at all too
@@KingAllpha321 Even if they wouldn't be able to afford it at all, this is still a step in the right direction of Hmong filmmaking. And even if this is just it, at least it's something that can inspire Hmong filmmakers to be creative and to be better. Just sucks Hmong people try to bring other Hmong people down when we all should inspire each other and improve each other.
@@treylee7791 bro, where have you been? Hmong people have been making movies like this way before 2019. Let me guess, you haven't see them movies because you don't care to but then you see this one and you think its a huge step forward for Hmong people. And you do realize it was the fans that donate majority of the funds and in the end, they got screwed over. Just sucks that you know these people well and support them, but for others you just dont care because they are not your friends. Keep it up dude.
@@KingAllpha321 Aye man. I know they've been making movies like this wayyyy back then. In fact, I grew up watching Hmong movies with my grandparents. I have ALWAYS been a huge supporter of Hmong filmmaking regardless if I knew them or not. Now that I've grown up and look back at the old movies, it's nostalgic for sure, but also corny and lacks of quality. What I meant was the quality, vfx, and filmmaking has improved over the years. Which is a right step in the Hmong filmmaking industry. Story wise and acting wise, not there yet. But I'm sure we'll improve there too as we did with the quality of filmmaking. Since there's a lot of Hmong American kids these days, I'm sure they'd want to go to film schools and whatnot. We have online tutorials too. Which helps a lot. That's probably one of the reasons why Hmong filmmaking has improved over the years. Btw, I don't even know the people in here personally. So don't assume I know these people and that they are my friends, DangerMan V. I just like films in general, and I like supporting any filmmakers in general. Especially being Hmong, I like seeing Hmong filmmaking improve and being better in quality. That's all. It makes me proud as a Hmong, personally, because we've come a long way. That's why I said it sucks other Hmong people are being so damn negative towards other Hmong people. Smh.
@tom young I agree. I think the OG actors are fine with their Hmong since they've spoken it throughout their life and were born speaking Hmong unlike the new gen Hmong people who had American schools and who were essentially raised into the American culture. Gotta admit, I'm not great great at Hmong myself, but I'm trying to be great at it again these days. Gotta keep the Hmong culture and language alive, man. But back to the acting, I'm sure the delivery of lines and how some of them pronounce their Hmong are what makes it unnatural too. Learning and pronouncing your Hmong is one thing, which should be important for these Hmong content/films (because that'd be like a Chinese person not speaking their Chinese properly in a movie), but stepping into your character's shoes naturally is another thing. To anyone who wants to be in the acting industry of any kind, I'd say at least join an acting class of some sort (could be online class too since that's more accessible these days) to gain more knowledge and to better yourself. That's always a plus. But overall, these guys aren't too bad. Just some minor stuff they need to fix, and they'll be fine.
I followed it from filming and editing, knowing full well that it was set in present day with flashbacks of the past, yet I still can't help wishing it was set in the past. I'm not the only one who feels this way, right?
I don't think they have the budget to keep the setting located in Laos or wherever they went
This first pilot episode is definitely heading toward a great direction into the modern Hmong films era. In my opinion, I believe this type of film is something new from the director genre so got to give him credits and support no matter what. Been a fan of the director since his Hmong web series (the ones with the lady and about her mom not liking him- melo funny drama type of feeling). If you have watched those, then you would have got a great feeling at the end of this episode going into the upcoming episodes. Looking forward to it! Fighting!!! Can’t wait!! 😎🙌
WOW!!!!!................. Just WOW.........
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This here is so beautifully done. I never thought my Hmong people would do anything great as this. Not doubting my people but I never thought there would be so many dedicated Hmong talent welling to go this far. Everyone who’s involve in this deserves the applaud and hopefully open up more opportunities for many Hmong people out there..... The cinematography is top notch, best I’ve seen in a Hmong production. Acting was good, dialogue was delivered great and the tone was consistent through out. Just wow...... Keep it up everyone, people who tries to put you or this project down, don’t let it affect you. Keep pushing and take them as criticism and be better from here. So glad to see this turned out so well. For this pilot I give it a 10/10. SO AWESOME!!!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I’ll be looking forward to your next project...... YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!👏👍✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊
Great concept but some feedback for improvement from a nobody-viewer who's a big fantasy nerd:
1. Setting design
- It's based in 2500 BC but the setting design looks way too modern. It breaks the immersion. White cubic tree pots that look like they're from Ikea, the palace room looks like my uncle's funeral home -- too western, the throne looks like one I'd see in a Medieval Britain kid's museum instead of a 2500 BC Hmong kingdom, the cooking pot that looks like the one I bought at the Asian market last week, the necklace looks like a cheap candy machine-one that I'd get at Hmong Village, the swords that look like they've never been used before -- why not just stick with the rustic Hmong machete design that is iconic to our culture instead of going for a shiny Roman Gladius-styled sword?
2. Acting
- Not bad actually for a pilot episode...until the forest fight. You have a swarm of mindless villagers attacking, but the group of scouts are stopping to talk to each other in full heartfelt sentences during the battle? Just too unrealistic. This is a live action film, not an anime.
3. Characters
- The costumes aren't that bad besides the Roman Gladius swords. But again, everyone looks too clean and too modern. The male hairstyles are immersion-breaking. Most of them look like 21st century Hmong guys who just came back from the korean hair salon and not 2500 BC Hmong warriors. The long-hair soldier was the only one who looked the part because yes in 2500 BC long scruffy hair was probably a thing for males.
Overall, the setting needs to look more rustic, ancient, and less western. I get that it's a fantasy but this is a live action portrayal of a 2500 BC Hmong Kingdom in a time turmoil and uncertainty. Take pride in our culture and create a setting that resonates with our roots. Straw housing structures in the mountains, Hmong machetes, a rough and unforgiving region where we wouldn't have justin-bieber-haircuts and porcelain clean faces and clothes. We are a nomadic ethnic group that stayed true to our roots and refused to be conquered throughout the ages, and I wish this could be portrayed better. I really like the concept behind this great project but it relies too heavily on western-inspired modern designs. Still gonna support you guys regardless. Keep up the great effort. You guys are paving the way for future Hmong artists and movie directors.
Yes, definately a great concept. But it needs to be more inspired by our culture and history. Most ancient Chinese, Japanese or Korean series is based off their history and culture....even if it was fantasy related. Be nice to see a drama that is hmoob culture focus. If it ever does become a hit drama.....it should be something that leaves behind good things in the back of people's mind when they wonder "What is Hmong?". A bit of hmoob history with a fictional twist is cool as long as it's hmong inspired. Something that would make people not think it's just another typical Hmong movie. Their needs to be a balance when it comes to portraying certain emotions.
You’re right this is just down right a bad movie. Lol
This is amazing! Everything from the cinematography, music, acting, costumes! This really displays how much effort and hard work was put into the pilot episode! Great job to the entire team who made this happen!
I really can’t wait for the next episode! I was expecting just a regular fantasy drama but then modern time suddenly appear made me feel so EXCITED!
Wow! This exceeded my expectations and I can’t wait to see the rest of this film. I think it’s a great storyline and transitioned smoothly. I don’t know why people are so confused?? Lol. The film has a strong cast and Sua Vang did such a good job, I’ve never seen any of her work but definitely look forward to see more from her. She’s probably one of the best modern Hmong actress I’ve seen by far. Good job to the whole team! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
This is an improvement to the hmong movies! The part that bothers me the most is the fighting scene. It doesn't look real. That kongmeng guy was getting pinned down by a bunch of people/monster but when called, he stood up immediately? If you added blood effect through each slashing with the sword, it would look even more real rather than when yujin have blood on his arm at the end. Overall, I look forward to the next episode and see how much you guys have improve.
pajnpis xiong I laughed when I saw this months ago. "Oh yup I'm here" *stands up*
Same, that needs improvement, somehow.
lmfaooo koob meng part was funny as hell! lol
My Chinese friend from China said the movie was dumb too.
Movie is dead you all. They gonna have to fund raiss another $50k thousand just to make another 20 minute episode
Better than expected!!! Everyone making comments on how horrible it is but lets not forget that this is Hmongly-wood and not Hollywood. I'm very proud of all the actresses and actors. Keep it up guys!!! When is the next one coming?
I was one of the donators for this. Sucks that the drama didn’t continue. I hope the director still keep on working on his dream!
The actors and actresses were lacking in acting and dialogue was kind of off. If they put a little time into really tapping into thair emotions, it'll be great! Scene transitions was kind of rough.
All that aside, wow. Pat yourself on the back, Touacha. This is a huge step for Hmong cinematography. We could pin point all the flaws in the pilot but we have to remember this is a low budget, crowd funded project. The FX and props are good quality and the did bring out the best with what they have. Scenery settings were beautiful and really bringing out the moment. Throughout the pilot, only a couple actors could really bring out some emotions. Towards the end of the episode with that crying scene. Wow. Got me right in the feels. The story doesn't lag or drag on and it gets to the point and you know what's going on. This drama looks original and has exceeded my expectations as a film fanatic. Great work to Touacha and the rest of the crew. Looking forward to what he brings next next. Best of luck and great job.
8/10!
Ka Yang I agree bro! It’s getting better and better. High fives for all the hard workers actors n actresses great job. Wish there was a queen too. But over all give great 👍🏻 for everyone working hard to put this together! I felt my heart touched. Great job!
I agree that they need to put emotions into their acting.
And you guys can do better?
I like that we're thinking outside the box. Hmong fantasy drama, can't wait for the next parts
MESSAGE TO HMONG AMERICAN WRITERS: If you're gonna have the original script in English, at least translate it to more meaningful Hmong words. As a lot of people has voiced out, it comes off really unnatural. For example, instead of "Kuv tau dag koj," (because Hmong people don't really say that in this kind of context) Yujin should have said something along the lines of, "Koj ua tsis tau li wb cov lus cog tseg." Yea, it's longer but more nautural lol But overall, this episode was good! I especially loved the ending lol will be waiting for the next episodes! 😁
Nicely done my Fellow Hmong actors and actress. I don’t care about all these negative comments because that’s all they know so f**k them haters. We need to encourage our people not discourage them. Can’t wait to see your next episode 👍👍👍
I’m still in love with the chanting song! ❤️ Hopefully there will be an album for this series!
Was just browsing youtube and landed on this video. As someone who loves to watch films, I clicked play and watched it with subtitles. The cinematography and special effects were nicely done. The fight scenes left a lot to be desired. That was just painful to watch. The fight scene and some of the acting didn't seem natural. Then again, they're not professionals, so it's expected. I'm sure they'll improve with more experience over time. The story seems to be set in ancient times, so I think it would of been better if the actor's hair matched that time period. The princess, when she was crying, should of at least had more tears. I only seen one streak of tears coming down her face at the very end. Tears would of helped portray her emotions even more. Anyhow, this was just my observation. With the limited crowd sourced budget, I think you and the cast did the best you could with it. Good luck with your future episodes!
The one thing I hate about Hmong actors and actresses is not showing any emotions. Dull monotoned facial expressions but props to the guy with long hair. Did a better job than yujin with acting.
Overall seems promising with a good tease. And mad Props to the costume designer.
Hmong videography is getting better and better year by year....
With a smaller budget than Spirit Beside Me, I believe Spirit DAWN delivers a more exciting and intense sensation and satisfaction to the audience. No hates, but with a 50k budget, all of us expected more. However, I believe what needs to improve are dialogues and editing work. Other than that, this pilot is isn't too bad.
I thought it was going okay until it switched to THE PRESENT and I was like NOOOO! NOT THE TYPICAL CLICHE PAST/PRESENT/FUTURE STORY?!?! I think I would look more forward to this if everything was just set during that past....
Honestly, this pilot episode was a bit better than I expected. Good cinematography! The director, producers, and editors have done a great job on that. I was thinking that the fighting scene could have been a bit better, or come off more natural? I think the scene I thought was kind of random was when the soldier Koob Meej stood up from the ghosts, or zombies and took the other two soldiers away. Also, my Miao friend from China thought it was done good too, but he felt some improvements can make this series a bit better as it goes on. Good luck!
Your miao friend is very honest. Also, lots of love to you.😘
lmfaooo you are so on point! the part where koob meej stood up was so RANDOM lmfaooo i was actually confused if it was a troll moment or not. but overall, i'm pretty impressed :p
Anime/Kpop Lover Thank you. I’ll let my friend know that. Lots of Hmong-Chinese DO watch lots of Hmong-American/Thai films and music videos. Just need to let the directors and actors know that. :)
The Truth I understand. :) I wasn’t trying to be mean though. Just trying to give constructive criticism because I do see potential in this series. So far, this is one of the Hmong film/series I personally enjoy, so I’m waiting for the next episode now.
Yeah i couldn't agree more
I always want to see such a wonderful movie, but every time I worry that the actors and producers have no money. Thanks to every actor, to the director, to the props, to those who still have dreams about Hmong movies, you gave us A lot of fantasy stories, respect!
For those asking how Jujin’s character die, take a closer look @9:08 and @5:25; this sets the premise for the rest of the series.
The way the actors and actress perform their dialogues just comes off unnatural.
doing the vocal recordings in a studio with no added spacial dynamics made it a little fake.. well.. for me. made it feel "dubbed". Quality of the scenery and clothing design are top notch. fight choreography lacked extremely and there were too many close-ups I felt like the fights were "in your face".. music was.. well.. meh.. piano music (without vocals) reminded me of westworld. some uhm.. detail to characters would of been great.. didn't know who the baddies were, who the girl was... etc. but then, this was just the pilot. :]
finding out that this was started from a kickstarter, pretty good outcome i guess. :)
@FUN FACT Why does that matter if you can understand her in the movie? Her pronounciation and enunciation of Hmong words in the movie were decent. 🤷 Being able to fluently speak a particular language in real life is not and should not be a requirement to acting. We have a lot of international actors/actresses who barely speak English in real life star in Hollywood movies speaking English.
@FUN FACT So can you not understand her in the movie? The point of good acting is looking the part and playing a character well. Actors play singers in movies and many can't sing in real life and need voice overs with real singers but no one's complaining because they're ACTORS. While I can speak, read, and write Hmong, I don't feel the need to judge my fellow Hmong people who can't nor make them feel less because I understand the challenge being a stateless group of people who lives biculturally no matter where we are.
Chalk that up to bad ADR. It definitely feels off
This is a huge mile stone for us Hmong but I wish the actor and actress would tap into thier character more. The main girl cried a lot but there was no tear drops which made it hard to believe she’s in love with him. :( but overall, pretty good for a low budget drama. Keep it up.
Here goes my first UA-cam comment ever 😄. Don't mind all the naysayers. Sure, it may not be perfect but this is really awesome and a huge step up for our community. Great job to all the people who worked on this. I'm loving it so far and can't wait for the next episode!
Appreciate the kind words! We shall keep pushing forward!
Making a drama is not an easy job.
Love the acting. The best Hmong movie I've ever seen. Love when she was singing.
Shoua is so beautiful and Yujin is very handsome. Good pick for this movie.
Be real. Terrible acting
Obviously you don’t watch much hmong movie. Hearing you say this is the best movie is like saying a hobo is a millionaire, never possible. You need to learn to speak better hmoob, watch more older hmong movies before you try to encourage these bad movies to continue.
Beautiful acting. Beautiful hmong movie love and action.. Please more!!!
I love how the story line tells how it happen from the beginning. Can wait for the next story line. Love it😊
At least this better than Nom Phaj movies. They're so beautiful and handsome. I'm so proud of Hmong people, they come a long way.
(SPOILER REVIEW, these are my opinions, I'm not a professional film critic. Just a viewer.)
This short film pilot was good. Not the worst and not the best. It still has flaws but every film has flaws so that's normal. The opening intro was really good. As in the narrative speaking intro, if you seen any Netflix original show opening, actually think WALKING DEAD opening, then you can tell that this film had a good opening with the music and art cg. The beginning of the film introducing the king and royal guards actors along with the princess was good. Not much to say about it, but it did well to establish that the king was somehow a cruel king going far as sentencing a man to death immediately after he brought news, but soon we find out that king he's been corrupted by a spirit and that's why he did what he did. As for the the kings acting. I thought it was going to be cheesy but at the end of film I have to say he was the best actor for me. I'm not gonna rate the other actors because they did fine, they had strong moments and like all actors, there was some areas where they could improve. Skipping to the fight scene, I'm pretty sure everyone had a problem with this scene. Yes this scene could had done better and I'm also not going to point out all the flaws because everyone's complained about it but the only thing I will complain from the scene is one detail that made me think "I think everyone's going to notice that", and that is the blood, where is the blood from killing the possessed villagers? why isnt the blood on the obvious clean silver short sword? the blood only appears at the end of our main male leads death. Just that one small detail that I had a problem with, because if the blood was evident in the beginning I think it could had heighten the drama of the fight to show that it was indeed a life or death situation. As for the chemistry of the male and female lead. It was fine. won't judge because it's the first episode so it was fine. The female lead singing at first bothered me bit but then I changed my mind, I could see how the director wanted to implement that singing into the scene to build a sense of longing and sadness for the girl and it worked well. Also i thought that the singing might be her saying a spell but thats just a theory! a film theory! Now to end this, the ending! I'm talking about the present day scene. It was expected, I saw that coming and did expect it base on the title. Also if you watched any K DRAMA or Anime you already know where it's heading and how the two leads are going to interact in the present. Overall, I want a refund. Joking aside. The film was good.
You’re wrong this is the worse hmong movie made in America. Period.
Work on the acting, also a longer sword is needed. Overall, a wonderful pilot. So proud of my Hmoob ppl.
LOVE IT! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! MY HMONG PEOPLE ARE GOING PLACES!!! 👍🏻
Really nice! You all did a very good job and really am expecting to see the new upcoming episodes! You guys did the best you guys can! And I am really proud of you all! Don’t listen to the negative comments talking about “need more improvement” they don’t know how much money is used to make this episode and how much time was took. Definitely can’t wait and I’m actually hoping to see the episodes more longer at least 30 minutes or more! Keep up the good work 💙
WHHHAAAAAT????????? I paid $5.99 for this on VIMEO and two days ago someone just posted it for FREE?????????????? Ughhhhhh
It's ok!! Your money will be used to improve and continue the series!
it's fine, u are supporting the film! 5.99 does not hurt
Peev Xwm yeah you right!
You should ask for a refund.
Tou Vang hhhhhh
Btw, just wanna throw this out there, Windstruck Production, but you guys should get VinceXiongMusic to do scores for you guys for any future projects. I think he has some amazing music, and I'd love to see him scoring on Hmong projects like your guys'. Or any filmmakers/singers who want music created for them. Just throwing his name out there because I think he deserves it.
Damn, quality is great for a start. He was always the king of hdrama..this is great.
Great job! Love to see Hmong movies is showing improvement. As an audience, I was hoping for a historical drama series, with more of the Hmong China background setting/ costume
Thank you, Windstruck Productions! Let's all encourage and inspire one another guys.
Love it... it's a start to something bigger and better
We’ve come a long way. Going in the right direction. Picture quality was way better than I’ve seen in the past. Keep up the great work.
Totally awesome! The only knock I have on this, and idk why it bothers me so much, is that most men’s hairstyle are too modern. Gel? Faded fresh cut? It throws off the traditional vibe. Our ancestor’s were thought out to be barbarians and if that’s the case then the only dude who got it right is homeboy at 4:40
That song at the end is the song I loved a lot.
Cause my mom played it so much like when I was around 5 years old , she even put on in the car
So...she was dreaming the whole time? It's a great short film. Man the haters are real!
A. C. Looks like they’re going off with a similar story of “The Myth” starring Jackie Chan. I think her modern self is dreaming of her previous love story from her past life.
It's not a short film. It's supposed to be a Hmong Drama. Kind of like a kdrama. A pilot episode means it's testing the water to see if people will like it. If they do, the series continued on with many episodes. If not, the series stop because lack of funds and support from it's audience.
I was half expecting the swords to be the Hmong knives lmao
Everyone needs to stop critiquing every part of this pilot. Yeah it's not going to win an Oscar but I appreciate the creative work behind it.
A little disappointed in how this turned out. Not quite sure what the storyline is about anymore and I feel like too much was rushed. I know it’s just a pilot episode, but nobody was introduced and we didn’t even get to meet or know the characters enough for us to feel upset about them being split up. The only person who’s acting was good was the King and I literally only watched for him 😂 but I’ll continue to support because I can tell a lot of hard work was put into it and we should always support our brothers and sisters!
This is good. The haters are going to hate. I want to see them make something better if they are going to talk. This is coming a long way from those MTT movies.

i actually really like it! There are reasons for why things happen the way the director directed it. Watch it for what it is.
People are already complaining about the acting and the way they talk etc. It’s great that the audiences are also giving feedback. That’s what the film crew needs. But come on you guys, have you guys seen hmong dubbed movies? They talk that way for the cinematic purposes of the film. It’ll just be cringy if they talk like normal everyday Hmong talk 😂
Acting is bland? Sure maybe a little. But give them a fighting a chance. Acting is hard.
Fighting scene is bad? I do agree a little LOL. I watch a lot of historical dramas myself and have seen amazing sword fights. But Hmong people aren’t necessarily war warriors that fight. So it’s ganna be a little awkward. But it’s ok 👌🏼
And pleasseeeee, you just can’t keep comparing this to Kdrama/CDrama/Jdrama that has already have an establishment of YEARS of cinematography and knows what their audiences are expecting. It’s only a pilot episode, don’t shut it down, rather hype it up and hope the next one is up to your expectations.
The fact that this is the first Hmong drama, I have very high hopes! I’m excited and am pleased with this pilot episode.
Great work! Keep it up, can’t wait to see this continue 🤗
Cinematography is the same everywhere unfortunately, it's all about budget and how well they used the money to make the show. Also sorry but you can't ask people not to compare it. It's an H-drama which was created specifically for those who watch K/C/J dramas so naturally people will make the comparison. It's good to have high hopes though, if it succeeds then we have a new industry for Hmong filmmakers.
I'm actually not comparing to any non-Hmong movies/dramas. I just think acting and dialogues are unnatural.
@@ffboi7 Hey there, thanks for the reply. Yes, I agree that cinematography is the same everywhere and the budget does play a role. However, I still don't think we should compare Hdrama to others YET. Key word - YET. This drama was not necessarily made specifically for audiences who are familiar with C/K/Jdramas. It started with a story that the writer wanted to share. A fantasy. I've imagined many of us have fantasy themed stories in our heads we once wanted to share. The difference is that the writer was able to start making this into his reality. And fantasies are similar in ideas globally so I understand the comparatives.
However, let me rephrase: not saying that we CAN'T, but rather that we SHOULDN'T compare. Sure it reaches audiences who are more familiar with non-Hmong dramas and it's definitely natural for audience to jump and compare. But we shouldn't be comparing Hdrama to other dramas quite yet because if it becomes already way too similar to a C/K/Jdrama, then Hdrama is nothing but a C/K/Jdrama "wanna-be.” And that doesn’t sound like a good connotation. Once it’s labeled as a “wanna-be,” it’s kind of hard to progress from that point. How is it that we are able to watch other dramas as their own kind (and really without much criticism) but can’t watch Hdrama as its own? That’s because it doesn’t have a well-established base yet unlike the others no matter the budget or the process. But I really do hope that one day we’ll be able to watch Hdrama as its own kind without saying stuff like “Oh, this would be better if they make it look like a scene from this Chinese drama.” Because we don’t watch a Chinese drama and go “Oh, this scene should look more like this Korean drama.” And even when a Cdrama and a Kdrama have similar fantasy themes, we don’t necessarily compare the two to each other’s. Hdrama is still a baby. It’s bound to be criticized a lot. And that’s ok. But it shouldn’t be deemed as a low quality C/K/Jdrama.
Excuse me for writing a lot. Just wanted to be clear and feel complete with my point and get it out of my head. Hopefully it make sense. lol. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Arblia man I just love your comment 💜💜 I agree completely what you said💜 Hdrama should be a little more different. Sure still needs improvement but Hmong is a whole different subject and like you said, it’s something new and not like k/c/j drama that has been there and know how to satisfy their audiences already.
Can’t wait for the actual drama!!! This is exciting for the Hmong community. We appreciate your guys hard work! I definitely am here for all the support.
RED camera making a huge difference here. Nicely Done. Have your actors and actresses take things more seriously and this series will turn out just fine.
I can’t with their mini swords and Burger King 👑 crown 🤣
Ha funny.
This such an improvement to hmong movie! They are doing a very nice job overall, the fighting scene could need a little work then it is good. mostly hmong movie in the US are Cringy and all these stuff but not this one. I actually watch the whole episode! I know people say the acting is bad but how would you feel if you have to act? you will be nervous and shy, plus you have to speak hmong language so yeah give them a break it is not easy to act people. Aside from that I can't wait to see the rest! #HDRAMA
Can't believe it's already been a couple years. I like the potential of this hdrama and hope more things can come out of it.
The first thing other hmong people look for in a hmong movie is acting, but when they watch kdrama and such they just watch it freely without having to critique on it LOL. These acting are good enough to be in a movie, If you watch any other kdrama and pay attention to their acting. They arent topnotch as well.
@Olympic TaeKwonDo To The Victory
I agree. My family love watching K-dramas because we can see many Korean TV shows on our national TV services in Romania. But, we sometimes confusing if those subs are correct translation or it's just because Koreans have too different emotions to what we Romanians have...
Maybe because Kdrama has way better acting... Just saying.
Very good!!! Acting not bad either. The hero and heroine are both very good looking. Thumbs up. Great job!!! 👏👏👏
This is one of the best upgrade "cinematic graphic" so far in all Hmong movie productions in the last 30 years! A little more work on the Action and Vocal Sounds, this movie production could grow BIG in the future for the "Hmonglywood" Cinema.... Keep up the Great work guys!...
I think this is a great project and am so glad to see the continued improvement in Hmong entertainment. People love to criticize because it's easy to do so but have no idea how much work and effort is put into this.kind of quality work..I applaud.the team...I believe that the our entertainment industry will continue to get better! Sure it's not perfect, but its definitely better than before..
Wow they did a great job on this film, I would love to see more.
Aww such a good storyline. Can’t wait for the next episode
Love this! Can’t wait to watch! Hmoob film has definitely come a long way! ❤️
I love Sua Vang's song "Song of Protection". Is the full audio going to be released???
I really like this, it different from Hmong movies I usually watch.... we have come a long way... it definitely caught my attention... i cant wait to see what happens next.. Keep up the good work!!!😁😊😊😊😊👍👍👍🙌🙌🙌👏👏👏
I don’t think they understand it’s not only the movie quality that they had to fix in Hmong movies, it’s the acting they need to really fix up more. Some actors have act for awhile and they seem to not be improving their acting. But bravo to the quality!
*HMONG MOVIES HAVE STEPPED UP THEIR GAME*
Where and how can we audition to be extras? I can be a great spectator, or a cook, or a poor girl.
Same. But no think they filmed it all already. Just in the process of editing :(
Second that. I don’t even need to be pay. Just to show my support.
I would love to be an enemy warrior who fights Yujin.
IKR, I want to volunteer to be the extras in the series too.
😂😂😂 me too!!!!! Haha
Supporting you guys all the way!
This will be a great commercial for Burger King
Awesome pilot. Bring on episode 1.
I absolutely love the armor wear!! Looking forward to see the next episode!!! Thanks guys keep it up!!!!
Not bad... our people's acting when talking doesn't sound natural yet but other than that I give it an 7.5/10... bravo my peeps has come a long way! Keep it up!
All the money y’all spend will lead them to do a better project. Their resources will be less limited!! God and Shaman bless y’all!
The Chinese are going laugh at this , but it's better than ever. Keep it up my Hmong peoples. You guys need puny tail ( mojtuam ) to go with your armor suits. Dress from head to toe likes the King and his daughter. Nej yeej zoo nkauj zoo nraug txaus nkaus lawm. Theeee nife or swort twb tsi ntev li my son's toy.
Wayy better than expected. Yet still need improvements on emotions and some acting would be better😉💕
I'm proud to say we hmoob people are stepping up.
A real hkd.. I believe in you can really tell a story if you wanted to. You should try to explore telling a story with originality to your story. Tell your story how are Hmong elders would tell it and just and your vision to it. Looks to kd, but good I am a big Hmong supporter so I will still follow you my brother. Keep up the good work and you will continue to grow with experiences. Good luck!
First hd Hmong production I’ve ever seen
Production wise, it was enjoyable. However, if they keep the story in ancient times, the princess needs a whole new wardrobe. They overdid her wardrobe and made her dress like an old lady. Her head piece and hair just looks so out of place. They should have went the unconventional way and dress her in tight fitting clothes. i.e. dark, short, pleaded skirt with thigh high boots and cropped top. I guess the head piece could be ok with her hair in a bun or in pig tails. The soldiers...the soldiers' armor kind of irritated me...seems like something was missing. It's like the armor was made for a cold climate but in short sleeves and didn't look thick enough.
Dialogues were too plain, they lack interest. I've seen better dialogues in text messages. Like when Yujin said "I have lied to you. Sorry" A better dialogue would be something like, "Forgive me, I can not keep the words I gave you."
Just my 2 cents...besides that, I can't wait for upcoming episodes.
Love the pilot and believe it will just get better. Im here to support. Keep it up! ❤
The BEST looking Hmong film thus far! Good work!... Looking forward to the rest.
I think this is GREAT...cant wait to see the rest and keep up the good work............
That last scene of them waking up to each other was so funny! It’s like I’m watching a Chinese drama.
I didn’t expect it to turn into a musical. Lol
But ok. Looking forward to the next episode.
Waiting on next episode ❤
I'm not into hmong movies, but I think the old school hmong movies are much better.
Lmao! the guy with the chicken is so me. 😂😂😂😂

Ha.
I wish this was an ongoing series!!!!
We're glad you enjoy the film. Series come out 2020.
Although it was only 21 minute, the story managed to make me cry. There's some stuffs needs to be improved but overall I enjoy it a lot. I love the emotions leading up to the song. The song was my favorite.
I'm not good with my hmong so here's an attempt to write the lyrics...
Ntxawm nyob dleb lo ze,
Kuv thov lub ntuj,
Ntiv thaiv tus kuv hlub,
Saib sua txhua nws Yuav poob,
Tsis pub dhlau Kev pem,
Roj nws rov qab rau kuv
Roj nws rov qab rau kuv….
Dang what a twist 😲 I want to watch part 2 now 😢
Better than what I can do, lol. Can't wait for the rest! :)
