Nedd inspired me to start running a few months ago. Hello Sport exposed him to me. Then David Goggins took over my algorithm. I'm now the best version of myself, running 6 days a week, thank you Nedd.
Any athlete that can knock out 1000 miles in under 14 days deserves a nod of respect. A lot of pretty good weekend warriors don’t cover that in a year!
I think he means that Jake doesn’t beat boxers in his weight class but does well to promote himself. Like Nedd has done runs that have been really well promoted but he isn’t competitive with elite ultra marathon runners. They are also both bringing more attention to their sports. Definitely can’t compare their personalities though.
For real! Everybody's got their thing, I guess. If I found out someone I didn't like ran across an entire continent for charity at any age, I'd give them a high five. If I found out they did it at 24 I'd probably change my opinion about them! lol

I completed my first ultra this year and have been consuming ultra forums, videos, books, podcasts for 3 years as I slowly went from 1 mile to a half marathon to a full and then beyond and I hadn’t heard of this guy until I clicked this video. In my experience the ultra community has been like my time around triathlon. People that like to suffer like this seem to inherently respect anyone else to join us in whatever brought us to the same event. I found this clip odd. Not sure what I expected but this felt so foreign in its title and it’s content to what I have experienced. Not saying he hasn’t had this experience but for such a small community (not many people do ultras bc it’s a bit hard to explain why to do it at all) it’s shocking it’s still got that much if a diversity in experience. There were people at the events I attended that were clearly wealthy and some that were clearly not. Some were never going to finish and knew it and others were aiming for course records. Everyone just seemed to be glad enough people took interest enough ti pay for an event to exist at all. Not really room to gatekeep if you want some of these races to exist.
Just follow the rules of the sport. Register your run properly (he didn't so any record wouldn't have been ratified). Don't run superlaps because that's not permitted. Don't claim you are setting out to break a record that you haven't the pedigree or ability to break. It wasn't a legit record attempt it was a fund-raiser so call it what it is. Full marks for bringing attention to an important issue, lots of credit for raising money towards it. And running a thousand miles is an incredible achievement. That's all something to be admired for. Just don't disrespect the sport in the process, that's all.
who gives a fuck he raised shit tons of money for charity. These haters who supposedly has the pedigree to do it yet won't do it anyway? Why don't they go run for charity instead of hating on this guy lol
The video title asked why the ultrarunning community dislikes Ned. It's not the charity part or even the achievement part - I reckon everyone looks up to him for those aspects. It's making up his own rules and using them to lift his own profile. Some people would probably like to see him race competitive events too rather than individual challenges but thats his choice (Ron Grant and Pat Farmer did the same). You can disagree or think that's petty - that's fine - but that's part of the answer to the video question and the only point I was making.
I used to run races with Catra Corbett and wondered why anyone would want to draw that much attention to themselves, but nowadays every other kid looks like her. I guess she was just ahead of her time!
There’s two types of ultra communities, these young guys running ridiculous miles on pavement for views and then there’s the guys running ridiculous miles in the mountains who do it for the love not the views.
Crazy to say he's doing it for views. He was doing overnight ultras in Sydney years back with no following. Read his book, look at his history - he has views now because he's gone and done the things he set out to and amazed many people. You're literally the type of person he's describing; miserable and upset that someone can gain such popularity and success doing what they love.
I’m confused… was there actually any real hate towards him?! My experience of the ultra community (in Europe at least.. haven’t experienced elsewhere).. are all awesome and super humble and supportive of anyone doing running… is it a real issue?!
A lot of ultra runners I’ve spoken to, get upset that he’s getting more attention, sponsorship and money than the elite runners because of his marketing. I’ve heard boxers say the same thing about people in their sport, surfers say the same about people in their sport. But the reality is sponsorships in sport is about selling products. That can come from winning, but Nedd has found his niche to attract sponsors by inspiring people and connecting with a bigger audience.
