As someone who is quite a bit better than the average cod player and solo player, I get screwed by SBMM constantly. The average skill of the other team is almost always higher than the skill of my teammates. While I do enjoy competitive games here and there, I do not like that even in casual playlists I have to try way too hard just to hold a 50% W/L
Exactly, I feel like it’s alway a party of a couple good players vs me and some potatoes. It’s not fun to play at all. If they could fix the skill balancing it would help a lot.
I'm glad they brought up the titles, emblems, and prestige icons stuff. I vividly remember getting stomped in pubs but staying in games just to grind all of that stuff, it didn't matter to me if I got noob tubed 25 times in a game or anything. I just wanted to get the cool looking stuff to show off to everyone, so I played pubs no matter what until I got it. It's such a simple way of keeping people on your game and playing but instead they've moved towards this model of seasons where they add new stuff every few months to try and retain the players, and it makes no sense because the game progressively gets worse each time they do so.
Not to mention the elim system stat padding making people think they popped off 20-8 when realistically they went 3-8-17 (k/d/a) just so they don't cry and make 80 posts a week on the reddit page for how shit they are
I remember the first time I ever played CoD back on World at War, my ass was getting laid out. First FPS I ever played, it took me months before I actually felt like I could shoot straight, but it made it feel so much better when I actually got good and was frying on MW2. To be fair, I was like 12 and I played that shit 3 hours a day, probably more in the summer with no school. They're trying too hard now to cater to the casual/new player base instead of making the old fans happy, so noobs get a game they can learn quickly while the long-time players get a watered-down version of what we used to have.
its because they have a business model, and its flawed completely. if u want to be successful in business, you become a master of your product. they arent a master of their product. unfortunately, they are at a huge crossroads where, how in the fuck are they going to find a pro who will give them legit advice? you cant. and therefore, we continue to get a 60 year old mans ideas on what video games should be.

@@wyattadams1978 nah its actually kinda crazy, one of my first vanguard beta games was against the entire LA thieves roster plus JKap. Getting one kill on them was satisfying lol but needless to say they fucking whooped me and a team full of randos.
I played scump and gunless in bo4 lost both but was playing on max sens and was still able to compete. I changed to a lower sense in mw 2019 and somehow beat the Dallas Empire champs roster with Mutex instead of huke in a pub during the cold war alpha. Every chance you get to play with a pro is an honor and nothing can boost your skill higher then playing against them.
The way I remember the COD match making is that there were maybe 2-3 decent players in a 6v6 on each either team and it would normally be the same people at the top of the leaderboards if the lobbies stayed banded with the same players after each match. So it seems like it went from a mixture of skill levels on teams to just 6v6 teams of all similar level skilled players. So instead of playing maybe 1-2 decent players on the other team you now have to deal with the whole team being cracked out of their minds.
I loved how mw3 showed your progression on the previous games because it adds to that wow factor when you see someone in the lobby with 10th prestige on all the games
I love this podcast so fucking much. I feel like all I ever comment is about how much I adore all the optic guys, and how I wish the episodes were longer lmaooo
When hitch explained old sbmm, it wasn’t the same as today. Back then it went by your level/prestige , not “skill”. Now, you can be a level 10 and go against a max prestige just because y’all are the same skill level. And that’s bad because if y’all are the same skill, the one with the better connection will win majority of the time.
Hitch Explained SBMM perfectly, its not that I don't enjoy competition, and if I want that I will play ranked, but after I play my first 2-3 games online I can no longer play pubs relaxed because I'm playing all players my own skill level or better going hard using meta weapons. And also to H3cz point, SBMM ruins parties as well, I cant play with any of my friends that play COD more casually than me because they get body slammed.
Sbmm needs to be toned down for sure. But fun for me isn’t just shitting on the lobby. I have fun when there’s competition no matter what. Everyone’s different. Some ppl don’t like to sweat every game bc it’s not fun and I can understand that.
@@BeaniesXO I like sweating but I want an actual rank for that, i dont necessarily like shitting on people every game but i cant even snipe or level guns peacefully without getting kids going hard on me thats where i dont like sbmm lobbies like imagine faze making mw2 trickshot montages with only sweats like probably wouldn't happen
As a casual player who is a bit above average The worst thing about sbmm to me is that it makes playing with my friends who aren’t s good a terrible time. The lobbies we get in together are always sweaty af and the less skilled of our friends group just hav a terrible experience and always end up just getting off frustrated. Yes they would hav a better time playing solo in their own matchmake lobbies but no one really wants to do that
Finally someone gets it !!!! If I want to play with my girlfriend who is a newer gamer I can’t just because I am good and have played cod for 15 years .
SBMM was worked out back in halo 3… Rank modes with strong SBMM, social with weak SBMM… if you play someone in social and they completely body you, everyone is checking their service card, this show you their highest rank. If you’re a casual rank 30 player in social and get destroyed 1 in 10 games by a 50 rank you accept the fact they are better and move on, let it motivate you to play ranked and improve or move on and play another 9 games with the majority of the player base who are casual and around your skill level. Get dominated in social gave players an opportunity to see how you at rank 30 stack up against other ranks
Hitch made a mistake when he was talking about SBMM in the older games… while there may have been some SBMM at play, the tech probably wasn’t there to make it as strict. The second MAJOR factor was the fact that lobbies did not disband after every game and prioritized ping. In this case, if you got in a lobby full of couch gamers, if they were willing to stick around for the punishment, then they were there for you to shoot at again next game, although some of them may be shuffled on to ur team when new people enter the lobby and the teams are created for next game. IMO, they got the closest to solving this problem for people who don’t have time to sweat when they talked about pubs vs. ranked play… Ranked should be where the lobby disbands and the strictest possible SBMM is at play and you have to sweat and work together to get a win and rank up. Pubs should go back to the style where people remember being able to chirp the people in their lobby from game to game, as well as getting gifted memorable streaks of wins and dominating the competition if the ping prioritized matchmaking allows for it. I think this could majorly change the way pubs in COD feels. Obviously there are other glaring issues like progression and other stuff, but I think just that change to the way matchmaking happens could be a big plus for the COD series.
New people should not be all the way punished just because they want to play with their friends who can show them the ropes (spawns, weapons, rotations, etc.) … that is where ranked can come into play; my friends don’t deserve to suffer because they have other responsibilities and I just game on the weekends 😂
Never thought I would hear a mention of The Race with Jericho, GoldGlove, Tmartn, etc since the last time they did it in 2017 on WWII. Oh the nostalgia 🥲
THE FACT THAT THE CEO OF OPTIC GAMING ORG. STILL PLAYS AND IS ACTIVE IN THE SCENE. VLOG, ALL ABOUT THE PLAYERS!! WHAT AN EXAMPLE OF A FUCKING LEADER!! 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
So refreshing to hear Dashy talking about AA being OP as hell. Got so much love for my controller brothers and its not only about input balance. CoD on controller feels like driving a Tesla on Autopilot nowadays.
In MW2, most people hacked for it, but the spinning golden cross was earned by getting 1000 kills inside an AC-130 Kill Streak. I got that and 10th prestige legit because I spent MONTHS grinding that game and I felt like the baddest person in EVERY match with that as my emblem.
My experience with SBMM as a top 4% is that it doesn't evenly match teams. It just tries to keep you at a 1.0 k/d and a 50/50 win loss. So I get placed in a few rounds where I go 3-4 k/d and then it puts me against a team of 1.5-2 k/d players with only negative k/d players on my team, and forces the loss and lower k/d onto me to try and keep me 1 k/d and 50/50 win loss. It's annoying because you can see it happening.
Yup . My buddy and I were playing the Beta , we both had a good game where we went 35-12 and 38-15 . “ I said wow we actually had fun , how much do you want to be this next game is gonna be sweaty “ i went positive 4 and he went even . Its awful
I think they can fix SBMM by giving us rewards for winning. Unlock stuff for certain amount of wins. I wouldn’t mind SBMM if i was rewarded. I don’t want to play with brand new players either. that’s super boring
Like Hutch said , how often in MW2 / MW3 / Black Ops 2 did you match with level 1 players when you were 7th prestige? Once out of every 50 matches ? Just make ranked and let pubs be PUBS .
interesting to see how much they loved mw2. I only played gamebattles when it was around. never really cared about anything pub related. Crazy how much dashy cares about some titles and emblems, really makes the nostalgia come back for everyone.
Fully agree with Hitch, ranked play is for competition and sweating, public is for having fun and stomping, you get good lobbies, you get bad lobbies, it happens! One of the most fun things in the past was when kids would get the new cod for Christmas and you would stomp them for 2 weeks straight xD
A big problem people don't realize about SBMM is that it's searching to find me lobbies around my skill level. So if there aren't enough good enough players around me it's pulling from servers all over to put us all together. Meaning ping will always be an issue. I can't just get placed into random whatever lobbies in my area because there might not be enough people playing at the same time.
would be dope if the extended videos for each of these had the links in the description. would love to be able to watch the video then go directly to the extended part seamlessly.
The thing about skill based match making that really makes it horrible is, if I’m playing with an 74u or krig cause I like using the balanced guns and I have a 1.4 kd I’m gonna get matched with kids camping with riot shields and shotguns because they also have a 1.4 that’s not SKILL based it’s stats based
I Agree with Hitch 100% in MW2 and 3 I would listen to Opera music while playing with no game sound and just used to run and gun after a few long days of work and school. Goodtimes
Probably my biggest gripe with SBMM is the fact that if I have 1 good game, the next 6 games I'm getting absolutely dominated by the other team and I seem to always have 1 or 2 teammates that get a 2-18 KD. It shouldn't be like that. Plus, there's nothing to show for when I do win. All I get is XP. Why don't we have ranks to show or emblems or calling cards to show what rank we are?
It’s honestly an extremely easy fix to SBMM. Make public matches with a prestige system that has no SBMM. Make a ranked playlist with a proper ranking system to grind with SBMM. Both can co-exist, why does it have to be one or the other
What if they were to do a dead silence setup like in Advanced Warfare. The "Perk" itself is still considered utility, but the user has the ability to pause it whenever during the round (And always has access to it). Not saying this is the best option, but they could at least consider this an alternative to the current setup.
Bro prestige emblems is what COD was all about. You would have that one friend that was like 3 prestiges ahead of everyone always beasting out. Gave you something to grind pubs for. Getting the gold cross in COD 4. Lobby leaderboards when you could see everyones stats and rank in the lobby. I wish I could smack activision in the face with this video. A good touch on everything that's really wrong with new COD. What happened to the simplicity of COD? The arcady feel with the vibrant simple maps were a vibe. Fun streaks, what happened to those? Sad to have hope year after year and they stray further and further away from the core of what made COD great.
I really hope Hector can pull B1944. Myself and my friend group were absolutely obsessed with this game and it played so damn well. Every aspect of the game felt phenomenal and I always check on it to see if it has any activity because I truly do miss it. Idk how many people got to experience the game but it was genuinely so much fun and I feel it had a really good opportunity for some competitive spotlight. It was a simple shooter that was a very good mix of CS and CoD with really solid maps. Do it for the people Hector. :)
Hutch is 100% correct. I've worked for major tech companies (amazon, facebook, etc) and it's all data driven. I don't he's defending it, he probably just doesn't care because he understands, at the end of the day, activision and IW are making decisions to make the company money. SBMM is part of that to increase player retention of the majority of the players.
People now quit COD because of the implementation of SBMM in pubs. Essentially the system has incentivized people to quit if they're bad. Back in the day with COD4 - MW2. I remember players being bad but wanting to get better. I remember when I was bad in COD4, me getting rinsed made me want to get better. Also, I vividly remember that I used to get into lobbies with non-prestige players back in the day a lot as a prestige player. But for COD Activision has essentially created this issue by implementing SBMM in COD and catering to lesser skilled players. When it comes to pubs ping should be king. Connectivity should always be prioritized, if you're getting rinsed you can always just leave the game. But the way to get better in anything is to get humbled by people better than you. This is especially true in COD, I can only imagine the almost infinite amount of people that learned something new from a killcam of another player being cracked, whether it be a crazy nadespot, pre-fire spot, or rush route. SBMM should only and only ever be in ranked play in any MP game, that's quite literally the point of ranked play. That's also the attraction of Ranked play as well. Now that's gone, what's the point of playing ranked when you essentially do that in pubs?
What game we’re talking about and watched Hecs montage. I don’t understand why SBMM is in the game. They should just let the sweats play Ranked League play and the regular gamers play pubs. Call of Duty or ruining COD more and more EVERY YEAR.
Honestly if COD implemented something like 24:16 to 24:50 and put alot Effort toward it, i think it would almost be Guarnteed to be Well Recieved by Alot of People no Doubt. Like a Unique Pub mmr ish type of skill rank, and then obviously a Ranked play skill/division rank, when they add ranked. That would be a Big change People could actually Really get on Board with. Really cool idea. (on a small note Hoping mwii has a good Combat Record type tab in the menu), and thaaaaank god for a Friring Range, absolutley Love that.
That happened in the mw2 beta, my buddies and I matched with teep, cloak, merk, tim and sym and we were going crazy ready to try hard. But my buddy dced and one of those guys dced, so teep and everyone backed out, so sad cause it will never happen again.
I wonder if it’s possible to have a setting to turn on or off SBMM. Similar to the way you can turn off or on cross-platform. That would solve every problem. Players who want to play against people their skill level can. Players who don’t, dont. Low skilled players can have it on to play other low skilled players. Higher skilled players can then choose off or on based on the experience they want that day.
The problem with SBMM is that eventually every game is full of sweats. Whereas without it yes you might get stomped one game but the next you might be the one stomping. Also, the entire team isn’t full of sweats. It might just be a couple of them.
Dynamic response curve isn’t a cheat code it makes aiming easier because it gives you a slower sense with small analog movements and a standard sense towards the outer portion of the ability thus a dynamic sensitivity it’s comparable to mnk because yes you have a standard dpi but if you whip your wrist it’s faster than a drag. Also we got dynamic around the same time as deadzones which I’d argue are more effective than response curves. Everyone shoots straight is a bad cop out because we were all playing CoD on slower systems on lower fps with higher/slower response times most people played on a big flat screen. Another thing to include is the more you do something the better you get to a point so even casual CoD players these days shoot strainer than casuals 5 years ago.

Cod just doesn’t feel like cod anymore. Every game is another step backwards since mw2019. It’s just sad honestly
11:11 Hecz digs Deadwood! Thats dope!
Bought damn time Big Brucy is back on the pod.
THE FACT THAT THE CEO OF OPTIC GAMING ORG. STILL PLAYS AND IS ACTIVE IN THE SCENE. VLOG, ALL ABOUT THE PLAYERS!! WHAT AN EXAMPLE OF A FUCKING LEADER!!
🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
mannnnnnnnnn I was excited to hear boze tell his story... let the man talk!!
Fax I was looking for this comment
Such a good podcast, love when you guys are passionate about how good cod used to be
Fact that hutch said listen to music is so dope zero game sound straight beats through the headset
Its awful
Dashy with the tippable appearance you love to see it
I'm convinced if MW2 Remastered came back with MP it would end the current titles.
I still wanna hear Boze story that he said he’s never told or thought he hasn’t lol
I knew Boze was bout it 💪🏽 they changed the name from esports boxing club to Undisputed but it’s gonna be next level!
This isn't mentioned enough in this debate. Sometimes I go from 25 to 60 or higher after a couple games where I just happen to pop off a little.
Blunt Force Challenge unlocked the first Weed related thing in BO1. still remember it to this day
love the dynamic of bruce and hitch on the podcast, more dashy on these please!
They went on a rant about Mw2. This is now my favorite episode 😊
When they brought up the race to prestige it reminded me of doom clan
The footstep audio sounds like every just has sit rep pro from mw3. Its crazy
"I like that there's a chance you can win and there's a chance you can lose" Boze is full of wisdom. 😂
"Enemies with benefits "
🤣
I used to use that one on MW2 vanilla ..
i dont mind sbmm but not in casual, the only time you should be matched based on skill is in ranked. Casual should just be connection based and random
I remember everytime a new COD came out there would be the race to master prestige 🙌🙌💯
Dam just watched the podcast and they mention it 🙌😂 29:00
I love every time they bring up battalion 1944, that game was the most fun ive had playing a tactical shooter and i have 5k hours in cs
Also, ive stopped buy CODs since the gunsmith came out, i dont got the time to unlock 70 attachments for all the weapons. I got a job and a life lol
These guys were spittin facts this episode. COD used to be so much more simple. Bo4 was the last traditional Cod
Hitch is the most brutal member of optic, no shits given, spinning that phone facing the ground got me goose bumps
STOP CUTTING OFF MY BOY MBOZE! the papanya making y’all ruudde. Much love tho ❤
i remember in ghost i got in a lobby with dashy, crazy how life works
Let's pray this doesn't happen in Orlando! Well it did.. and the videos are crazy.
Ahhh to be young and playing Bops2 LP. The memories.
would be dope if the extended videos for each of these had the links in the description. would love to be able to watch the video then go directly to the extended part seamlessly.
Battalion 1944 is now called Battalion Legacy and it is F2P on steam. Would recommend if you enjoyed older COD titles.
I remember title and emblem hunting in Mw2 and Mw3 💙
The thing about skill based match making that really makes it horrible is, if I’m playing with an 74u or krig cause I like using the balanced guns and I have a 1.4 kd I’m gonna get matched with kids camping with riot shields and shotguns because they also have a 1.4 that’s not SKILL based it’s stats based
Glad big Bruce is back in content
The no double y y is a perk to were your pistol gets brung up , there’s still yy in the game
The weapon tree branch is badass.
That COD4 Gold Cross emblem is the GOAT
Cold War was actually the last cod to have prestiges so that’s why treyarch and Vonderhaar have my trust
It’s honestly an extremely easy fix to SBMM.
Make public matches with a prestige system that has no SBMM.
Make a ranked playlist with a proper ranking system to grind with SBMM. Both can co-exist, why does it have to be one or the other
Prestiging also made you use guns you never used before. Where now once you find the best gun you don't even bother with the other guns.
What if they were to do a dead silence setup like in Advanced Warfare. The "Perk" itself is still considered utility, but the user has the ability to pause it whenever during the round (And always has access to it). Not saying this is the best option, but they could at least consider this an alternative to the current setup.
Crazy to think that was FormaL's first win for OpTic since champs 2017. He did win with Huntsmen though
I deadass remember playing ranked against coL teepee. And parasite in bo2 league play
Dude I’ve been nodding my head in agreement with all these points in this podcast. My neck hurts haha 😂
Bro I remember when your prestige meant something. I was so excited whenever I would get 10th prestige. Now it feels like it doesn’t matter.
Hecz gotta let hitch run this podcast and take a step back
100%
Hitch already basically runs the Flycast. I like having HECZ running this pod his own way.
Love Hecz and what he brings, I like how it is now where Hecz runs it but sometimes he'll be out and Hitch will fill in.
@@booster4323 agreed
@@patmody Hecs got his own as well lmao
One of the best podcasts ever, love it.
That NBA analogry on SBMM was legit
Hutch is 100% correct. I've worked for major tech companies (amazon, facebook, etc) and it's all data driven. I don't he's defending it, he probably just doesn't care because he understands, at the end of the day, activision and IW are making decisions to make the company money. SBMM is part of that to increase player retention of the majority of the players.
the rant about the old titles, emblems, and prestiges we got was spot on the game is dry now.
Ranked playlist (ranked and rating), Casual playlist (no SBMM or hidden rating), how it should be done imo.
Skill based matchmaking doesn’t really matter if you had a legit ranking system
Honestly if COD implemented something like 24:16 to 24:50 and put alot Effort toward it, i think it would almost be Guarnteed to be Well Recieved by Alot of People no Doubt. Like a Unique Pub mmr ish type of skill rank, and then obviously a Ranked play skill/division rank, when they add ranked. That would be a Big change People could actually Really get on Board with. Really cool idea. (on a small note Hoping mwii has a good Combat Record type tab in the menu), and thaaaaank god for a Friring Range, absolutley Love that.
Bro, I love HItch's pure love for cod.
Man I can’t believe we almost lost Bruce. love that guy
Hitch’s sentiment at 7:30 is spot on
The problem with SBMM is that eventually every game is full of sweats.
Such a great insight. Hope the right people hear it.
Hecz, hope you are able to take battalion 1944 under your wings. So much potential there and could be an epic game. Please don’t give up on it! 🙏🏾
I ran into scump back in BO2 it literally was like "what and honor! But chill dude we know you're that good" dude's a sweatband lmao 🤣
