“Cried Ourselves A Hurricane” is a piece composed by Kevin Curtis in 2021 in memoriam for Josh Chornick.
“Josh had been heavily involved in musical activities at REC, in the Vocal and Band programs. He was very much interested in New Music, heading up the student run Contemporary Music Ensemble. I used some voice samples taken of Josh delivering introductory remarks at a New Music performance from a couple of years ago, and I used Josh’s singing voice from the video in the homestead, and the sound of his footsteps crossing the floorboards. The video led me to the song by Sleeping At Last: Earth, and I took some piano samples from the original recording as well. Josh’s brother Nathan can be heard on the recording playing some of the passages on trumpet. The voices on the wind are supplied by the students of the REC vocal program.” - Kevin Curtis
    Text:
    Meditating on the noise
    Meditating…
    Move deeper into the noise…
    There was an earthquake
There was an avalanche of change
    We were so afraid
    We cried ourselves a hurricane
Video shot at the McBeth Park, on the Brooks Trail, in Winnipeg. Intro and outro videos captured in Lockport, Manitoba.

Wow. You have no idea how grateful we are for this video. What you may not know is that Josh was out recording these types of videos in nature…he wanted to use them in music. For you to so accurately and truly reflect Joshua’s spirit, and that of Kevin’s during his amazing and immersive process, and Jeff’s unparalleled gift with the people playing, well, it brings you into our family. There are so many people playing and singing in this piece that knew, know, Joshua. I am forever in awe for the courage it took everyone to participate in this piece that will live for generations. Thank you from all my heart and soul. Deborah (mama) and Joshua (Forever 18) and the rest of the Chornick family.
