    I remember the World Athletics Championships in Rome
    I was an official assistant to the national teams
    all the athletes lived the relaxing and fun atmosphere of life in the athletes' village, where we ate, chatted, joked, laughed and played together, all the athletes from all over the world and the guys from the organization
    all but one
    carl lewis arrived in rome as a star, he did not grant interviews, he lived apart, he never has been seen in the athletes' village until the moment of the accreditation to enter the olympic stadium.
    one evening we set up a room in the big ergife hotel with huge screens to attend the live concert of Madonna together, it was beautiful, fun, an unforgettable evening. they were all there.
    all but one.
    carl lewis played the role of the predestined triumphant as soon as he hit Italian soil.
    that didn't make him very popular, but he didn't care. he felt like a star and wanted everyone to recognize that role.
    when ben johnson won the final (and, mind you, i argue and will always argue that ALL athletes used banned substances extensively), a party was organized at the athletes' village in his honor which all athletes attended.
    also all US athletes.
    all but one.

      Great story. Lewis was my hero and athlete in the 1984 Olympics, but after the Olympics in L.A., I learned about Johnson and started noticing how Lewis tried to give the impression of grandiose while Ben was down to earth, soft spoken and focused on his job. I completely started disliking Lewis and had a new favorite athlete. His name was Ben Johnson. To me he won the 1988 Olympics fair and square

    God ud almost think that Ben's arms n legs wud come flying off his body cause they were moving so quickly from Gun to Tape. I'd say if Christie was in the middle lanes he wuda got the bronze over R. Stewart of Jamaica? I'll always remember this race cause of the time and the great athletes that it contained, that it encouraged me to take up sprinting myself and it took me from 12 hrs old to 1997 to become Irish National championship but at 200m tho, but I did win the national U23s National title at 100m as well. I love sprinting so much, it's the easiest event to do, but the hardest to be the best at. Ireland 🇮🇪 was the country I won those events BTW For any fan interested?? I wish I cud of made a world or Olympic appearance but I was a little shy of the qualifying time to get there. Ah well I enjoyed my time as an competitive sprinter n that's the important thing I guess. But to those who think their quick? Please get down to ur local Athletics club and see how u do wit the coach n other athletes/Sprinters. Nothing to lose. But all to gain,

    Somehow Johnson leaps forward out of the blocks like no other person is capable of. On the very first stride he's already a half step in the lead. After several strides he has already established the final margin over Carl, meaning the last 80 or so meters is about even. Watch his start in slow motion. He catapults from the blocks, the strength of his left leg must be above and beyond, because just one thrust from the blocks and he's clearly in the lead, which seems ridiculous.

    This was a great race. I remember watching it when I was 9 years old. Ben Johnson captured the public imagination wth that race. Carl Lewis got his ass whooped.
    I prefer this race than the 9.79 race the following year where he got busted for steroid taking.

      9.83 is still a highly respectable time. Today the top sprinters apart from Usain Bolt can run 9.7. If you consider the newer, faster track surfaces that they now use in comparison to the mondo tracks 27 years ago. The sprinters of 2015 are running about 0.1 secs faster than Carl Lewis and Ben Johnson fastest times.

    • @alanp.thompson
      @alanp.thompson  9 років тому +1

      Yeah very true I think the carl lewis vs ben Johnson was a great rivalry it drew more people to the sport. Bolt is great but at his best no one can touch him making it a little boring

    • @andredehaney7931
      @andredehaney7931 9 років тому +2

      it is boring. I like Usain Bolt, he has been great for the mens sprints. However I would like him to leave track and field now as I would like to see the regular height sprinters competing in the 100/200 metres.
      At 1.96 m tall with such good leg speed and a muscular physique. His height and length of stride is a distinct advantage in comparison to the shorter sprinters.
      Carl Lewis was 1.90 m tall, Linford Christie was 1.89 m tall. These are 6' 2'' sprinters.
      Bolt is nearly 3 ins taller than them.
      I would prefer to see Yohan Blake take on, Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin.
      Bolt has raised the bar and its time for him go into the NBA. He looks more like a Basketball player.
      I am 5ft 8 inches so I know the disadvantages of being a short guy.

    Canadians were so naive, except Dick Pound. He made a very prosperous career out of sacrificing Ben at the Seoul Olympics. Many years later Charlie found out the Stanazolol in Ben’s B Sample was pure. Impossible, unless put there in the lab. Ben told the truth in the Dubin inquiry following the Seoul Olympics, because it was a serious legal proceeding. He admitted to taking steroids and for how long, but he never admitted to using Stanazolol in 1988. Since security in the drug testing area had broken down so badly in Seoul, the IOC could not prove that Ben took Stanazolol before the race, so they reverted to taking his medal away for another reason, Ben’s hormone profile. He was the only athlete the IOC penalized, even though most of the power and speed athletes had the same endocrine profile as Ben, including many big name medalists. Charlie knew all this information soon after the Olympics, except the information about Ben’s B sample which came years later. But the damage was done,and the public was never given the real story. Even today, most people still think Ben lost his medal for a positive Stanazolol test. Ben was a sacrificial lamb led to the IOC slaughter, ensuring that Carl and America would get their coveted gold medal, even though Carl had failed a US administered doping test prior to the Seoul Olympics. The head of the US drug testing program had written a letter to the US Olympic committee to have Carl taken off the team, but he was overridden. He subsequently left the drug testing program, feeling that it’s true purpose was to teach the athletes and coaches how to beat the testing system, not how to win clean.

      What an Orwell - great imagination, George!
      Carl was cleared according to the rules - he took a Chinese medicine against cold that contained small doses of ephedrine; and Carl actually suffered a lot from cold in 1988 - I can testify to that because I did a long radio interview with him that year, as far back as February 1988!
