It has taken me a lifetime to hear this brilliant work. Now I know the history is it too late to be angry that SVR suffered so much at the hands of a drunken conductor and an unsympathetic critic? SVR was 40 years younger than I am now when he composed it and I WOULD NOT HAVE A CLUE WHERE TO BEGIN writing anything as moving. May he rest in peace and rise in glory? Peace be upon him and all who appreciate him
Yaps You are right! It is just a shame that it is not heard as often as it might be. I like to listen to it each night and think about all the young people who have been knocked down by critics never to stand up again. I am just so happy that SVR managed to overcome the criticism and go from strength to strength and I only hope many young people will learn from his example.
Are you referring to César Cui as the "unsympathetic critic"? I would agree, & I would even go so far as to suggest that much of Cui's review had been written in advance of hearing a single note of the symphony. In other words, I think Cui was biased against Rakhmaninov & condemned the symphony in advance. The reason is that Cui represented the new "Nationalism" in Russian Music. Not only was he a member of the Mighty FIve (Borodin, Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, Cui), he established the group & gave it its name, & hailed it as the way of Russia's own music, ready to throw off the shackles & restraints of the heavily German-based Conservatory tradition. So of course, as a critic, he would have been especially harsh on composers who stayed true to Conservatory traditions & German-based forms -- composers such as Anton Rubinstein, Pyotr Chaikovski (or "Tchaikovsky" if you follow the French tradition of transliteration of the Cyrillic alphabet), & of course, Rakhmaninov. So as I said, since Rakhmaninov stayed true to the Conservatory tradition, & Cui was fiercely defensive of the new Nationalism movement, I would suggest that Cui hated Rakhmaninov's symphony before he even heard it.
@@ZeldaMarshall Interesting. Furthermore, of the composers you mention, I would venture to say that CC is the least well known, if indeed known at all, by the general public. Thank tou for your comnent.
@@georgealderson4424 Indeed, this is the victory that history gave Rakhmaninov over Cui: Rakhmaninov's compositions are remembered, whereas Cui's are not (not in the West, anyway). Rakhmaninov himself might have been more inclined to reconciliation, judging by his relation with Glazounov, the composer who also conducted the première of this symphony # 1 while (allegedly) drunk. And then years later, when Rakhmaninov offered Glazounov a copy of his 4th piano concerto for feedback, Glazounov deliberately abandoned the score in a taxicab that he rode. But one of Glazounov's last compositions was a concerto for saxophone & orchestra, & Rakhmaninov included a significant passage for saxophone in his own last composition, the Op. 45 Symphonic Dances, supposedly in a posthumous gesture of reconciliation to Glazounov (who had died in 1936 -- Rakhmaninov's Op.45 dates from 1940).

Awe-inspiring music, wonderful performance. There is nothing in the whole symphonic repertoire that combines power and pathos, tenderness and tragedy in such an organic way. The final movement - OMG! A headlong rush towards a catastrophe, followed by the emergence of some overwhelming power. The transition to the major key at the conclusion gives us some reason for optimism in a dark world. One might be excused for thinking that Rach had a premonition about the cataclysm of war and revolution that was soon to engulf the world, and his own country, in particular.
Superb camera work. I've never seen an orchestra concert with such outstanding camera work! The clarinets showing just the hands. Then an extraordinary non-jerked pan. And then an occasional wide shot.
Robert Simpson, the great 20th century English composer stated in a book he edited titled "The Symphony": "If a symphony of Rachmaninoff is to be remembered, then it should be No.1" Though No. 2 is more mature and is the more popular, one cannot dismiss the overwhelming power of number 1.
Why do UA-cam have to interrupt with adverts in the middle of a movement - ads for male incontinence control don't really add to the mood of this great work.
Sir, I must kindly recommend a software called "Adblock". It is a free program and will block nearly all advertisements, including those abominations which interrupt music. I have used it for many years and could not imagine doing without it. Good day.
Still the best reading and recording of this fiery Rach 1 on the internet or lp, tape, or cd mediums. I would love to hear Platonov & the Perm musicians perform this symphony with Ormandy's glockenspiel addition in the first movement -- ah . . .to hear real Russian artists glorify the Russian Orthodox quotation so regally. There is more to this Gypsy flavored, heraldic symphony than Rach scholars are telling us!
very impressed by Mr. Platonov, he makes these beautiful young people work:-)! The result is exciting and yes: a very underrated symphony. I enjoy this performance immensely
This has always been an underappreciated work. It is moving and beautiful. This is a lovely rendition. I suspect it will become the standard that other orchestras try to meet.
I must have heard 80% of the available recordings and most of the live concerts recorded here on UA-cam. This gets my vote for the best. Everyone else seems to miss one vital element or another, whether the details are slurred over in the excitement at a tempo which is just a little too fast (Ashkenazy and Svetlanov, his first one on Melodyia/Angel) or by someone who adores the details, brings them out successfully, but loses the excitement of the whole (Litton and others.) Ormandy, Previn, and others seem content to stand outside of the music and present a generalized, somewhat passionless, charcoal sketch of this sprawling, colorful epic. Dutoit and Maazel come maddeningly close to capturing the work but contain serious blemishes - especially in the finale. Jansons, Kogan, and Petrenko are all good but linger behind the best of the best. (Usually, it's just one or two aspects of the score that just don't work - as if the conductor can't quite get this head around the whole score. They and even Pawel Przytocki with an average but well-drilled Polish Orchestra will do if you aren't a perfectionist.) But THIS is the one. This is the keeper. Somebody needs to ship these fine young players and their conductor to a better hall and record them in this work for posterity.
@@alexknezevic8327 I have - and it's a maddening one. I love everything about it until the finale -- and then several measures of music are shaved from the beginning of the fourth movement. I don't know if the tape was damaged, there was a mistake in uploading to UA-cam or if Rozhdestvensky is using a different edition of the score. I'll re-listen to the link you provided. Perhaps it is a different upload. (In any event, you've got to love the well-drilled perfection of the orchestra!) (BTW, UA-cam never notified me of your reply. Hence the long silence. My apologies.)
It's taken far too long but at last the genius of Rachmaninov is being recognized and he can rightly take his place among the greatest of composers. For an early work this symphony is amazing, full of energy and drama and very individual. "Isle of the Dead" and the "Symphonic Dances" both remain for me two of the finest musical compositions of all time.
I don't know offhand what MUSICAL WORLD that you are living on but much of Rachmaninoff's music has been widely recognized and PRAISED for many years now! His 1st symph. was much better in quality than many other composers' 1st symphonies.
@@steveburrus9347 Yes, the popular works like the 2nd piano concerto and to a slightly lesser extent the 2nd symphony but much of his work was neglected for many years including of course the lst symphony. It wasn't so long ago that Rachmaninov was considered a great pianist but not exactly in the first rank of composers.
I don't pretend to know anything of the technicalities of this piece, I am just content to savour this recording and feel no need to yearn for anything better. The best things in life are free... Thank you Perm and Rachmaninoff.
Thank you, Valeriy, for posting such a good, live performance of the 1st symphony. Sound quality was admirable for a live theatre concert. This increasingly rehabilitated piece cries out for empathy and accuracy and got just that, and to think that Rachmaninov composed this wonderful (if ill-fated) work when only 23, around the same age as many of these players.
I wonder how much inspiration Shostakovich took from this powerful tour de force? I have heard this symphony from a number of recordings, but none of them hove the sheer impact of this performance!
Great symphony and inspired performance - moments of haunting beauty, energy and exuberance. Tchaikovsky admired Rachmaninov's early work but died suddenly and so was unable to fulfill his promise to conduct his compositions.
We are grateful for that. Rach's depression led him to write his piano concerto number 2 which is the most prominent work now according to classicfm hall of fame.
Wow what a treasure I just came with. This is a magnificient performance of a somehow underrated yet absolutely wonderful masterpiece. Superb, very intensely expressive. Bravo.
Danke !
I just watched this performance again. It really is top-notch! Fine orchestra responding to a fine conductor. Great audio-visuals. Thanks, again, for posting. Hope all involved are doing well today.
This is the best recorded performance of this symphony I know. Sad that I've not been able to find any commercial CDs of conductor and orchestra. Thank you for this!
Thanks be to Rachmaninov! Thanks be to all the great artists for this! Thanks to you Валерий Платонов ! ....But No Thanks to you pundits! You are the barnacles on the ship of life!
Dear Lord Almighty, what an ULTRA FINE PERFORMANCE of an ULTRA FINE SYMPHONY by an ULTRA ULTRA FINE COMPOSER!!! WOW! What a bunch of outstanding young(er!) musicians whose hearts were really really "into" the music!!! That fine oboe player looked like he could have been an "Olympic weight lifter", & yet he beautifully played such a "delicate" instrument!! Russians playing Rachmaninov- what could be finer!!! "Ach du lieber, mein schatz"!!!!!
What an outstanding live performance!! It proves that a conductor and orchestra with heart and soul can breathe life into a great, but often-neglected work of such a romantic genius as Rachmaninov....Unfortunately, I've just experienced a live performance that was so "virtuosic, athletic and rushed" that it missed the mark completely...Thanks for uploading this truly memorable performance!!!
Absolutely brilliant rendition of my favourite (along with Mahler's Sixth) symphony. All human life is in this piece and, to my mind, this is an excellent interpretation by an orchestra that looks as though it is actually feeling the music as well as playing it.
I really love the 2nd movement. It sounds as sultry as some of Rachmaninov's _much_ later works, such as the 4th Piano Concerto, the 3rd Symphony and the Symphonic Dances.
Back again - I have still not heard a better performance of this under-rated symphony. Glazunov was reportedly drunk when he conducted the first performance. Perhaps Rachmaninov forgave him as there are some lovely phrases from the saxophone in Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances - perhaps a fond gesture towards Glazunov's very good saxophone concerto
Let's not forget that at this point Glazunov was going through his own crisis, from which he never recovered (and which contributed to his alcoholism). The real villains, in my book, are the orchestra, who didn't rehearse this complex piece and were quite content to let it all go to ruin.
I watched a video of Nikolai Lugansky soloing in the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #1 and then decided to make an evening of it by viewing Rachmaninoff's Symphony #1. I keep returning to this performance. Thanks for posting and all the best to the ensemble of that time!
Oh I feel like such an idiot now. I just read up on the orchestra... of course they are exceptional, I have heard of them before. That explains why are the exceptionally good.
This has always been my favourite Rachmaninov symphony, really moving. Never understood why it was so badly received and has languished as a poor relation. A reappraisal is long overdue.
@@Peechiness Rubbish! It's just very different. Not as "great" as no. 2, agreed, but far from horrible! I have yet to hear a film score written by an 18 year old as good as this! Wish I could!
What a truly exciting build up to the cataclysmic coda in movt. 3 - and one of the few performances where the tam tam is given a proper whack just before it! I love the look of excitement on the face of the young cymbals player! This is almost on a par with Ormandy's classic 60s recording (still the best!).
But that's just the point. The tam-tam should not be given a proper whack. It's marked mezzoforte in the score. Anyone who plays it differently plays it just for show. But after hearing the performance I think they did it out of necessity. The Tam-Tam they have is just too small to played for an effective mezzoforte at that moment.
I agree that the 60's recording with Ormandy is standard for this piece. My life was genuinely shaped by three recordings as an 18 year old. The Ormandy recording of this symphony, his recording with Philippe Entremont of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" and the George Szell/Cleveland Orchestra recording of Brahms "Variations on a Theme by Haydn Op. 56A" All majestic, but this piece left the greatest impression and inspiration.
Very interesting to hear this with the smaller string section. I'm hearing more detail in the winds which adds an extra dimension. At times it needs more strings though. Brilliant tempi and structural design in this interpretation.

I had'nt appreciated the real meaning of this work until today, and your description fits what I feel about it.

Superb camera work. I've never seen an orchestra concert with such outstanding camera work! The clarinets showing just the hands. Then an extraordinary non-jerked pan. And then an occasional wide shot.
I noticed that as well. He must have been very familiar with the score to be able to focus in on the musicians that would be coming in.
Just recently came to know and relish this remarkable symphony of the highest caliber. Bravo 👏 👏 thanks for posting!🎉❤
For me, the best of Rachmaninov's symphonies in a very exciting performance.
One year on: still not a better live performance than this. Terrific in every way
Robert Simpson, the great 20th century English composer stated in a book he edited titled "The Symphony": "If a symphony of Rachmaninoff is to be remembered, then it should be No.1" Though No. 2 is more mature and is the more popular, one cannot dismiss the overwhelming power of number 1.
I know that article by Simpson. One of the most condescending loads of crap I've ever read. Much as I admire Simpson as a COMPOSER.
I don't understand why this is a failure, I mean, it's just great!
Good day.
i hate when someone says those ads are annoying. come on, you downloaded youtube for free, didn’t u?
This is a fantastic performance!
THis is a great performance of a great work....
1. Grave-Allegro non troppo: 00:24
2. Allegro animato: 14:50
3. Larghetto: 23:50
4. Allegro con fuoco: 35:18
very impressed by Mr. Platonov, he makes these beautiful young people work:-)! The result is exciting and yes: a very underrated symphony. I enjoy this performance immensely
The final is too fast IMHO.....Listen to Pletnev....
Great performance. Rachmaninoff - PROUD OF RUSSIAN CULTURE.
This has always been an underappreciated work. It is moving and beautiful. This is a lovely rendition. I suspect it will become the standard that other orchestras try to meet.
The greatest performance of this mighty symphony I have EVER heard.
superb! S.V.R - the ever best composer on Planet
This is probably the finest performance on UA-cam! A great ensemble. I wish I had been in the audience. Thanks for posting.
You haven't listened to Genady Rozhdestvensky : ua-cam.com/video/WwNVlPDyHW8/v-deo.html
Right on, so true! This begs for a high quality transfer to cd & lp. Any smart Russians up the task??
"Isle of the Dead" and the "Symphonic Dances" both remain for me two of the finest musical compositions of all time.
i like "island of the dead"
***** Although "Symphonic Dances" is his last piece, it's still one of my favorites.
Bravo! And what a terrific timpanist!
Invigorating performance!

Enjoying this performance so much. Glad to see a number of the musicians are enjoying it too (i.e. the principal flautist)
Imagine if Tchaikovsky lived to conduct this. He would've saved Rachmaninov from suffering so terribly after Glazunov butchered it.
We are grateful for that. Rach's depression led him to write his piano concerto number 2 which is the most prominent work now according to classicfm hall of fame.
Excellent point but IMHO, the first piano concerto is darker and more interesting...
@@foryourlifeonly "Prominent work" is not a description I would use if you are using Classicfm's judgment, most popular would be more accurate.

Just WOW! Incredible performance!
This recording is a gem
Since I started using headphones, music sounds so much better. Speakers, no matter how refined always produce harmonics and a jagged wave form.
Wow what a treasure I just came with. This is a magnificient performance of a somehow underrated yet absolutely wonderful masterpiece. Superb, very intensely expressive. Bravo.
Still the best, in 2021
What a wonderful symphony full of power & energy, the last movement is outstanding & so uplifting.
Many thanks, wonderful to have this symphony in full in UA-cam!
This is my favorite interpretation of this masterpiece! Thanks so much for making it available.

Splendid !! A performance full of life, thanks for sharing :)

Beautiful...I thoroughly enjoyed this
The Pinnacle ... of symphonic perfection. V. Russian!
beautiful not least the last minutes of the slow movement
Incredible performance. Thank you.
Absolutely the best performance of this piece I have ever heard. Bar none.
Loved the final movement. Very exciting!!
14:15 I can't articulate, but this is one of the most perfect crescendos I have ever heard
Christopher Dandeker Rachmaninov forgived Glazunov not so long after the premiere. Rachmaninov even lended money to Glazunov while he was in America.
Really wanderfull!!! Bravo!!!

This has always been my favourite Rachmaninov symphony, really moving. Never understood why it was so badly received and has languished as a poor relation. A reappraisal is long overdue.
ts cause the conducter was drunk
no no compared to symphony no.2, symphony no.1 is horrible. sounds like the kind of stuff you'd hear in a movie score. Storm or Tornado scene.

Because its very very difficult music
Bravo!!!!
@@rockhill609 That's funny - I was 18 when I was wowed by the Ormandy recording whilst at RMCM in 1969!
...by the way, that should be Richard, not Bridgid! I'm on her tablet!!
That crescendo at 4:57 is awesome!
Very interesting to hear this with the smaller string section. I'm hearing more detail in the winds which adds an extra dimension. At times it needs more strings though. Brilliant tempi and structural design in this interpretation.
so good.
