My dad was on the Forrestal the year it was commissioned. I had the opportunity to go on a family day cruise on her when a family friend was stationed on her years later.
Was on CV-62 93-95. Your aircraft are the same as when I was in Indy, however your ship configuration is 30 years too early for that airwing. No 5” guns, and radar/ecm packages are ancient history. Elevator 1 (port) hardly ever was in the lowered position while underway as well. The helicopters always launched/recovered on the port side angle up between elevator 1, and the meatball. Beautiful model. Wish I had a late Independence version!
I was in V-3 Division on FID from 88-90. We called the portside elevator "#2." We never used it - even in port because (ironically) the ship always moored on the starboard side. IMO it and the lack of a JBD for the portside waist catapult were real flaws in the Forrestal's design that they "fixed" when they designed the Kitty Hawk.
I can verify that. I was on the Forrestal in1970-71 and on the Independence in 1971-72. One reason the port elevator was never lowered underway was if it broke down in the lowered position, all air ops would stop.
Two of my best friends served on the FID...one twice, in '67 off VN and after SLEP in '85 (which I worked on as a structural engineer). The 5"/54 gun mounts were gone long before the WestPac deployment, and especially the fire in '67. The F-14's first appeared in the fleet deployed on the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) in 1975. Otherwise, a beautiful model, great detail.
I did a TAD aboard for sea trials off VACAPES spring of '85, replacing a weather forecaster (AG) who was transferred during the SLEP. My ship at the time, Lexington, was still in drydock and Forrestal needed volunteers to fill out the crew for the 2 week sea trial. Forrestal suffered some damage in a Hatteras Low during the trials that we had to return early to have repaired. What a monster storm!
This ship caught fire in 1992 and that caused two huge explosions, one tearing a 30 foot wide hole in her flight deck.. I am happy that did not happen to your model... Great work!
Did this happen in drydock in Philadelphia or are you confusing this with what happened at Yankee Station on 7/29/67? I'd heard that there was a fire on Kitty Hawk when it was in Philly for SLEP.
I was aboard in 1988-1990 and heard of this but I was in Air Dept so I was not on a need to know basis. There was also a lot of cavitation when the ship would make flank speed for flight ops. You could really feel it the further aft you went.
Very impressive model I really enjoyed this video. Im currently building a 1/350 scale USS enterprise. The detail is amazing on your ship and has given me some ideas
I was an HM3 on the U.S.S. St. Louis LKA (landing craft, ancient) 116. She had a permanent list to port as well, never could trim her out. Lucky for us, the commies never developed a rust-seeking missile.
Obviously before several major upgrades were made. No Phalanx or Sea Sparrows for defense and several of the radars were replaced during the SLEP program of the late 1970's early 1980's. Fun factoid regarding Forrestal and Saratoga. During construction, the ship that BECAME Forrestal wore hull number 60. There was an upgrade in the catapult systems that they wanted to incorporate into the ships. Since CVA-60 wasn't as far along, they put the new steam cats in THAT hull first and painted it as CVA-59. Then they cut into the flight deck of hull #59, replaced the cats and finished THAT one as CVA-60. I served on Saratoga and if you looked VERY carefully under the nonskid at the bow of the flight deck, you could still see the faint outline of the welded "59" in the steel.
+Wendell Olson i was on forestal for 2 weeks....quals off norfolk back in 70s...E-2 checker... Maybe you can rig up helo flying near by as safety helo.....wow! many options to add.....aircraft in high power mode about to take off with flames out the engines hitting JBD
I think most of us heard "Zippo" & "Forrest fire" in boot camp. It was quite a shock when I got my orders! But most sailors didn't use those derogatory names while aboard the FID.
Excellent model, very detailed. Just an observation from a carrier sailor, flight ops appear to be ready to get underway because the jet blast deflectors are raised however the deck edge antennas are still in the vertical position. Sorry but I get nit picky sometimes.
Wow, you even simulated rust on the sides and the hydraulic fluid stains under the A-6B's that's how I remember her. I don't recall the continuous port list though.
My father was on the Forrestal just right after the big fire they just pulled Forrestal from the shipyard and put her back online and duty nice video and great ship where can I get one of these thing her in the USA
Aktuell baut Hans an der U.S.S. Midway.
I was going to say the same thing about the antennas on the bow. Not a Navy guy ( Thank you all for your service btw) but I am an airplane guy and know better. Beautiful model though.
when I was on board the real carrier it never carried f-14's just phantoms f-4 and corsairs. one of the anchors flutes is suppose to be broken on the starboard side. It was busted in early 1970's when they bounced it on the rock bottom of a bay we shared with Russians in the med. needs a ladder to the waterline with platform on the fantail that's where the crew boarded liberty boats when in the med for liberty.
+richard seys I was stationed on Saratoga CV60 1978 threw 1981forrestals sister ship in mayport florida and she did have 14s and 18s got them in 1986 or so Saratoga got them in 1984 after SLEP program could be off on dates year or so I discharged 1981
Do they play Stars and Stripes on those carriers when they call at a port? Schönes Modell, Peter! Welcher Maßstab? 1/100, 1/72? Der Schwimmbad-Sprecher hat es glaube ich in dem Video gesagt, aber ich konnte dessen schweizer Akzent bei den Hintergrundgeräuschen nicht so richtig verstehen. By the time the F-14 Tomcats became operational in the Navy 1975-76' the Forrestal's 8 Gun configuration of 127mm L/54 Mk.42 Guns were long since removed for Sea Sparrow mounts and later with 20mm CIWS. SemperFi
Yeah.. As far as I know, it was caused by a missile fired out of nowhere, and hitting one of the jets on board. That's how it blew up almost the whole hangar of planes.
just curious about what keeps all those planes and everything else from maybe falling off the carrier if the water happens to get a little on the rough side, I mean are they all glued down and maybe something else holding them on the flight deck and wherever??????
The "Ol' Man" needs to get on the "Boats'" ass for letting the sides of his boat so rusty! "Now, muster the 200 man Side Cleaners on the hanger deck, forward!" Nice detail! It even has the WLR-1 and SLQ-17 EW antennas. I'm impressed!
all so very nice and i comment you on a very nice model but there is one thing both builders of both r/c carrierers and static carrierers they fail to include the rails that go around the carrierer aircraft lifts i know it just a detail but it should not take a fortune to include themafter all they are scale models
Awesome.. I have a friend and he was a Royal Navy exchange pilot on the USS Forrestal.... thanks👍🇳🇿
The attention to detail is remarkable. The flight deck actually looks real, as well as the sponsons, aircraft, & surface rust. Nice job.
Das beste Flugzeugträger-Modell das ich bis jetzt gesehen habe. Danke für das Video!
Thank you NickolaTesla for your Great Invention!!! Without it we wouldn't have the fun we do today...
Absolutely beautiful work of art.

Otherwise known by those of us in the Navy as the "USS Forest Fire" or the "USS ZIPPO"
ZIPPO lol
Yep! Remember the safety training films on what NOT to do with AFFF. The Fores Fire WAS the movie!
Those of us stationed aboard her fondly called her the FID. (First in Defense)
Roger FIELD Apparently not everyone called her that. I learned those nicknames I posted from guys that served aboard her.
I think most of us heard "Zippo" & "Forrest fire" in boot camp. It was quite a shock when I got my orders! But most sailors didn't use those derogatory names while aboard the FID.

The whip antennae, (the tall ones around the bow) would be down during flight ops.
And F-14s were not on board when she was CVA-59. Helicopters look correct though.
Roger FIELD how do you people know all this shit?
I lived on the FID for 3.5 years. It's like your home town squeezed down to 1/4 mile
Roger FIELD oh ok.
I was going to say the same thing about the antennas on the bow. Not a Navy guy ( Thank you all for your service btw) but I am an airplane guy and know better. Beautiful model though.
Where did you buy the aircraft and the cars and what did you replace that boat with plastic or wood?
Searc goggle scale 1.444
VF-111 had the best tail art
Very nice! But if those Tomcats are preparing for launch, shouldn't the antennas be in the down position?
What scale is this work of art ? Oops never mind I found it further down the post. That is massive work. Well done 👏
Amazing
SOO COOL.... =-)
Take your pick.. U.S.S. 'Forest Fire' ( lots of smoke ) or U.S.S. 'Zippo' because it always lit the first time.
