Stage and screen actor John Malkovich describes the inherent differences he has discovered between acting for film and theatre. "Theatre is an ephemeral, living organism," says Malkovich. "Film is not." He compares performing a play to surfing a wave.
-----
In this delightful, wide-ranging conversation with Jim Sharman, a respected and enduring artist in his own right, Malkovich speaks about his recent collaborations for the stage with Michael Sturminger, The Infernal Comedy and The Giacomo Variations, along with his rich and varied film and theatre work over the years.
Malkovich has acted in 65 films and was one of the founders of Chicago's critically-acclaimed Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Perhaps best-remembered for his stand-out roles in films such as Dangerous Liaisons and Being John Malkovich, Malkovich is also well known for his endless capacity to "shape shift" -- the seducer, the intellectual, philosopher, the coward -- often within a single character.
On the art of seduction, he tells Sharman: "Seduction is like theatre, you have to be where you are. You have to be in the present...and allow the person looking into you to read the quality in you that they need in order to be seduced by you."
The discussion ranges through the role of fathers and sons in American literature, Malkovich's love of William Faulkner, his disdain of celebrity, making unlikeable characters worth watching, and the critical differences between acting for the stage or screen.
The event was a part of the Sydney Festival 2011. - Australian Broadcasting Corporation
John Malkovich is an American actor, producer, director and recently fashion designer. Over the last 25 years of his career, Malkovich has appeared in more than 70 motion pictures. He received Academy Award nominations for his roles in "Places in the Heart" and "In the Line of Fire". He has also appeared in critically acclaimed films such as "Empire of the Sun", "The Killing Fields", "Dangerous Liaisons", "Being John Malkovich", and "Changeling".
Only a true lover of theatre can understand what Mr. Malkovich said here. I adore film industry, that magnificent form of art, but I bow down to the theatre actors that endure the weight of wonderful "living act". Right now, right here, with no "erase button". No time for break, no room for mistake. Thank you very much John Malkovich, for feeling the art the way you do, for that sophisticated spirit of yours, for such a noble mind. One of my biggest wishes is to enjoy your great quality in theatre.
"In the movie you only need few good seconds". Thats so accurate
maybe its just because he is so eloquent and has an interesting, varied word choice
Just to clarify, some of these comments were replies that became separate messages due to a bug
@Hurley1340 he didn't mean for it to seem that way, his mind works in a unique, complex kind of way...he gives us this intelligence to relate with, not to try to impress us.
John made it seem like everything he was saying was incredibly insightful when it was really only kind of insightful.
everyone in this comment section is clearly a self proclaimed expert on acting and performances lol calling him a pompous asshole yet no one in this comment section has every been a famous actor/perform and has no oscars, has never been in over 70 motion pictures and is worth 45 million... just an interesting note.. but everyone here is right.. he has no right to speak about film or acting -_- fucking youtube
Agree. I always say the theater actor and the film actor are different. Like a plumber or an electrician. They are both tradesmen but their jobs are different. I disagree that you don't have to be a good actor to work on film. The techniques for film actors are numerous. If an actor doesn't understand the intricate detailed techniques, then it will be a disaster performance wise on camera.
We are going to miss this guy as he gets old
lol at the random General Hospital ad that preceded this video of this amazing actor.
I have hair and he made more than I did, look at his work!
Most movies thrive off of the famous actors in it. Several movies suck but fans follow there favorite actors.
who does he mean when he says "greatest scenes in film are made by non actors," what scenes from what films?
Not specific but if you know, you know
There are these scenes for sure, maybe is not the whole movie(sometimes it is sometimes not) but I think what he’s trying ti say is that, talking about top actors, in one hand you have an actor who do some theater or nothing and the whole time is in movies but he cant reach that level in theatre, but he came to his secuence and he had the most brilliant time and he es doing nothing. And in the other hand you have this john malkovich tipe of guy who is brillian at both and he really breaks up the ceiling when he come to scene in where he has to stay in character in the wholo movie(cause there are movies the character only apeara under pressure)
For example, none of the cast in ‘Not one less’ were professional actors.
@@paololuckyluke2854 And it shows!! Kidding aside, NOt One Less, is a whopper of a film, a true and vital contribution to world cinema, i own a DVD of it. Four yrs ago i screened it for my colleagues and friends who had no idea what they were in for. They were moved; they smiled, they wept, and wept and wept.
@nrose14 its truly magnificent
Interesting talk.
Could have found a better guy to do the interview - at least pretend that you are interested
Brilliance!
@zarthered I'd like to know too.
@Hurley1340 That's what movies do
er eeeeeeeeeer er er eeeeeeeeeeeeeer
Pompous inanity, which, when you think about it, is the most important trait in a great actor.
@tabber 87
"pompous inanity"
Nail on head.
Actors talking about acting. Is there anything more nauseating.
Why are you here then? 😂
This was lame...
