I could've sworn...this was the biggest crowd reaction I had ever seen in my marching band career. The crowd was so loud that the trumpets were playing to the mike and I still couldn't hear them play. And I played tuba in that video. That was seriously the highlight of my MRD career. I don't think Macy's can top this one.
I happened to be passing through Harrisonburg that day, and after some pizza and beer at Luigi's, we were like "oh, let's run through campus." And we were in the stands for that. Hoo boy. Totally worth every bit of hearing loss I still have.
I was the 50,001th viewer. Can't stop watching this...I remember this night like a few minutes ago. During the ending when we came off the sideline, the crowd was so loud I did not know when to come in. Our energy that night was unforgettable....
Best marching band song to play. EVER. 2006 was an AWESOME year for the MRDs and I'd give just about anything to play this song again like we're doing to Malaguena.
OMG one of the best trumpet featuring marching band pieces out there and you guys were friggen AWESOME! Those are some pretty sweet high G's you bust out there, im thuroughly impressed and im gonna suggest to my band director if i can get my range up in time for my senor season! From a future trumpet soloist at Battlefield High.
I'm in high school, and I was at POC yesterday, and I will say this: the Marching Royal Dukes' performance made my freaking year! You guys are AMAZING!
I'm so proud to be a Marching Royal Duke!!!! :) I can't believe we're going to play this again for our closer for show 2!!!! I'm so excited!!!!! :) We're not just Virginia's Finest...We're AMERICA'S FINEST!!!!!!!!!!!
Amen to that! I just recently in the trumpet professor's surprise concert and McGee popped a dub C at the end of the last song with all the alumni and current students...sweet
I've got some awesome memories from being an MRD this year, but for those of us that was in this show, I have to say this was the most unforgettable moment of my MRD career. Macy's Parade 2008 can't even top this one.
Oh man.....I miss being in the MRDs so much. This was definitely my favorite song out of all the ones we performed. and the crowd's reaction that night........sick :)
i saw them at Hanover competition 2 weeks ago and they are incredible just not by the sheer number of a college band but just the pure sound this is what i join band for to be in a to produce sound exactly like this
i agree with your thoughts on the excitement levels of each song but there was no "failed attempt" at fusing Firedance and Mala. A Mis is a song of it's own and we do a latin song every year for our concert tune. A Mis was this years. rumor is that FD might be coming back in the 09 season though ;) cross ur fingers...
Not to say anything negative whatsoever about prior and future generations of the MRD's, but this was hands down the best performance by the MRD's of all time. and yes, I may be partial because I was in it.
+Avery Daugherty If you ask me the number one memory of my MRD career....Macy's Parade would be number 2. This night was the number one greatest memory as an MRD. The video does no justice to show the crowd volume...I remember we couldn't hear the trumpet soloists.
I'm sorry. I marched for NSU, but I'll be the first to say that there isn't an HBCU that could matched sound or clarity with this program. There is no comparison. I will build a program like this one.......someday
@RABBITBACKER I don't think they would kill them. I say they're about even given the fact that JMU has it's pros and cons, and so does Northwestern state. I think it's kinda hard to compare them, when in the end, marching band in college is about fun. =)
While I agree that their performance of A Mis Abuelos was as good as this, if you hear the original recording of Arturo Sandoval playing it, A Mis Abuelos is fucking LEGIT.
I hated I came in a year after this show. Malguena was a very close second but I just don't think A Mis Abuelos did it this year. It sounded like a failed attempt to fuse FD and Mala. together. I wasn't there but if this show was better than marching Macy's then it must have been one heck of a show.

yes, it was so beautiful it took my breath away. Simply amazing.
Best marching band song to play. EVER. 2006 was an AWESOME year for the MRDs and I'd give just about anything to play this song again like we're doing to Malaguena.

We're not just Virginia's Finest...We're AMERICA'S FINEST!!!!!!!!!!!
u guys hav great chops.....especially the guy that hit the clean double c
JMU is, as usual, ridiculous legit. I love them.
our band has to play this this year. It is AWESOME!
Great as always JMU
I love this so much. The chords were hit on the mark each time by the upperbrass members. Well played JMU.
Good Lord!!! AMAZING sound!!! Powerful, yet CLEAN!! That's what's up!!
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amen to that! I just recently in the trumpet professor's surprise concert and McGee popped a dub C at the end of the last song with all the alumni and current students...sweet
Now that is what you call BLOWING!!!!!!
Loved playing Fire Dance in 1980.Sky Ryder's than playing that fall at ECU. Amazing song.
they sound great
this reminds me how much im gunna miss playing in a marching band....holy crap that was amazing
No one will ever match Chris McGee "The Trumpet Messiah' of JMU in the earl 80's. :) ... the dude was a complete trumpet monster.
woot =D i love that song

That's a huge band! Not bad for the size of the band. I couldn't imagine trying to get a band that size to balance!
i saw them at Hanover competition 2 weeks ago and they are incredible just not by the sheer number of a college band but just the pure sound this is what i join band for to be in a to produce sound exactly like this
great!
that is awsome!!!
OMG! That was outrageous!
i agree with your thoughts on the excitement levels of each song but there was no "failed attempt" at fusing Firedance and Mala. i think we're doing Firedance for the 2010 season along with a bunch of the other famous concert tunes from years past
yeah man. i heard this in 2007 and the "tried" to fit them on a high school field. loud as HELL!!!!!!!!
Tears - man - wow.
DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUKKKKKKKKKESSSSSSSSSS! Fantastic! love the MRDs. Go see them if you ever get the chance!
~T're
Bender's my hero
This is one of our "concert tunes" in which the Dukettes (Dance Team) perform with us. We don't move a lot in order to keep the focus on them.
They sound great...The Sound Machine will be there to rep this weekend!!!It's great for both schools....EAGLE PRIDE!!!
ohh I miss playing this piece :(
although we didnt get to finish drill for this in time for POC, it was pretty awesome to perform it today.
YEEEEESSSSSSSSSS...ballsy
that trumpet who first started playing the solo is my band director!
Not to say anything negative whatsoever about prior and future generations of the MRD's, but this was hands down the best performance by the MRD's of all time. and yes, I may be partial because I was in it.

CHILLS
good stuff
Oh yeah....and that crowd was SO MUCH louder than what you hear on the video. The noise was literally deafening.
anytime someone asks me "what's the best marching band you ever saw?" I send them this link.
Got....
Damn....
That gave me that grit face you get when you know something sounds good... you know the one that urgh face.
WHOOOOOOOOOOOAAAA!!!!
Ah, the MRD... year in, year out the finest anywhere. (class of '84)
MRDs are doing this again for the 2010 Show 2 Closer.
Even with the 300+ people we have in the band you can still hear the pit. We must have been playing outrageously loud!!!
wooot!!!
@orangeraider07
And it sounds amazing! It's going to look hot this weekend at POC :D
yea, dude that guy is ridiculous. He's a scream machine.
oh thanks! =p
You should hear the line this year ;)
Park and bark.......
Although I do applaud with the trumpet soli
Where can you get music for this?
i play 4 a hbcu but this band go so hard
Dancing.

DUUUUUUUUUUUUKES!
get it bender. was that a double B i heard?
@KrisKrunKNC You sure? 2011 has been a CRAZY year in terms of trumpets
@bradlovesreskins yep, he's a beast, I still wonder why he didn't go play in a Drum Corp.
where can I find the sheet music or can someone help please?
Nvm...
Dukettes are in the show piece....thus band can't move much...
But still....holding in one spot for 30 seconds?
:S
does anyone know who the drum major in the center is? it looks like someone i know, but i'm not sure.
While I agree that their performance of A Mis Abuelos was as good as this, if you hear the original recording of Arturo Sandoval playing it, A Mis Abuelos is fucking LEGIT.
yeah my bad i thought i heard a different cord structure
I'm in high school, and U
*Throws baby*
i saw them yesterday too they where so cool but some idiot in the stand where booing them even though they where pure genius
Yeah guys, sounded balls. Too bad I couldn't do section leader again this year, Bender way to get that feature tight as shit.
Actually it's a Mega C...a Double B wouldn't fit in the cord right
I hated I came in a year after this show. Malguena was a very close second but I just don't think A Mis Abuelos did it this year. It sounded like a failed attempt to fuse FD and Mala. together. 29,999 views....=)
@cdonon321 KEVIN!!!
It's a double B natural...
WOW O.O.
I hear boo's at the end :\
sounds fine to me... but I'm biased. lol. being in the band 'n all lol.
i watch this and i think to myself... i hope they move at least once rofl

i hate this arragement, lost everything from the original
but it was still a good performance. why did it sound like the audience were booing?
O_O

Too bad they don't play nearly as loud as they used to..
they dont move much...
