I've come across Mark Jeweler's variants back in the day growing up on Navy bases. I'd have to dig through my books to find them, but I definitely have one that I picked recently from the 50 cent bins. It was a 1981 Incredible Hulk 268. Didn't realize it was Mark Jeweler's until I flipped through it, lol.
Exactly! Totally agree, AFTA. I respect REAL variants like cover price variants, Mark Jeweler inserts, and foreign editions. Also like "defects" like date stamps (or arrival dates written), subscription creases, store stamps, and sometimes even names written on or in books from back when they were bought to be read. These speak to the history of the copy and sometimes make that copy cooler than a higher grade one. Just the opinions of a long time collector.

Not only is a Mark Jeweler insert an interesting piece of comic book history, but since they're made of card-stock they add support to the book and prevent some of the damage suffered from bending the book. In other words, a comic with the insert has probably survived in a bit better condition than normal comics without the inserts.
never really thought of it that way but it makes sense. I know it makes the books "heavier" so it's easier to recognize when picking one up compared to another. Thanks for the comment Michael.
Wow, thank you for the explanation. I live in Germany, have over 11.000 comics, and actually I found a few Mark Jewelers in my pc, all by coincidence, btw. I will definitely go throw my collection... 😅 I also have a few Whitman Logo Variants ... what about that? Keep up the good work, always a pleasure watching you!
Whitman variants is definitely on my list but I don't think I have one in my PC right now. Gotta dig through the long boxes. Hope you find some of these in your huge collection
If you live in Germany, there's a good chance you will find these jeweler variants since they were mostly sold over there in military stores. I would love it if you could contact me, because I would pay you to find the ones I still have not found. You can find my contact info by doing a google search on "DC Mark Jeweler variants Kirk" and you will see article I wrote with contact info at the bottom of the article.
Dude, I couldn't find anything on those diamond inserts online. I even asked my good buddy who knows way more than me and he didn't know anything about them.
I have a bin full of old comic books someone gave me, and I have a stack of over a 100 mark jeweler variants all from the 90,s With a couple key issues.
wow, had no idea about this.. Might have to pour through my collection.. doubt I am lucky enough to accidentally have picked up some of these variants.
I got a lot of those in my Red Sonja's from Marvel. Makes sense, since I bought them in Germany and so they are most likely from one of the former US army bases.
@@ComicJabroni that's the main thing. It's not 100% accurate, but I've only ever found 1 with the stamp & no insert along with it. I live about 45 mins away from Fort Wood in Missouri, so the pop up here from time to time on old collections.
I'm a MJ nut. Have some minor keys mjs. Found a Avengers 257 (1st Nebula) for sale online at a good price for a 9.6. I zoomed in and saw it said Mark Jeweler. Nothin in the description said anything about MJ. I said SOLD!!
Thank you I always guessed mark jewelers make book little less valuable from newsstand , direct edition versions books I saw mark jewelers editions where not in good condition I bought newsstand versions
This is a great and informative video! I did not know any of this.
You need to keep it up with this series of “What the heck is...”
and that's why I make these vids because not everyone knows about these variants. Glad you got something out of it
I lucked out and bought a run of around 30 Thor comics. 10 of them mark jewelr inserts. Talk about luck!
Where can a list of all Mark jewerlers be found?
Mycomicshop
@@johnbecnel693 MCS lists some books as having inserts, but they’re non-existent. It’s not a 100% reliable resource.
Those adds remind me of the night I got to drunk and lost my class ring it was a beauty too
