  • Hello, friends!
In my previous video, I shared with you the process of creating a Hoverbike that was supposed to lift off the ground by a few meters and hover in the air. Unfortunately, we didn't achieve that goal at the time.
Many of you wrote to me suggesting that I should modify it by adding electric drone motors for stabilization, and others mentioned that the propellers should be repositioned higher than the center of mass. Well, I decided to take your advice and have now revamped the Hoverbike, with the propellers now positioned significantly above the center of mass.
What do you think of this version?
Please share your thoughts in the comments, and don't forget to share this video.
For those who are seeing this video for the first time: this project is about transforming an ordinary motorcycle into a Hoverbike, aiming to merge the thrill of motorcycling with the cutting-edge realm of aviation. Join me on this journey of innovation, where we explore the challenges and triumphs of making a bike fly. Let's dive into the details of the modifications and see this Hoverbike take to the skies!

Install a ring around each propeller so it would control the airflow up and down. Right now the air is going out to the sides. You can see it in the video how the propellers are blowing everything to the sides. With a tube around each propeller you would control the airflow coming from above the bike straight down so it would give you lift at much lower rpm.

but stiil been so heavy, the propellers may not be the right ones and it needs a lot simplicity with a plus carbon fiber elements. I sugest calculate this machine for better results.

@@GordonScottYankeeEngineer Carbon fiber would be ideal but keeping with his metal working background make it out of 1.2 mm aluminum with ribs from same aluminum to give it some strength. By using a motorcycle the hole thing is shot but it is something to keep viewers engaged. Need a much smaller gas tank, much smaller seat and remove everything of off that machine that he can. But like I said I don't think this is truly meant to fly high.

your YZF R1 has plenty of engine power. What you need to make your drone take off is either bigger propeller blades or a higher ratio in the gearbox. The engine will take longer to get the propellers up to speed, but in return you will get much more lifting power and at the same time you will get much more control over the drone.
    It’s all about love… 😍
Keep up the good work… 👍

I don't understand why no motorcycle 🏍 or moped 🛵 company has built a trike moped similar to yours (in your previous videos) with a recumbent seating position & lightweight aerodynamic removable weather enclosure. So the 🛵 could be used all year in rain, cold and light snow. Just like a car but get 75+ mpgs using a 300 to 500cc scooter engine & cvt drive train. So it could go 80 to 85mph capable of traveling on USA 55mph hwy & 75- 85mph interstate systems. The aerodynamic enclosure and recumbent seating would make it about 35+% more efficient. Than the upright riding position of a motorcycle where your body is creating major wind drag.

Lessen weight of unnecessary items of bike, larger engine, larger blades. Far far too complicated to try to do adjustable blades for collective. It would be possible to add extra vanes to act as a cyclic control, but leaning in a craft that small will accomplish that. As far as ground effect, when you lift off, you lose ground affect as you ascend. A helicopter does not have the propeller near the ground. They depend on much larger airfoils/vanes and engine HP / speed.
You have to increase lift from propellers and lose weight. You were 360kilos on bike engine/frame before installation. Now maybe double that 700+ kilo. 1,500-1,600 pounds will take much large air movement to lift the craft that with everything added was pushing 900 kilo. 2000 pounds (USA) =909 kilograms.

Great idea! The hoverbike clearly needs to be lightened a little, it feels like it's missing quite a bit. And most importantly, I suggest changing the gear ratio - changing the stars and thus raising the rpm on the screws even more.

I agree, you are a very skilled fabricator and engineer. It won't fly because its too heavy. To produce enough force, you would have to have propellers at least 2.5 times the mass of the rig. Even then, you'd only get a few feet off the ground. If you had materials just as strong but at a quarter of the weight could work too. Whether it flies or not, we will all be cheering you on!

Thank you for this prototype that you builded (i had exactly same idea, but no funds). I think it would fly yet, just after small corrections, i would make wider X under the bike, bigger propellers - if 4 couldn't lift, make 6. If you watch carefully center of gravity moved forward (back of the machine want to lift more that front).

Something to consider, although it may have minimal effect here, is the force pushing the assembly down from the airflow moving against the upper grill, your body, the motorcycle, and the drive covers below the bike. If you could reduce this in some manner, it may help. I'm sure having the upper grill between you and the blades is great protection, though. Most drones have the blades in free air with minimal frame material in the air flow. You've probably thought of this already. Really appreciate your effort and craftsmanship.

A helicopter pilot friend of mine was trying to build a similar vehicle 15 years ago. This design was a mixture of a jet plane and a motorcycle. We made a "mockup" together and he went to a fair in Dubai with the mock-up to find sponsors. But he couldn't find anyone to give 1 million dollars. :D His hoverbike design was just like yours, but his had a small helicopter engine under his seat. Instead of propellers, there were 4 fan outlets, just like on Harrier planes... But when he could not find a sponsor, he wanted to use this "mock-up" in a different way. He built a huge robotic arm powered by hydraulic pistons and mounted that "mockup" on the end of the robotic arm. He also sold this new toy to an amusement park :D
(I will leave the Google drive link of the photos of the design under this comment , I hope the link appears.)

You are really close and I agree you need to drop some mass to fly. If you have access to four load cells then use them in a full power runs to see what the apparent load is at full throttle. That should give you your mass reduction goal, I'd say about 10kg should do it. Try a run with minimum fuel and a muffler deletion.

I hesitate to make any comments sitting in a chair and having never built anything as beautiful, brilliant and complex as you have. I have read that power required goes like the cube of the prop tangential velocity, so two big and slower turning contra-rotating propellers might get you more lift for less power. Best of luck.

You're right about the weight, and reducing it down to two rotors is the right idea, but co-axial rotors is very complicated and you'll lose more power to mechanical inefficiencies. What you need is a something like a Chinook helicopter, fore and aft rotors, counter-rotating to counter out torque, and staggered, (aft slightly higher than fore) so the blades can actually over-lap each other. That, and drastically reducing the weight !

Great video, always enjoy your content.
Definitely need a stronger motor, OR to replace some of that steel with aluminium.
Double (2 layer) rotors might work since they can grab more air as they spin.
Another option would be to extend the platform to the front and back, then change where the rotors are positioned (1 pair further to the front, and 1 pair further to the back.) Then put a third set of rotors in line with the middle of the bike.

Huge fan since you started. I’m a retired mechanical engineer in Kentucky USA. I wondered from the beginning of this build why you didn’t apply twist dynamics on your propellers. They, and I’m a novice in aeronautical engineering, but it’s my understanding that they create more force because the hub spins faster than the outer of each propeller. Ie. more twist, more force., also more stability. Good luck my friend

Yes - no ground effect - but also you cannot take off indoors (that is a bit of a lol moment) the air must leave the bike and have little air resistance past the bike and in flight blow down towards ground and keep going straight - NOT recirculate around a room and come back around the ceiling and press back down on the bike. Last time I sent you a drawing of cowls - the cowls reduce the blade tip losses and increase efficiency of blade dramatically - they need to be about 10mm from static tips for safety. Now that you are a helicopter you need to extend the cowls down to your chain drive level (no more) so your air gets a clean path past the bike and has best speed on exit of cowls . You can also put air flow straighteners in the flow for efficiency and use them as structural members if necessary- I think your steering vanes should be moved also to the exhaust of the cowls - bear in mind the vane distance from the vanes to your centre of gravity is a major input to its efficiency - although you could also try to regulate flow rate but that may be cumbersome. I would still propose the cowls create a modicum of air going backwards as hanging is likely to be more unstable than a little permanent forward motion. Be careful if your flaps have no effect at 10 degrees because then there will be huge instabilités if you go past say 45 degrees (flow changes from laminar to turbulent) si vous préférez le Français - allez-y

Idea's : Carbon fiber engine cradle/cockpit. (You need to be sitting in front of, and level with the engine.) To make carbon fiber panels, just create a square/rectangular form then layer sheets of the C.F. until desired thickness is achieved. Cure the panels then cut out the desired shapes. In other words, I'de abandon the "motorcycle" aspect altogether. (This could also be done with aluminium, etc.) This would not only lower the weight by getting rid of the existing frame but also the weight of the lower chain drive for the rotors as welll. The rotors definitely need to be above the vehicle.
For more lift you could change the gear ratio at the front and rear sprockets in order to create higher rotor speeds at lower rpm, and space the rotors further apart so that you can lengthen them. OR, you could convert the engine into a generator, and run electric motors. If you go electric that eliminates ALL of the rotor drive. It would also allow you to put a cowling around each rotor producing even more lift. You could also run 6 or 8 rotors for even more stability. Forward, reverse and lateral movement coud be achieved by moving the rotors themselves. Two control sticks- one controls F/R the other R/L. I'de be tempted to try using servos, or hydraulic assist for rotor positions. Gonna go fabricate a sandwich now. Have fun, and get it on video. :)

By raising the props above the rider you have allowed yourself the ability to make bigger props if you raise two of the props in opposite corners. Bigger props would allow them to produce more lift at a lower RPM and the length of the props would be limited by the interference in opposing corners rather than current configuration. Not sure if that will help but just throwing out ideas.

    More thoughts:
The chain drives are too complicated. Maybe use the bike engine to drive a generator, and use the electricity to drive motors. That way you could use the controls out of a quadcopter drone to control your bike.
By returning the rotors to the bottom, but angling them by raising the farthest point on each from the center, it would angle the line of thrust to over the center of gravity. By angling all four rotors this way, the lines of thrust would intersect at a point over your head, and directly over the center of gravity, provided you have mounted the bike correctly and taken into account the position of the passenger. This would allow you to still use ground effect without sacrificing stability. Picture the lines of thrust running through the axis of each rotor. Now tilt the rotors until those lines form the edges the edges of a pyramid. Now picture someone sitting inside that pyramid with the top of the pyramid just over their head. The top vertex of that pyramid would be the new center of thrust, which would be above the center of gravity.
Propellers may not be the answer. Have you considered ducted fans? The key is generating more lift than the device weighs. Ducted fans are much more efficient.
If you use the idea of a quadcopter drone control setup, an engine driven generator, and four motor driven ducted fans, you don’t need the motorcycle body, which is very heavy. Mount the motor/generator directly to the platform and fabricate a lightweight seat. I was thinking a lawnchair with a HOTAS joystick and throttle setup. The Warthog gamers HOTAS comes to mind. It has two throttle levers ( which can be used for speed and altitude) and a joystick for direction. At in some rudder pedals for rotation and you have full control. Of course integrating these controls could get interesting. The HOTAS and rudder pedals think they are talking to a PC, the quadcopter controls think they are getting inputs from an RC controller, and that they are talking to a toy drone, not industrial size motors. It would be interesting to see if you could get it working.

I thinkthe biggest issue is the propeller shape/cross-section, like another commenter said.
See if you can find 4 proper aircraft propellers - like from a paraglider. The efficiency of your homemade blades is just too low. Also remember that the tip speed should be close to but below the speed of sound (360m/s) or the efficiency will drop sharply.

Hell yah man, ive been dreaming of doing this for years, let me live vicariously through you! 😂
I have to let you know, it doesnt actually change anything to change where the props are. I think they called it the rocket pendulum effect, or something along those lines... Its like moving the battery location on a rc quadcopter, makes no (or nearly no) functional difference.
Its gonna need you to increase the speed of the rotors, or the number of props... Id suggest simply adding a second rotor set below on the same axle, that way you nearly double the thrust (and of course the amount of torque needed, but i dont think youre anywhere near maxing out that engine.) For a quadcopter to fly comfortably you need minimum 2-3 times the weight in thrust, more is better, but you also need very high levels of torque for spinup/spindown to control angle which there are a few ways to achieve . Youll get it man, i believe in you
    😊

I agree, too much weight. Could cut a lot of circles out of the frame to lighten it up. Get rid of any excess weight on the bike. Efficiency may be a little low with all the complex linkages to the props. At any rate please take extra precautions. Don't push the envelope too far and stay safe.

Well, I igree. Too much weight for less power and wings as such its needs.
I believe mechanical loses in the chains and in the central reduction from the K bike get the result worst too.
Whatever, a think it become easier make this machine to fly if it looks like a airplane, not a drone.
Let the engine provide the power to a mobile blade, while the bike had solid wings.
Incredible idea, amazing skils for this craft work, good luck!

Just had a thought, if you used a harley with extended forks, you would have a real chopper😂😂😂
For real though, to me(and im no engineer) it seems that you need to have your propeller force directed more down that out/down. So maybe a shrouded prop enclosure? Also, at the rpms you are having to reach just for lift off, thi build seems unsustainable with the eventual motor destruction. To me(again, not an engineer here) you need a motor that has the ability to reach the high rpms needed with MORE torque. A motor that had more torque would allow you to shift to a higher gear ratio thus allowing faster propeller rotation.
This is good work and i would love nothing more than for this build to succeed. I can hardly wait till y'all dial this in and get it working. Keep up thw great work.

Good effort, but you said it yourself, it's tway too heavy for the thrust developed to overcome its overall mass. Suggest you take out the engine and redesign a much lighter frame, you need half the weight of the one, you have now. That should lift off the ground, but controlling it in the air, is another matter. Well done!

i think you are on the right track with the dual rotor design in the middle. This is a long shot, but why not make the engine drive a very powerful three phase alternator, and use a big brushless motor as your drive for the rotor. I think this can be very expensive and i dont want to see you go bankrupt my friend... But you would have the engine at a constant rpm and could still modify the speed of the rotor with a ESC.

Meanwhile in the Garage ? from the looks of it, your RPM on the motorcycle are maxed out. try these steps below.
    1. find out how many RPMs do you need to create lift.
    2. find out how many RPMs do you need to lift the whole weight of your craft.
    3. find out if your motor is to heavy and if you need a lighter one.
    4. find out the maximum RPMs your blades can handle.

  • @3dartstudio007

I would check RPM of current setup then try propellers with different pitch, blade number, curviture on a thrust scale. Electric motor to measure pounds of lift for each change. Ultralight planes are very sensitive to every tiny detail of those blades.

Bigger diameter and lower RPM props (with smaller attack angle) - are more efficient in terms of power/thrust ratio. Big two-blade rotors are more efficient than 4-blade rotors. But they have bigger diameter. 3-blade rotors more efficient than 4-blade rotors ets.
