The song, I mean. I'm not DEMANDING that you pre-buy/donate to the new album. That would be very UnCanadian of me. However, I am willing to wink and nudge a bit. www.indiegogo....
'Demand' originally comes from ist's Toothpick Bridge, produced by Jay Burnett. It's a record I'm still hugely proud of, both in terms of the songs and the sheer A-game of the band (also, I was there).
As recorded, it was a voice and piano (courtesy of honorary istian Paul Swannell) ballad. Although, I seem to recall a fine version featuring John McCourt on mandolin, which always looked like it belonged in a Jonathan Swift novel as, at the time, he favoured Rickenbacker basses.
It was written after a long, drunken night propping up a bar, nursing a broken heart and a cheap bottle of whisky. It was one of those times when a song floats over the speakers that, until that precise moment, you had failed to realise was written precisely for your situation. In this particular instance, it was, embarrassingly, a gloopy pop hit. "Strange how potent cheap music is," as Mr Coward once said.
Some people close to me reckon this is my best work, which considering I've since written another 100 songs is moderately worrying.
